How long u been driving?

I got my driver's license the week I turned 14, but legally could not drive after dark until I was 16.
No one cared, Mom would make Pop let me have his snazzy new automatic transmission Impala to pick up Patsy on Saturday night.

How many have driven a car like this? In the day we all did.

Almost 65 years, just one ticket for driving too fast.
I was 17 had a VW that flipped over. I was not driving (in the back seat with Carol) but had to say I was for insurance purposes.
I have been pulled over from time to time, but being a good soul (and a cop), they always let me go.

Started learning to drive at 8 years old by my grandpa 😳 he also started my dad at 8 years old. I was driving down the road by myself at 12 years old in a car he bought me called a Simca or Simka. Not sure of the spelling. I think it was a French car and just fugly. It was a straight drive. Got my 1st trail bike for Xmas when I was 6 years old and got larger ones as I got older. I learned mostly in the mountains near Flat Rock, NC where my grandpa had a mountain property with a jeep and dune buggy.
My first car was a Trans AM when I was 14 years old. Drove it all through high school and 5 years at Clemson. One thing I can say about driving so early is I am not afraid of driving anywhere whereas I see other women who get really nervous on the interstate etc

The 454 was a Chevy engine. Pontiac had a 455, but stopped using them in 1976 due to emissions regulations. The 1977 Y82 SE (so-called "Bandit" edition) Trans Am had a 400 motor. The ones with air conditioning weighed nearly 4000 lbs.
The mid/late 70s was not exactly the high point for American Muscle.

It changed in 1967 in South Carolina. That’s the year I turned 14, so I had to wait another year to get my license. Yet we lived in a rural area so I was allowed to drive at 12, as long as I stayed on the “back roads.”

Learned to drive on a 1959 Chevrolet Apache. The hardest part was using the floor starter when the dang thing knocked off when you were at a stop light on a hill with someone tailgating.

I was driving at 9 or so as all good York County kids did back in the day. Became a legal driver in 1971 at 15. My sister is older and go her license at 14 in 1967.

But used mom’s 1949 DESOTA one weekend at age 15, drove out to a Saluda River cabin outside Charlotte with 3 buddies to shoot off some cherry bombs off the dock while having my very 1st beer, then two, and leaving the wooded property on dirt road I got woolsey, went off the road at 45mph and hit the largest pine tree ever grown, pushed that huge engine back into firewall, knocked me out for a few secs while buddies thought I was dead and started running up the road for help..

Long story short, they came back when I came to & yelled, we walked miles to the main rd, used a phone booth to have a taxi come get us for the remaining 25 miles home by midnight.

And I wasn’t allowed near anything to drive not called a bicycle for ONE Full Year!

Mom got an upgrade to a 1951 Chevy 4-door.

The day I turned fifteen, my dad took me to get a beginners permit. When we got back home, he sold me a 62 corvair for $100. Drove it all through high school. I remember dad telling me the day I bought the car I needed to check the antifreeze. He was laughing his @ss off when I came back in the house and told him there was no motor under the hood. I had no idea that it was an air cooled rear engine car.

Got a permit in SC at age 14 in 1961 at the DMV office on Laurens road. Restricted driving between 6am to 6pm. Took the test in a 1938 Chevy 2 door sedan with a floor mounted 3speed trans and a 48 chevy motor. Drove to jr high in a 1949 Hudson Commodore. The girls definitely weren't impressed. Then the first year in HS drove a 1953 Chevy 4 door with powerglide trans and a 56 Chevy 4 door 3 speed manual. Going home via Cleveland street could get the 53 up to 80 down the hill toward G'ville Tech.

I first rode a Suzuki 185 dirt bike at 11. Let off the clutch, popped my first wheelie into a Lincoln Continental, and took my first flight over a Lincoln's trunk.

Yeah, it was technically a ride and not a drive, but I accomplished "3 firsts" in a single outing on that day.

Started driving a car at 15, the family white Galaxy Ford 500. I really impressed the girls with that ride 😆
