QB Recruiting for 2016
Mar 20, 2015, 4:45 PM

I recently saw an article on BR about Clemson being in the top 5 of one of the more highly rated quarterback recruits in the 2016 cycle, Ervin 'Woody' Barrett. I was wondering if we were actively recruiting him, since we already have a pretty good QB for this cycle in Zerrick Cooper. Any thoughts?

Cooper is 2016 and there is room for one QB in that class barring something happening to one of the two we brought in this cycle.

When I said 'this cycle' I meant 2016, sorry I should've clarified more. But thanks for the info.

Probably won't take more than one in 2016 and Cooper is a good one - just needs to shake off the rust from injury and he will see a rise in rankings. One in 2017 too barring transfers or injuries. Then maybe 2 in 2018, one of which will likely be Dakereon Joyner.

I really like Austin kendall. Think he is a stud. To answer your question I think a lot will depend on the 2 qbs we got last year. Both have question marks at playing qb at this level. If one doesn't look like they can cut it I would hope we move on Kendall or another.

I love Zerrick Cooper. Chazz Surratt is another good one too

This kid is no joke. He has played so many different positions for his team throughout his career and racked up some gaudy numbers. Plus he's a smart kid, great GPA, and I understand him in interviews. Check him out. Not bad film at all. I would be surprised if he doesn't end up going to UNC.
QB/ Ath - Chazz Surratt 6-3 200 East Lincoln High, Denver, NC
Offered on 10/1/13. 4* #11 QB by Yahoo Rivals. 24/7 Composite #10 Dual Threat QB, # 279 overall. Runs a 4.5 40. Recently led East Lincoln to a 16-0 season, 2A state title and was named State Player of the Year by NCPreps. This is his second state title while at the helm for East Lincoln. His brother plays WR and is also a 2017 recruit. He completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 4,349 yards and 53 touchdowns with 13 interceptions while rushing for 1,272 yards and 20 touchdowns. Surratt broke Chris Leak’s state record for total yards in a season. In 2012, had 562 rush yds with 8 TDs, 288 pass yds 2 TDs, 56 catches for 1,107 yds 13 TDs, 64 tackles with two sacks and 4 INTs. Has offers from UT, UNC, GT, Wake, NCSU, BC, Duke, and ECU. Has played QB, RB, WR, and DB. Is a tremendous athlete who can plays multiple positions. Also has a 4.4 GPA. Considered a UNC lean. Also a basketball player.

Short read on Surratt from opposing coach Sean Joyce, "Joyce remembers how a heavy rain pelted the field in the fourth quarter. He thought it might slow East Lincoln’s passing game. Joyce changed his defense to position more defenders near the line of scrimmage. “The whole time, I’m sitting there thinking, ‘No way they’re going to throw in this weather. We’ll send pressure,’ ” Joyce said. “And doggone it, if (Chazz) didn’t throw a strike, about 60 yards in the air. That broke our back.”

Hard to tell anything on him. He throws the ball so naturally but he hasn't even come close to perfecting his throwing looks raw and skilled at the same time. Very odd qb prospect. Hope the coaches get him in camp for a closer look maybe in person they could tell.

He's a very unique player for sure.

I do know it's safe to say that he's got plenty of athletic ability. Sure, he's raw as a passer but he's led his team to two straight state titles. Not bad. He can play so many positions that he'd fit well on any roster. I wouldn't mind us taking him as an athlete and perhaps putting him as a DB. Surratt has great ball skills, high points it, and has great quickness. He has the size as well to play at the safety position.
Having said that, you could put him at WR as well and I'm sure he'd do fine. You could also have him return kicks although I'm sure you could find a faster player. It wouldn't be a stretch to see him in the nickelback position. He's a bright kid and I'm sure that transitioning into any position may not be as difficult on him as opposed to others.

I don't see Clemson taking him unless he is a ab. Sure he is a great at but not better than. The skill position player we get now. Remember this is 2a play he is playing.

I just can't say enough about Zerrick Cooper. The kid is special. If he stays healthy, he'll be the next to shine here at the QB position.
