QB Recruiting

Should our QB recruiting approach move away from California and other west coast areas? It’s obvious DJ didn’t play through pressure well, but I think he just didn’t fit the scheme we have in the first place. Look at how Deshaun, Trevor, and now Cade ran the offense. 2 from GA and Cade from TX. I could definitely see DJ very much benefiting from a PAC 12 “run and sling it” offense.
Sidenote: I understand DJ highly succeeded in certain games. This post regards his overall success.

Sometimes things just don't work out.
I mean, Bryce Young did fine going to Bama so I wouldn't discount players from states or areas just because one high profile recruit didn't work out.
You want the best you can get and typically pulling in a good recruiting class is going to net you more success than a banking on a bunch of 2-3 Stars to turn into your next Renfrow and ETNs.

I don’t think I’m ready to take the play of ann individual and apply it to an entire state or region. We missed. It happens sometimes.

DJ didn't handle the NIL money well at all. Post game pressers he was always dressed like a pimp. Wanted to look like Scam Newton I guess. This had to have an affect on his team mates who were not getting any money. I remember when Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys complained during an interview that his offensive line was not doing there job in run blocking. The next game, on the very first play, a run play was called and the entire offensive line just stood up and blocked no one. Dorsett was tackled for a five yard loss. I wonder if DJ came across the wrong way to his team mates and they just didn't play up to their potential.

Not sure which is more stupid: Your post or the OP.

Stop recruiting the most populated state AND surrounding areas because 1 QB did not meet the OP's expectations.
How you think you remember him dressing post game and correlating that to rumors of him making money (no one knows for sure if so, how much, or how often) and then saying it affected the team.
Solid dumbassery in this thread.

His teammates appear to think he was a solid guy and team player, so no...

I think DJ did get ahead of himself early at Clemson. NIL definitely helped with his weight gain I would guess as he mentioned he did go to fast food (Bojangles) quite a bit in that 2021 season. I think it’s a reach to say how it affected the O line that game or at any time, due to none of us actually being his teammates in that locker room. All in all, I believe DJ truly held himself back early at Clemson. And he never grasped our offense.

DJ has the "sling it' part, but not so much the "run" part.
Our QB recruiting will be OK - DJ was a prospect who contacted us (or perhaps Big Dave did) and expressed an interest in playing at Clemson. Until then, I don't think we had considered him (or anyone else on the west coast) as a QB. It wasn't so much the style of west coast QBs as it was out of our normal recruiting geography. Anyway, our coaches bit on the tape, reputations, accomplishments and determination of DJ and deemed him to be someone who could be useful in our scheme.
Something went badly wrong. I don't know what. Geography, lifestyle surroundings, home circumstances, NIL influence, reading his own clippings after freshman year..... could be any one or more of those or something else entirely. But something caused him to apparently lose the edge, given the weight gain, digression in footwork, slow reads - much like he just completely lost interest in being a good player. He said the right things, but his actions didn't back it up, imo.
Maybe our coaches just missed something on the selection or maybe it was player development(coaching) after he got to Clemson, but if we have another 5* go down that path, we'll know where to look for the answers..... maybe.

Interesting thing is Caleb Williams was our choice next to DJ, but DJ committed first. Caleb just won the Heisman.
I agree that life in Clemson wasn’t so great during the 2021 season. Even heard that he stopped asking Big Dave to stop attending his games before this current season because of how it affected him in 2021. It might have been just lifestyle fit.

Deshaun, Trevor, and Cade all came from the west, west of Clemson. Jordan too. We've gotten good QBs from every direction. I wouldn't exclude a QB recruit just because of the direction the coaches will need to travel to recruit him.

You seemed to take “West” to lightly. Talking about across the country, not a state beside us.

players from California don't handle pressure well, while players from Georgia and Texas do.

I think you understand that Clemson has not failed their QBs since Tajh Boyd. You’re being sarcastic, but DJ did so badly that I think we can certainly conclude that DJ’s did not fit our offense the way he was in HS. There’s a reason why he was so highly rated. QBs don’t just bust here, even Kelly Bryant got us to a playoff. And Cade immediately changed the team in his first “full game”.
Nowhere in my post did I suggest difference in handling pressure between DJ and others, but difference in Offensive style from East and West.
Better luck next time.

West coast players are soft. There's a reason the PAC 12 blows.
