Purple Uniform Discussion

Sep 21, 2016, 10:04 AM

I know purple is one of our official colors (the other being orange) and as such there are people on here who strongly feel we should wear purple jerseys and/or pants regularly.

But I've been coming to Clemson games in DV since at least 1965 and I don't recall ever seeing a Frank Howard team, for example, in purple jerseys and definitely never in purple pants. Purple has always been as been as far as I remember a trim color for jerseys. I don't remember purple during the 70s or 80s, etc. but remember blue trim at times.

I don't know of a precedent that requires us to be wearing solid purple jerseys/pants in the past 50 years.

yep... we did.. but somewhere along the line, someone thought navy would be better than purple.. and, it was this way 'til about '02-'03.. (cant remember).. but i just remember them painting everything that was navy around the stadium.. scoreboard.. letters.. signs, etc.. purple..

Sugar Blues were brought back during the Howard reign as I recall. A huge part of Clemson football. Coach S. doesn't like to make changes when things are going well and I totally support him. Just put the right guys in those Tiger suits!

I don't think a university precedent should require us to

wear any specific uniform combination.

University precedents should be worried about much higher level issues than uniforms.

Clemson wore purple jerseys twice in 1991. As I recall, that was the first time we'd used purple since 1939.

Tommy Bowden liked to mix up purple and orange. He introduced purple pants. He also introduced the all-purple uniforms which IMO are a crowd favorite but should be used sparingly. The use of them for our military appreciation "Purple Out" is genius, IMO. Besides tying in with the theme, it also gets the whole purple uniform discussion out of everyone's system for the season.

Personally I love the purple jerseys, but once a year is about as often as I want to see them. I don't like the purple pants unless they're with a purple jersey.

Does anybody remember when Dabo said something along the lines of "we are building a brand".

NEWS FLASH: There ARE people who go to school for this.

Unless your degree required you to study the intricacies of design, or your wife has to dress you frequently, then you probably don't know what you are talking about.

Jersey design and color combo should be based on aesthetics - "what is visually appealing?"

I remember an explanation years ago from Howard...

Sep 21, 2016, 10:53 AM

In the earlier years, the purple uniforms because of material and dye, would not hold their color. Uniforms faded after a few washings. Became lavender in color. When early TV required us to wear Orange, it appeared on black and white TV too close to the white of the other team. That is how we began with blue unis in the Sugar Bowl.
