Preseason rank important? Yes or No with your reason

We are #14 in the NCAA preseason rankings, which I feel is more than adequate if not possibly to high with our OL and DL questions... What are some thoughts?

polls that are not used by the BCS still help create perception which influences and in part becomes reality.

If we had won the OB we would have made the top 10. Florida St. will be highly ranked when we play and will send us into the top 10 if we come up with the win.

Yes, b/c of voter bias
Aug 8, 2012, 4:44 PM
|
|
Very very rarely do voters even see half the college games each weekend, usually relying on ESPN highlights, assistants or just gut feelings. I don't think that they are accurate or fair, but I do think they end up factoring into people's perceptions, whether its conference strength, strength of schedule, etc. And as we all have come to recognize, in today's colligiate sports world, perception is reality.
For clarification, by "people" I mean coaches, AP voters, and BCS voters.

I agree it deffinately helps getting Clemson's name out there with recruits and possibly getting fans as well... but all that matters is we gota win and keep on winning...

The best players want to play for national title contenders and higly recognizable teams!!! Clemson has reaped many rewards from the exposure, of which not all is good but exposure none the less

Not generally important for clemson

Clemson has almost never lived up to any sort of pre-season ranking. So, unfortunately I'd have to say for Clemson fans, over the years it's been almost a reverse barometer of potential success.

Dont believe anyone can argue with that statement, very well put and you have all the backing needed based on history... I still feel that we are seeing a change in belief, philosophy, and attitude with this team!! Coaches are huge part of a teams success but without the talent it can only go so far and we have PLENTY of talent at skill postions but not so much in the interior lines... Big things coming to Clemson, and soon

my point is proven.. If it can make a determination in where you are ranked at the end of the season, then its of grand importance to be ranked higher at beginning of season!!
I will add that being higher ranked certainly doesnt mean JACK until the whistle blows which is also a valid point. If we lose to Auburn and then to FSU, our season could be over much quicker than any of us like, in terms of title contender is concerned anyway Either way, I am with this team all the way!!!

If there are a couple of teams ahead of us that do not lose then maybe preseason rank would have been important, right?
Just my opinion and a lot depends on how you play and how convincing the win is, strength of schedule and so on but a high preseason rank is not a bad thing

It matters more to Non-AQ teams than BCS league ones but certainly starting out higher helps hold off teams that win behind you. Yea someone said in 2010 Auburn was a great example but both them and Oregon were BCS league teams vs a Non-AQ TCU.
Better example is preseason 2004, Oklahoma, USC and Auburn go unbeaten. Oklahoma and USC start 1 and 2. Auburn starts in the teens. Yet despite being SEC, they never jump the top 2.
So yea, it matters.

They only matter if you're not in a major conference
Aug 8, 2012, 6:56 PM
|

If you're in a BCS-caliber conference, you win your games and you move to the top regardless of where you start the season.
We were far from ranked last year, and after starting 8-0 we jumped into the top 5.
Teams in lesser conferences like the MAC, MWC, WAC, ect. could use the higher starting poll.

As many others have mentioned, it's important in the sense that it kind of gives you a "head start". Last year when we were 8-0, we were ranked behind Stanford despite the fact that we had played and beaten much harder competition. The reason was they had been ranked ahead of us in the preseason and voters don't like to let a team slip in the rankings unless they've been eeking out wins, or if the other team has been playing THAT good.
On top of that, it's incredibly hard for teams to go undefeated. With a loss, a team that was highly-ranked in the preseason will fall fewer spots than a lower-ranked team, even if they lose to a common opponent.

It's important if you're truly a top 5 team. The If three teams start 1, 3, and 5 and end with the same record they'll probably stay in the same order. for us it doesn't matter, we'll probably end around #15.

What else would we have to complain about if not? We would complain that they wait too long or that it started too soon to tell. the main ones hurt are the mid majors that may have a chance. In a normal year, the normal FBS schools that actually schedule good competition will rise in the ranks if they WIN
