Tahj Boyd > Deshawn Watson?

Thank you to all posting Sammy Watkins career highlights over the last few days.
After rewatching and rewatching and rewatching those clips. I have been struggling with an internal dilemma. Was TB10 actually better than DW4?
I know Deshawn accomplished more leading the team to a NC but give Boyds team the same defense, same Oline....does Clemson win a crystal football back then?
Who knows. Thoughts?

How about DW with Tajh's stable of thoroughbred studs at boundary receiver?

Correct but in 2011 Tajh had...
Deandre Hopkins Sammy Watkins Martavis Bryant Adam Humphries Jaron Brown Charone Peake
Beyond the WR room... Andre Ellington Dwayne Allen Brandon Ford
DW4 would broken national records with this group.

At the deep ball? Sure As an overall player? Not particularly close. DW4 elevated the program for good reason, he was a different caliber. Tajh was a great college QB with some tools but sometimes shrunk in major moments, Deshaun only got better the bigger the stage.

TB10 set a record for setting records here as QB and was a major factor in propelling Dabo's early recruiting successes and our on the field fortunes.
It reminds me a terrible thought I've often pondered - had Clowney committed to us and played his career here instead of SCar, we would very likely have been title contenders in 2012 and 2013, 2012 especially - he was that much of a difference maker. We likely don't let FSU come back from that hefty lead we established at Doak, and likely swap out the SCar game later with him on our line instead of theirs. That was the rematch year of Bama / LSU that kickstarted the CFP process so we would have taken Bama's spot there.

that we'd had in a while at Clemson. DW4's game got better the higher the stakes. He elevated his play in big moments. Tajh was great as well and had his moments but didnt have that elite gear like Deshaun. DW4 was not going to be denied and we all knew it. We were spoiled.
That last game Tajh played against SCar where he was hearing footsteps all night by Clowney and just was rattled that whole game was something Deshaun never did. And thats the difference IMO. There aren't many out there like Deshaun though so I don't blame Tajh for not having that b/c he was really good too.

Tajh took us from Tommy Bowden to perennial Top 10/15.
DW took us from Top 15 to CFP National Champions.
An equally large move on each part, and DW doesn't happen without Tajh Boyd coming before him.
I'd argue each had comparable surrounding talent at the skill positions (RB and WR). Each had good mobility. Each led us to unlikely wins in games we were used to losing.
However, as individual players, Watson gets the nod.

As good as Tajh was for some reason in some big games he shrunk. Not all big games. Obviously he played amazing against LSU and Ohio state. He shrunk in that FSU game. Same Twice against Carolina. But I wouldn’t trade the LSU win or Ohio state wins for Carolina wins. At the end of the day it played out how it was supposed to. Tajh is the piece that started the whole thing. I Deshaun never seemed to shrink.

Hard to say and who knows with the same supporting cast how things would have played out.
Watson had the “IT” factor and I never got that feeling with Boyd. I would compare records against SC but SC had a really good defense when Boyd was here, so not thinking that would be fair either.
Great post and definitely food for thought.

For me it's not even close. Tahj was good don't get me wrong, but I never felt like he could win any game no matter what. There wasn't a game when Deshaun was the starter that I didn't feel like we couldn't win. Even if he turned it over. Deshaun as a college player was clutch. With that being said, this program wouldn't be where it is at without Tahj.

I don’t think so. Hear me out.
Tajh would get rattled when he was hit hard a few times during a game (remember Clowney and USUCK) and those Alabama defenses would have surly done the same.
With DW4, the harder the D played the better he got. DW4 actually got better/clutch under pressure.
JMO and nothing more. Love them both!

No. Boyds games against the coots where he looked like a deer in the headlights is his biggest knock. We were better than we showed and he played awful. Also his game against FSU.
DW4 had ice water in his veins. He feared no team. If Boyd faces Bama with that defense he would have struggled.

Interesting take. Tahj helped CLemson to their only win vs. UGA in the last nine meetings and since 1990. DW only played UGA once in 2014. Most here would probably say DW.
It's a similar take with UGA's Aaron Murray vs. Stetson Bennett. Aaron was more talented and has a lot of UGA records, but didn't have Stetson's OLine and Defense. With a must win game on the line, I'm taking Stetson every time though. He was the mailman.

Triggered much? DW couldn’t stop Chubb, Gurley, and Michel with 328 yards rushing.
You mean Cole Stoudt? The dude your godlike coach determined was better than DW? It sounds like he can’t evaluate talent worth a dime. Same thing this year with your WRs, according to many on here.

NIck Saban couldn't have built a program at USCe like Steve.
I don't like SOS, I didn't like him when he was at Duke or Florida and I didn't hated him at USCe. He beat us when he was at Duke, and he would have beaten us at Florida if we'd played and he caught Dabo before Dabo had built a team.
It's not Tajh Boyd's fault we lost to the coots. Be honest and give SOS his dues.

Love some Tajh Boyd, maybe my fav QB ever at Clemson

DW4 was a better QB IMO, not really all that close.
Tajh had the nicest deep pass I have ever seen, almost as nice as Dan Marino or Warren Moon. However, he did not have the competitive nature of a DW4 and you could see that when it come to the better competition. DW4 had a relentless nature to always overcome any failure(turnover) and helped Clemson win games they otherwise do not win. His play against Alabama in the National Championship loss and the win were unique and I consider those to be the greatest QB play ever at Clemson.
While at it, here is my thoughts on Clemson best QB's
1. DW4 2. TL16 3. Homer Jordan 4. Tajh Boyd 5. Woody Dantzler (my opinion, but honestly not better than Steve Fuller) 6. Steve Fuller 7. Rodney Williams

We were in an offense that catered to his skill set and had one of the best stable of WR's ever in CFB.
There were things that TB was better at but over all it's as hard call. Imagine if we had the 2015 - 2016 defenses while he was there.
However, if we are down 5 with 2 minutes to go in the National Championship against Alabama, I am picking DW4 every time.

TB10 had what might be the greatest group of receivers ever assembled on one college team. My goodness the talent at WR was immense. TB10 was tough as nails and never quit. His teams didn't have the defensive support that DW4 had and TB10 was not as consistent with his accuracy. Tb10 didn't throw picks like DW4 was prone to do. I'd take either one and go to war with em. Tb10 got it all started. DW4 took it to the top of the mountain.

Different teams, team mates, coaches...make it impossible to do more than give a personal opinion and I won't give that in a public forum for it would be an insult to the one I didn't choose as best.
During the dark times, when DJ was QB, I longed for either of them to be behind center rather than DJ.
