Public Service Announcement Concerning Stamps.

Last week the info was on Sugar overload and why so many are pump but happy.
Today it's about our Federal Gov moving stamp prices up for 2nd time this short year..
From 68 cents to 73 cents beginning Sunday July 14th.
Saying, be aware.
The Forever stamp started out at about 41 cents and is still a relative bargain if you had to drive that letter to Washington DC.

The USPS is an unmitigated disaster. Their volume is roughly half what it was 20 years ago, and they have annual losses of 6 to 8 billion per year. Here in ATL, their accuracy rating is a dismal 63% compared to 93% target. Not to mention the amount of mail fraud perpetrated by its employees, and the pending lawsuits across the nation. Needs to be privatized. Still holding on to my stamp collection though.

Totally agree with you. I cringe every time I have to go to my local po. A snail in cold weather moves faster than they do. Good luck if you are looking for a package. The people years ago that you could depend on to do their job are long gone. I pay most of my bills on line and avoid them unless necessary. Most of what they deliver is junk mail. DEI killed the po all they need to do is bury it now.

Heck you’ve got your Trump appointee in there now from the private sector as Postmaster General - and bless his heart - he’s stuck it out but can’t implement changes because hands are tied. Over the years they’ve hired all your well known management consulting firms to assess and present strategies. They’ve hired former big wigs in these consulting firms to run the USPS (then again, having been a consultant right out of grad school …doesn’t surprise me when it’s time to apply theory things fall flat).
Yes, there are legacy union issues. But to me the biggest issue for the USPs is that CONGRESS WILL NOT let USPS run like a business. From the most basics of basics, congress will ##### about the USPS, BUT they don’t want THEIR constituents impacted. A lot of this is from those in congress representing the flyover/most rural of areas. “Don’t close my post office” …”Don’t go to a four day delivery…my district of 15k people needs six day delivery .::what we gonna do we don’t even has broadband?!… blah blah.
Once again - congress grandstanding but full of ####.

I don't want it to be run like a business, nor would I want our public parks or public libraries to be run that way. I'm in favor of curtailing actual wasteful spending, but I don't consider delivering to remote areas, or paying decent wages and benefits to postal workers, to be wasteful.

You and I are actually aligned on the topic I think.
I don’t consider it wasteful either overall. Its not like Amazon or UPS etc want to device last mile in rural areas. Also in many areas the post office still is the hub of the community.
My statement / diatribe is directed at those who say “USPS sucks and can’t do diddly.”
So for those folks who want to see it “run like a business” - to me that means run it like a “for profit” enterprise. I don’t agree with that. Privatization doesn’t work for all systems. Right now it is a hybrid private/publoc - it should be more publicly run imho.
I live in a semi-rural area myself and yes I actually know people who work at the post office in both metro and rural areas -management and “craft” as the union people call themselves.
So I mentioned some extreme examples but I maintain that congress ties the hand of USPS leadership to do anything meaningful as far as cost / waste containment.

This will make it that much more expensive for bill collectors to reach me.

I tell them that I have an old hat with all bills inside. On the first of the month I reach in and randomly select one to pay off and if they call me again I'm taking their name out of the hat.

Mail service is fine in my area. My packages almost always get here quickly and I don't think I've ever had anything stolen. I don't know why people make a big deal about the USPS "losing money". It's a public service. The point is to serve everyone, not just the people who live in profitable areas. Why does it need to make a profit? How much money did your local police or fire department "lose" last year, or the military? Surely you rural folks realize you'd be the ones paying the most in a fully privatized system, right?

Difference to me is the police don't charge for their services. Since USPS does, it doesn't need to make a profit, but be run like a business and at least not lose vast sums of money.

Who do you think wants to pay for you to send or receive paper mail? Someone has to work to earn money to pay for public service. Everyone who sends mail via the UPS should be forced to pay their share of the billions the postal service spends every year. Most of us would opt out of personal postal service in a skinny minute. If businesses had to pay the actual and full cost of sending out advertising the junk mail all of us throw away every working day would disappear.

Donate to Shriners Hospital. I get a solicitation about twice a month. Donate just twice annually. The return envelopes have unused stamps. Last one received a couple days ago had .73 affixed. Currently have over $45 in .10 and .05 stamps. Cut them and paste on number 10 envelopes. Have seen just a couple of their return envelopes with a postage paid mark. Curious those aren't used exclusively as the rate for 501c3 entities looks to be between .60 and .63.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or the USPS in upstate SC is above average. I don't know.

But I've never had a problem. I cannot remember a mail piece that was "lost". I've been in this house for almost 30 years, and the worst thing that has ever happened is my neighbor has gotten some of my mail a couple times. If anything, it's amazing to me that I can send a card or letter to my buddy in Calif, and 2 or 3 days later he's reading it. Without fail.
I order stuff from all over the world and can track it real time. I got no problem with the USPS.

Hmmmmmm, why hasn't Mr Louis deJoy, appointed by our 45th president, fixed these perceived problems? By the way, who the Hail uses stamps anymore?
