I Like The New Portal Rules

It creates a situation where the roster is solidified prior to Spring Camp, and the players are committed for the entire season. This is helpful and allows for better installs and fewer interruptions or distractions.

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.

I agree that the new rules are an improvement, but I’m still very hesitant to use the word committed. Players are still quitting after 3-4 games and announcing their intention to enter the portal when it opens.

Yet, the portal doesn't open until January, and the season is over with by then. If a player refuses to participate in the team functions the school can dismiss the player and pull their scholarship.

Everyone is piling on Dabo for not using the portal, but before the year began, Clemson looked great on paper. Have the new NIL and portal rules changed the landscape? Everyone knows that they have, but that does not mean that all of Clemson's woes are attributed to Dabo's limited use of the portal. Indeed, one could argue that in the year that Dabo used the portal most heavily, Clemson has had its worst preseason projection to actual production ratio. Winning is a strange thing, as all athletes ought to understand. Am I disappointed in Clemson's performance this year? Of course, but it is overly simplistic to attribute this to Dabo's failure to use the portal more heavily.

Yes J. Clarke, Clemson had some returning top level players with great potential

to excel in 2025. It did not happen as hoped. The portal will bring needed depth and speed if used with focus. Clemson brought in 3 transfer players in 2025. The LB backing up top performing Sammy Brown and captain Wade Woodaz has not played significantly. Neither has 6'5" WR Tristan Smith who should get more reps now due to Wesco's injury. DE Will Heldt has some of the top PFF ratings on the Defense.

Compare this number (3) to other programs who have brought in dozens of players over the past five years, and Clemson's at a competitive disadvantage. The backup talent at Clemson is too often walk-on level talent. And yes, many love to tout the superb Hunter Renfrow and handful of other walk-ons who have developed over the past 15 years. But they are outliers and not the rule.

It's difficult to get game-ready with practice competition when the back-ups are scrubs and depth is non-existent when inevitable injuries occur (always part of the season).

No, it is his inability to develop and prepare players. Some coaches recruit well, other coaches develop talent while other coaches hire family and alumni.
The proof is in the pudding. Clemson football is going in the wrong direction.

It takes lots of work. Both film and character study. The benefits are not only a talent infusion, but the building of depth creates real competition for positions as well as closer to game-level practices.

Respectfully intended, Tiger coaches and staff need to get off their behinds and put in the work. Hopefully, this process is already in work with Coach Swinney's full support and leadership.

Come on David, report honestly. There are scholarship numbers and using the Portal is not about wanting to win, it is about staying within those numbers. You have always given a list of players on scholarship numbers and the math is simple but the window is small. A team starts with the number of players on scholarship, add the high school players that will sign in December, subtract players who have no more eligibility, subtract underclass guys who enter either the Portal or NFL draft. Simple but so complicated because until guys make their decisions, a coach does not know ho many scholarships will be available.

It is a one year scholarship. These players have been involved in "cuts" since jr high. If you dont spring clean than you have nobody to blame but your stubborn self in the summer and fall.

Maybe holding people to a performance standard will actually help with developing champions of life and better husbands and fathers. A football coach at any salary has as priority #1 developing football players.

This site was built on Clemson Athletics and a place for Clemson Fans to get news and to share thoughts.
If the sites reporters constantly trash the program and disparage the coach how long before the coach leaves and the fans leave.
You always always cast everything in the absolute worst light.
Maybe you think that makes you look honest but it really just makes you look like a pessimist and a bitter person! What did Dabo do to Tigernet?

Team talent has decreased 1965tiger over the past five years. You are a great alum and fan, but there is no competent news organization (locally, regionally, or nationally) endorsing Dabo's decision to provide scholarships to less talented walk-ons over quality portal transfers.

There is simply no depth on these Tiger teams. It impacts the ability to have competitive practices and to replace injured starters.

The only problem with your analysis is it’s just not true.
One thanks for the compliment, truly, but I am not an Alumni. I am just a guy who likes purple and Orange and felt a kinship to what Clemson and Clemson fans used to represent! Good honest hard working God Fearing Family and loyalty.
Maybe the talent has decreased but every single professional analyst seem to think the talent was just fine before the year! Practically every starter was preseason All Conference. Were all those people fooled or lied to.
I would think they had done some research and actually watched these guys played in a game.
The other thing is Dabo has done nothing but win for over a decade and a half and made everybody connected to Clemson in any way winners and money!
Now you hit a bad patch and Dabo is either dumb or Stubborn or to religious ..
I will stick with Dabo! If y’all fire him I got other things I can do.
Thanks for the conversation!

Well it’s obvious something is wrong and mistakes have been made. It’s not trashing the team or the coaches to point out the obvious. It’s not the same game it was just a few years ago. Many of us don’t like it but it’s adapt or die. We all hope Dabo and his staff can adapt. So far they haven’t.

In the last five years that everyone claims there has been this huge decline and failure Clemson won 3 Conference Championships.

2020 10-2
2021 10-3
2022 11-3
2023 9-4
2024 10-4

Now that players are able to be overtly paid, can programs require a contract? This would protect them from getting completely screwed by a surprise defection on the 15th day with no time to react and replace the player. I don't see why this wouldn't be allowed, if it isn't already in use. I hate that college sports have basically become the minor leagues, but it is what it is, and we have to adapt or die.

The way things are done right now is not sustainable!
There will have to be rules and regulations and limits.
The entire sport will collapse other wise and then someone will remember Dabo tried to tell us.

The NFL could not last with these rules or lack there of.

I think when this whole portal and NIL thing started, Dabo had a dream to not just buy a new team every year like Florida State and I admire him for that. He wanted to do things the right way. However, he went to an extreme with that philosophy and wound up losing out on talent. This was going to be the big year that validated his philosophy because we do have a lot of talent on the team this year but his poor coaching staff decisions stunted the development of the talent we have. Players also do not seem to be too worried that they may lose their starting role to a motivated new kid on the block from another program (or even a younger player on the team who they have seniority over), so maybe their motivation isn't strong enough either. Next year and beyond, the talent level may drop precipitously, because of Dabo's philosophy to never pay a player to come here - only to keep the players who have performed well here. And I also fear we will lose a chunk of the talent we already have because players want to and can go play for a winner. Dabo will have to do a major course correction and a huge mea culpa as soon as this season ends to fix that. That will take a burning desire to win and tremendous humility, since he has planted his stake in the ground so forcefully and publicly over these issues. Saban changed his ways when the college football landscape changed and had tremendous success. We shall see if Dabo has that ability and willingness in him come January.

Saban retired because he saw what the ramifications would be of the transfer portal & all of the "pay-for-play" money being pumped into the "student athlete internship system" (as it formerly existed),& he didn't want to deal with it, be sullied by it, or have his legacy at Alabama be tarnished by the eventual cesspool that would be created by it. It seems to me he was pretty prescient! There were reports of groups of players coming to his office & demanding more guaranteed money or they would enter the portal & transfer as a group.

Which players did you want Dabo to let go to bring in the portal players?
Also did Dabo and Clemson not make an agreement a pledge to the players they recruited and signed.
So until recently you could have what 85 scholarship players on the Roster ? Now it’s going to be 105 I think.
Could be wrong on the #s
But based on the team ending last year which players did you want to cut?
What players did you want to bring in?

No reason CV would leave as he appears to have a starting role wrapped up after last week - unless he loses all his receivers I guess....I'm more worried about if we have enough players to field a defense next year! Agree our lack of speed on both sides of the ball is glaring but I would just say, if you can't cover anyway, you might as well bring pressure and take your chances.
