Were 'The Beatles' the best ever ?

'The Beatles' are the best selling artist of all-time with over 520 million equivalent album sales.
They were mostly in an era of buying physical media, not streaming.

I think their song writing was very good.
I think their studio recordings were very good.
They actually were not much of a touring band.
They were not around as a group that long.

They released just 13 studio albums. These include: Please Please Me, With The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The Beatles (White Album), Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.

Difficult to rank them below #1.

They were talented for sure, but that generation was looking for something different and they ate it up. Groups like CCR were probably just as good IMO.

The Beatles were brilliant in the creation of music. They were ahead of their time. Sales do not lie. Ccc was great too and the rolling stones. Part of first British music invasion.

Beatles were very good musicians, but pale on instruments as to the Stones.
Mick is the best front man of all time.
Their songs are not as good, but their performances are off the chart.
Plus they been around a long time, entertained many generations.

I too am a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac. Did you know this is also an old English band, and at one time the members did not include Fleetwood or McVay.

The beer and your post make think back to the first time I saw them ->

The concert was at the NCST football field, and it was great fun!
That week end in Raleigh was also the NC Police Olympics. I was entered there in the 5K and beat all the cops in the state even though I was over 40. (this is relevant but also me bragging).

I was in great shape. I was down near the stage, watched Mick go "all out" up and down scaffolds while dancing and singing. He was in better shape than me, and I was in awe.
No way I could have done that.

Peter Green was very eccentric and thought by incorporating Mick Fleetwood and John McVie's names into the band's name, it would divert attention from Green, who was a great blues guitarist.

assignment. They were far and away the most impactful, influential, and important rock and roll band of all-time. They almost single handedly sent popular music in a bold new direction.

I was very young, but had an older brother who kept me very aware of it all, and I remember The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show, and how in the following weeks, teen kids in our neighborhood and everywhere were starting Beatle-like bands in their garages and basements. There's never been anything close since. Add to that the budding war in Vietnam, civil rights awareness and violence, the exploding drug culture, and space travel, it was quite a time and The Beatles played the soundtrack. They were cultural icons, and their impact went far beyond pop music in a way that no other band or musical act has come close to since.

More quality songs in a decade than other bands in 40+ years. Paul and John were musical prodigies and geniuses. George elevated to their level by Abbey Road. Ringo could keep a beat with any creation. And George Martin was the unsung hero producing, arranging, sometimes writing orchestral parts, and calling many of the shots especially through 1966.

Helter Skelter may have been the 1st hard rock tune. Revolver and Abbey Road are my favorites.

Steely Dan is my all-time favorite group. The sound of their music is so appealing to me.
I was born in 1964 right after the Beatles came to the USA for the first time. I don’t really get the appeal of their music and I feel the same way about Elvis. Not a fan. I think if I had been a pre-teen when either were popular I would have probably been fans of both. The timing of both didn’t work well for me.

Tug, you ask a good question. The Beatles were breaking new ground in the 60s--not an easy thing to do. They certainly changed pop music and launched the "British Invasion." Other bands tried to copy them but ultimately failed. Still other groups went their own way, became very successful, and even outlasted the Beatles, building huge enduring fanbases--Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, and Crosby, Stills and Nash to name a few. "Best ever" is a little like beauty--depends on who you talk to and when you talk to them. From a money and fan standpoint, the Beatles were hugely successful. Artistically, one could argue that their music still endures across the planet. All of us probably have our favorite Beatles songs and can recite the lyrics even today. Does that make them best ever? Good question.

Beatles completely closed down most American artists of the day.
The deal then (and now for me) for most was Southern Soul.

One guy said something like, "We are getting shut out. Only James Brown can compete, and none of us understand what he is doing". I saw James a few times -- awesome!!

Beach Boys did OK as did Frankie Valli.

The Beatles are without a doubt the greatest of all time. I was a kid from the 80s but my dad got me listening to the Beatles and I was hooked. They had several albums that had 4 or 5 number one hits on each album.

Yes they are the greatest musicians/band ever,no debate! They did things during their time that set the standard for all music forever. Even Frank Sintra agreed. Musicians use compunters now,The Beatles did without. You need more proof, just see what Paul and Ringo are doing these days. Only image if John and George were still with us. A side story, The Beatles and The Stones were best friends. They would coordinate their music releases, to make sure both groups were successful.

Their greatness was evidenced by the fact that all four went on to have successful solo careers. Lennon and McCartney produced quality music for another decade. George Harrison had a great album, and Ringo had a decent album.

My testimony to the Beatles is I was once talking to a neighbor’s teenager who said he hated the Beatles. He went on to Clemson and took a music appreciation class, and later told me “I never knew how influential and talented the Beatles were”. I told him “see! you had to go to college to understand how great the Beatles were”

The Beatles' influence on 1960s music was their most significant accomplishment. Lennon and McCartney were great songwriters. George Harrison was a gifted guitarist.

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham, aka Led Zeppelin, have gotten recognition in more recent years for their influence and innovation. It shouldn't have taken so long.

Best is a subjective term as it depends on the preferences of an individual. I liked the Beatles ok but there many bands I prefer over them. Plus I don’t listen to a specific singer or group as I typically like less than 5% of anyone’s songs. My playlist on Spotify would be of an era or style of music (depending on my mood) and not of a specific group.

I will say that the 70s was my favorite era of music but maybe because I was born in the early 60s
