Proud to be a Clemson Tiger

Jul 30, 2012, 3:03 PM

Not trolling, just wanted to share. My Father very recently passed away. He was a true Clemson Tiger, IPTAY 33 years and the works. I just received a very nice personal, hand written condolence letter (addressed to my Father's home in c/o me) from none other than President Jim Barker. I don't know how he finds the time to do so but it made me smile and say I'm #### proud to be a Clemson Tiger! A real class act he is.

I always heard he does that, and it does make you proud to be a Clemson Tiger. It speaks volumes about the kind of people associated with Clemson, faculty, students, alumni, and fans.

My uncle was a graduate of Clemson and passed away last summer. My father also attended Clemson a year behind his brother. They were at Clemson when it transitioned from a military school. There was no letter because my uncle wanted it kept private. There was no funeral and no mention in the newspaper. To this day people in the community will ask about him and his wife not realizing that he, his wife, and his daughter all passed away in the last 2 years. My father is very into Clemson, has been an IPTAY rep for many years. He is of course older than most of you on this board, but if you knew the Cockfield boys of Lake City, my uncle Donald died last year, but my father, Marvin, still lives in the area.

There are a few of us who are older. I was there while it was still totally military- 1950 grad. The president's system is not fool proof . My oldest brother- class of 1942, wounded three times in the So. Pacific-died at 90 years of age last year and we didn't get a letter.Of course it could be that he didn't know who to send the letter to since there were two other brothers who were graduates(1950 and 1951). We are a TIGER family!

If you're from anywhere near that area and have any age on you you certainly know of Bo Cockfield - that boy could sure run hard.

I was from Seneca and was off to Korea. So I wasn't keeping up with sports at that time.

Neither my father nor my uncle played college sports. My father played baseball in highschool. He was too small for football. Uncle Donald might have played football. I think my uncle graduated from Clemson in 1955. Their cousin Graham was a POW in the Korean War.
