I think we should keep the bowls and have an 8 team seeding

competition to decide which teams will go to the top bowls and the championship bowl.
In other words, at the end of the regular season, take the conference champions of the major conferences and a few wildcards and play 2 weeks of elimination games. The two undefeated teams from those elimination games go to the championship bowl.
The two teams who won 1 but lost 1 elimination game go to the 2nd bowl in the rotation
The four teams that lost in the first round go to the 3rd and 4th bowl in the rotation
The rest of the bowls get selected as per usual.
This type of solution would have been the least disruptive to the BCS, but now that it has ended, it would be the least disruptive to the remaining bowl system.
Having a "final four" is kinda dumb, in my opinion, but it's just my opinion I guess.

I think 16 is too much. I think an 8 team playoff is perfect. I think the 5 power conf. champs should get auto invites, that would leave three wild cards for the committee to choose from.
I also think the 1st round should be home games for the top 4 seeds. This should happen a week or two from the Conf. champ games. The semi-finals should then be just like they are going to be next year. The first round losers get thrown into the normal "Bowl Pool" so they can still go to a regular bowl as if they hadn't played in the 1st round.

64 teams in four conferences. Each conference has four quads of four teams. Quad winners (best conference record) play a first round. The first round winners play each other. This continues one more round and each conference has one representative seeded in the final four.
It's just too easy on the players, scheduling and eliminates BS polls and potential problems faced by selection committees. It's all decided on the field.
So what if it hurts the NCAA? It's not like anyone really cares.

The CCG is the final interconference playoff game. The four standing after that only have two games left to face. Only two will play the second game.
That leaves each of the two that participate in the NC game with only two post season games.
I know there are some problems with that but D2 seems to survive.

Then by default you have rd 1 of a playoff system. You don't win your conference. .. boo hoooo , deal with it. You are not in a conference? Boo hoooo notre dame. .. deal with it. Your conference or division is tougher than any other conference/division... boo hoooo , deal with it.
People say money is the true playoff killer, Butt it is also all the crybabies. Especially from the sec who think 6 teams every year should be in the playoffs and those upady ND fans who think they are too good to join a conference in football.

SC losing to Tenn kept them out of their conference champ

so tell me how it would be meaningless in an 8 team playoff?
Also, this argument that playoffs make games meaningless would only hold water if there was like a 64 team (half of D1A) playoff, which would be stupid.
I would say that having only undefeated teams with a shot at the NC makes 99% of the games meaningless, because after you've lost a game, the rest become meaningless.

We should have just stuck with bowls, but if you want a

playoff, you have to make it a playoff. Every team in 1A must start the season with a path to the championship. That means that every conference champion gets in. And that means that you need AT LEAST a 12 team playoff (with four byes) or a 16 team playoff (which would allow for more at-large bids).
10 1A conferences and some independents. Each conference champion and six at-large bids.
Go down to 11 regular season games. By doing that, you actually REDUCE the wear and tear on almost ALL college football players.
Then you have a championship game for your conference. That's 12.
Then the round of 16. That round, and the bowls that other teams get into, gets you to 13 games.
Then the round of 8. That's 14 for 8 teams. That's how many games every team already plays with a conference championship and a bowl.
Then the round of 4 and then the championship. That means that 2 teams would have to play one extra game and two teams would have to play two extra games.
That's the only fair way to do it.
UNLESS - 1A restructures without the Sun Belt, WAC, C-USA...basically get down to a level where you can have an eight team playoff and still have every champion in.

Trim 1 regular season game and award divisional championships. Have a 16 team play off. 1st round Saturday after Thanksgiving and 2nd round in place of conference championships or skip Thanksgiving and have games the next 2 weeks (schools do have to work out exams, but teams in Conf. championships do that now). Top seeds host 1st 2 rounds then have BCS bowl/playoff format for semis and championship game. No more games played than FSU and Auburn played this year.
Have revenue sharing in conferences to make up for lost game. Imagine the ESPN contract for the 1st 12 games.

Get rid of 12th game, all teams play 11, as old. No conference championships games either. 16 game playoff begins two weeks after reg season ends, plays on thru Dec and into Jan.

logistical challenge it is going to be to simply play the one extra game, participants unknown, with just the week's turnaround as it stands. At 4 teams it's an improvement because it better solves the "who's #2" quandry. It'll be interesting regardless.
