Question about out of bounds call
Sep 20, 2013, 1:24 PM
|
|
For all the crying about the out of bounds call am I the only one that sees the blatant, two hand hold against Darius Robinson on the play? It is happening right at the point where the other Robinson was ruled out of bounds. I don't see where he stepped out of bounds, but if the ref had his head up instead of staring at the sideline, he would have seen the hold which should have set the Pack 10 yards further back than they ended up getting it. Or, if he hadnt have been held he most certainly would have forced him out of bounds. Bad calls happen in football but things have a way of balancing out. I was already screaming about the hold before I realized they had ruled him out of bounds.

Well, that was kind of my point. There is a lot of consternation, and roughly 1000 threads, about whether he was out or not. Who cares? They shouldn't have scored on the play due to the hold, the ref screwed up the call, but the net effect was the same. As many threads as there have been I didn't see a single mention of the hold.

I seen it too. I rewound it and watched it several times.
Of course, coots, edisto tiger and the Wuffies dont care about that missed call.

I've seen that pick, but don't know the source and it seems a little iffy to me. I rewatched the play several times on my DVR even toying with the digital zoom and he seemed in to me. But didn't matter to me because I thought the play should have been blown dead at that spot and the pack backed up another 10 yards. Whether he was in or out isn't really worth arguing to me because the hold is so blatant it shows the net result of the play was right.

So you are talking about this block here (youtube link)...

I don't know...the other player was infront of him delivering a "block" aka a legal hold. It does seem like the defender had a lot of time to shed the block, but the video is in slow motion...It does look like holding, but I'm not so sure that qualifies as a penalty...it's close...

Yeah...I'm thinking this is a case of "legal holding"

Found this on another site: The interpretation for holding is that if the hands are kept inside the frame of the body, there is no separation between the hands and the body (which could then necessitate a pulling action) and the hands are not used to twist or pull the defender down then holding will not be called. From a practical point of view in this situation it would be very difficult to tell that the hands had a hold of the jersey so any of this type of action is considered legal.
So the "keys" are (1) keep the hands inside and (2) keep the defender close to you so that your arms are not seen as reaching and grabbing. So I think it was a legal block.

The block is legal but you can see Robinson turn his head and see where he needs to go and at that point the pack player holds to keep him from pulling away. He needs to go back and away from the defender, not around or through him - no way to impede that without holding. There is an overhead angle that is a gif on sbnation that shows it better. He had position on the Pack defender towards the sideline.

I believe the still photo shows that his foot was actually on the line and thus he was in fact out of bounds. You should outboard of his right foot. I don't see any. Obviously, it was close, but I also saw the hold on Robinson that should have cancelled the entire gain and backed them up 10 more yards. Refs are human, but over the course of a game their errors tend to balance out.

Wasn't reviewable because it was a dead ball situation. Ref blew the whistle. At least that is what I understand.

I'm going with "the guy was 5 yards out of bounds."
