And it was problems like this that got Obama voted in. He promised to change the healthcare system so people didn't have to worry about bankruptcy after getting sick.

In that respect, it was health care.

at a minimum that it should be something reasonable. So what is "reasonable"? I don't know without doing some research. A person should not be saddled with unmanageable debt for years upon years, I know that much. I of course have little understanding of the true economy of it all, but I could at least come to terms with a lofty price tag for a highly volatile, error-prone procedure. Once you start to get above $20,000-ish (?) or so, you are talking major debt for the average American. The system itself needs to be leaned out or the government will have to subsidize it in some way. I mean, I guess it already does through bankruptcy. It's an extraordinarily complicated problem, that's why we need highly skilled experts examining it, examining other systems throughout the world, and making a deliberate, concerted effort to fix it, rather than the politically-motivated charade we have now.

He couldn't afford the treatments he was getting and he had inoperable, Stage 3 cancer so he began selling meth to cover both his expensive treatments and to leave his family money.

working in a car wash after school just to make ends meet, and they had a newborn on the way to boot. He had already resigned himself to the fact he was dying, he just didn't want to die with his family being paupers.
This is silly to stretch this premise to some healthcare hardship story.
also, one of the main themes of the show was Walter's greed....it was greed that got him in the business, for the right reasons, and later kept him in it, for the wrong reasons.

His decision to start selling meth was after his diagnosis

he was resigned to working the car wash as a 2nd job to provide for his family (the more "honorable" path) until his diagnosis. After the diagnosis he knew he couldn't make ends meet let alone provide for his family after his death, so he turned to selling meth.
