Rare optimism

14

Oct 29, 2023, 12:55 PM

Y’all will all probably down vote this & call me a coot but I really don’t care. I’m just going to leave this here & hopefully some of y’all agree.

I am very optimistic about next year.

1) Clemson has national championship caliber talent all over the field. If it weren’t for turnovers this team is 8-0. I believe that is a correctable issue in the off season.

2) with our DC as my example, I think it’s fair to say that year 2 under Riley could be exponentially better. Plus the major issues like receiver have already been addressed in recruiting (Wesco & Moore)

3) there is a chance we lose recruits yes, I am very well aware but Wesco already cleared the air saying he’s staying so all the other recruits could be thinking the same.

4) we also could lose players to the portal sure but CDS has been the best in the country at preventing that, why is this year any different

5) *hopefully* players like Wiggins, Carter, Trotter, Makuba & Brinningstool are furious with this season & elect to come back for revenge. Maybe it won’t happen but that is yet to be seen.

6) lastly, CDS shocked all of us by firing Streeter & bringing in Riley. He clearly hates what has become of this program. No reason to think he might fire other position coaches who are just not meeting the standard.

I know this is a TLDR for most of you but I wanted to put this out there. These players hate the way things are going more than anyone. It’s our job to support them, Go Tigers!!

Honestly, it feels like you are stretching a bit for these points.

I don’t see how you can say point #1 if you have been watching the games. Even without turnovers. This team has often looked slower than our opponents all year. We never look very threatening on offense. Nearly every drive feels like a struggle with the good plays mixed in amongst the bad. Very rarely have we actually looked like we were clicking for extended periods of time.

Point 4: how many players would you really be devastated by if they left in the portal? I think a bigger issue for us will be bringing guys in.

Point 5: let’s hope they could be motivated, but based on the way the team talks after losses it doesn’t feel like “furious” is ever a way they feel. It all seems too calm and positive. That could change of course.

The other points are fine.

So, I know it’s hard to admit this but the defense is absolutely stacked right now. While I hate Cades errors, he has the attributes of a great QB just gotta clean up the turnovers.

Also, you have to understand that a lot of the interviews are just media training & buzzwords for these guys. They aren’t really going to air out their issues & feelings to the media.

For example, it would be very very very bad for this team if any of the following players transferred:

Woods, Parker, Lukus, Pride, Covil, Woodaz, Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, Brinningstool or Barnes.

If those are the guys that start leaving, I don’t think you realize how bad Clemson will be

Re: Rare optimism

while technically you are right about could have been 8-0 if the turnovers were fixed, there are probably 20 or 30 shoulda coulda woulda undefeated teams out there right now. I think your point is probably we are one of the most talented and best 4-4 teams out there.

Which pro coach said you are what your record says? We need a qb and oline.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

I think Cade's deficiencies can't be unlearned

He has poor pocket awareness nor feel for pressure. With our OL problems with blitzes and good speed rushers we must have a qb that can avoid pressure.

He also has been consistently poor with situational awareness. This could be potentially overcome, but really a qb of his caliber should be better.

There is optimism and then there is delusion. Your post is the latter.

Re: Rare optimism

Oct 29, 2023, 2:22 PM

Carter and Wiggins are sure to leave. Trotter is still a possibility to leave. Even with S.Brown coming in, Woodaz being back, and optimism that J.Anderson will be a good player, I cannot see anything other than our LB Corp having weaker overall personnel to go along with (again) limited quality depth.

Makuba would be nuts to leave, even though he is having a very good year. I just think he is a tweener as far as NFL is concerned.

Our CB unit should be good, but will take a step backward. S.Jones (good CB) will be gone and J.Lukas (I’m worried that his shoulder is shot, similar to what sidelined Landen Zanders a couple of years back) may be done. T.Pride is an excellent player, all ACC caliber. But he’s not elite like N.Wiggins. In other words, we will have a weaker starting group and worse depth.

Safeties should be OK and Nickel should be outstanding, especially if Makuba stays as he should.

DT unit will still be solid assuming that P.Woods is healthy and stays healthy and T.Williams is fully fixed up.

DE unit scares me again for 2024 season. Maybe Hoeffler will be a good other DE to start alongside TJ Parker. Maybe Denhoff will make additional significant improvement; maybe not. Will Ojiebje be ready after RS’ing this year? Will S.Lawson develop into a guy who can provide some depth? Lots of ???’s at DE for next year; us not being elite is a certainty, not a question.

Briningstool? If he keeps catching 7+ passes and notching 75+ yards per game (on average for remaining 4+ games, then he’ll probably leave. With less impressive per game averages, he’d be smart to return. Neither Miami nor NCSU are the type of teams that inspire the ‘how did he pull that off?) type of reaction.

Coaches?

OC. I am pleased that G.Riley is toning down the offense to more closely align with what CK2 can do. Not sure if there is any further ‘toning it down’ that Riley can do. Finally, my optimism about G.Riley is improving. That said, if Dabo makes a big stones move to cut Riley loose and elevate J.Scott, then I’d be pleased.

OL. I’m worries that our linemen are still unsure about their blocking assignments as of game 8. My goodness, how could C.Sadler have not known to block the DE (instead, he teamed with M.Tate to double team NCSU’s DT) on that blind side assassination fumble sack of CK2? (The one where Mafah recovered the fumble and ‘only’ a 17 yard sack was the result.). What on earth has Thomas Austin been teaching his OL?

WR. I don’t blame T.Grisham for the WR problems. This will be unpopular, but I hope B.Collins comes back for his COVID year. We need for N.Turner to return to full health and prove that he can catch the ball consistently. A.Williams must return to full health. T.Brown and Stellato should be better (more consistent) with more experience. A.Randall … needs to prove it. Wesco and Moore? They need to be ready to go, along with RS FR’s Noble Johnson and Hannifin.

RB. I think we’re in trouble here. Shipley may be getting too beaten up to perform in 2024 as he did back in 2022. Our incoming RB recruit better be ready to go to accompany Mafah as our #2 RB.

(***). We will not be anywhere near having national championship caliber players all over the field for the 2024 season.

Re: Rare optimism

Oct 29, 2023, 5:27 PM

I think the most valid critique’s are that Grisham & Austin should be replaced. They have been here long enough & have never really shown they can be elite.

I do think everything you said is valid but my counter argument to your point is that all these players will develop. We never know who the stars of next year will be. If I would’ve told you TJ Parker was going to be as good as he has shown, most probably wouldn’t have believed that.

A guy like Jamal Anderson has the size of Isaiah Simmons, he could be a superstar. The talent is absolutely there. If Carter & Trotter come back our LB core will be top 5 in the country. The D-Line has so much potential it’s insane.

Also, Pride & Lukus are great players. Barnes looks great also, the defense has a bright future.

Re: Rare optimism

Oct 29, 2023, 2:30 PM

1. No, only if you look at high school evaluations. When you look at the play this year, who has been national title caliber on offense? Which lineman? Which receiver? Do we have a single receiver who would have cracked the two deep on our 2018 and 2019 teams? Antonio and Tyler are decent, but are not NFL stars. The line is absolutely horrible. Shipley is highly overrated. Mafah could be good with a great offensive line as he's a wrecking ball once he gets going, but we don't have a line who can make holes. Cade has talent, but he is reckless, makes terrible decisions, stares down receivers, and doesn't have the arm strength of a championship team. He's decent enough, but he hasn't developed at all this year to where you can say he's elite. I don't know that we have a single NFL player on the offense. And let's not even discuss special teams.

I'm very pleased with the defense thus far (though I don't know how they'd do against a truly elite offense), but have you not seen how old our defense is? Of our 11 starters, 7 are seniors or graduates. They're gone. Of our 4 juniors, that includes Trotter, Carter, Wiggins, and Mukuba. I'd guess at least 3 declare for the draft. So we're losing almost the entirety of our elite defense. There are some bright spots in the backups (Barnes, Parker, Woods) but a ton of question marks.

2. Riley's a great offensive coordinator. But to be able to be an offensive coordinator, you have to be able to have freedom to call your own plays and the right to hire the right person at the positions. Riley wasn't able to hire his own staff but had to hire Dabo's unqualified flunkies and Dabo interferes with playcalling even though he's incapable of being a gametime coach. I don't see how Riley will improve while Dabo keeps both hands behind his back.

3. Agreed. We could lose recruits. And let's see if Wesco and Brown remain if we drop 3 of our last 4 games and miss bowls completely.

4. Dabo was good at stopping transfers out until NIL became a thing. We've lost a decent number of players to the portal ever since. But for the sake of argument, I'll assume we don't lose a single impact player.

5. Stupid argument. 5 players won't revenge and will turn down millions in the NFL, especially after seeing how that hurt the players who did this year. They only risk injury and their draft stock. As I said, 3 of those defenders will go. Briningstool will probably come back. He's not good enough to declare this year.

6. I hope you're right there. But it will be much harder for him to fire someone who played for him who he recruited, coached, and then brought in to coach for him. I think there's an off chance he might get rid of someone, but I doubt he'll fire enough people as he needs to, unless someone forces him (Nikki Haley was instrumental to his firing Streeter as she's on the board and repeatedly mocked the Clemson offense last year).

Re: Rare optimism

Oct 29, 2023, 5:42 PM

I honestly just think you have a very pessimistic out look, that’s why I made this post and titled it “rare optimism”.

I’m aware that recruits could decommit, I’m aware that Trotter, Carter and Wiggins are all more than likely gone. I’m aware that it’s an off chance that CDS lets go of Grisham or Austin.

What I’m saying is there are things that can still swing in favor of Clemson going forward. There is no reason to think Trotter or Carter or any of the guys that can leave, wont leave. Those players would be the leaders of the defense/team and I think that would be the best thing that can happen

Also, I don’t think it’s a bad thing that we are losing 6 super seniors. I love those guys but there’s a reason they’re not in the league yet. It’s time for new blood.

Lastly, the firing of Streeter showed that CDS hates the way things are going just like the rest of us. It is hard to lose a DC like Venables who stuck around for so long, and Elliot as well. But firing coaches in the middle of the season is the worst thing you could do, CDS is one of the best in the land and is going to do everything he feels is right to win.

I wish I could be optimistic

Oct 29, 2023, 3:08 PM

But I heard very similar things a crazy of years ago. The offense is new and young and will get much better in 2022.
2022 comes and it's still the same ol same old.
Then 2023 comes and it starts over ...our players are young.

Sometime they gotta grow up!

Nothing wrong with that. It's a recoverable position we're in. Very recoverable. Not this season but next.
