Portal vs returning players

I used to believe that players loyal to their school and developing their craft would be the ONLY players I’d want on the team.
I’m starting to think now that the players in the portal are the aggressive, hard hitting players that we need. I hate saying this. I just feel now like the players that stay at Clemson know that they are gonna get some NIL money, have zero chance of losing their position, and have just gotten too complacent. I hope I’m wrong, but this is the most underperforming team I have seen under Dabo yet. Maybe they will turn it around and play lights out the rest of the year, I’m hoping like #### they do, but if they don’t it may be time to start pulling scholarships so they have to actually work to keep their jobs. If they are getting paid then they are employees. In the real world if you don’t do your job, you get replaced. That is a more valuable lesson than even a degree can give you.
Flame away.

Well said. Those of us in the business world quickly realize that if we do not perform, we are fired! Dabo is not teaching these kids real world work habits by guaranteeing all these perks. The men will find out soon enough how it really works when they hit the streets after graduation.

Which is ironic because teaching life skills is supposed to be a core tenet of this program

First of all, until the box that no school wants opened, opens, athletes are just that and not employees. Second, returning players that are good enough to be drafted need to understand that their underperformance will cost them millions in the NFL draft. Somebody needs to drill that thought into Woods, Parker, Terrell and the other high draft picks on our team.

I agree with you there. I remember worrying about Kyle Parker protecting himself after he got drafted into MLB but returned to play QB for one more season. He protected himself the rest of the season after that dirty Nick Fairley hit against Auburn.

it's funny how quickly the narrative changes........

I agree with everything you said, but it's interesting how the narrative has changed here:
in 2021 the narrative was that portal players are nothing but no talent team cancers that couldn't start at their old school
now the cancers are the complacent "home grown" players that are just happy to get a free ride while making some money.
glad some fans are finally waking up to the reality that was obvious 5 years ago.

That’s what my post was about. I’m 40 years old next week, and the way I was raised one would believe that the guys who grind it out would be a better product than guys looking for an easier path to the field. Nothing really makes sense to me in the current time we live in, so it wouldn’t surprise me that somehow the portal players will work harder. I don’t know, anyone’s guess is as good as mine.

I've started to come around too.
This was the year to prove you could go your own way and maybe be pickier with the portal BECAUSE you had the talent and GROWN that talent to where the talent in the portal would not be able to compete....
Well, we're seeing firsthand that it seems like experience is beating our talent despite what we thought we had the advantage in. So far, it does seem like the portal players have more intensity than the homegrown talent. Give me more of those dudes if it means our intensity goes up to where we don't look soft at the line.
That said, if the talent ain't playing up to snuff like we think (see the regression article this morning), the coaching staff absolutely needs to be shaken up this offseason too.

That’s the part that bothers me the most, the lack of intensity. If our players are running as hard as they can, hitting as hard as they can, and we still lose; I can accept it. However, watching a bunch of supposed studs loaf all over the field and play sloppy enough to lose to inferior teams is too big a pill to swallow.

I'm starting to think its not a lack of intensity...

There is no way we can have so many players on both sides of the ball playing with a "don't care" attitude, unless Dabo has completely lost the team.
I'm really starting to think this is who we are. They are running as hard as they can and hitting as hard as they can and the hype of a team full of studs was just click bait.

It’s across the board, NIL has forever changed college athletics. Players will never be the same because they have no true goal or $$$ bag to chase. The only teams we will see in the playoffs in a few years are the top 4 $$ schools such as Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, and Georgia. Not sure there is much Clemson can do but learn to get comfortable being a 7-10 win team.

I’m fine with that as long as they are giving 110%. If they aren’t, they can keep their filthy hands off our rock!

Agree, Cade would be a good start as he is likely the highest paid. Save up the rest of his NIL for a elite transfer QB

My friend until this year, I felt the same way.
It now seems clear to me that to be elite, you have to improve your team each year by bringing in several top notch transfers.
It's not fair to the ones who have been loyal to the program, but it is what it is....

I know. I hate what this has become, but if they stuck around there is a good chance they have been paid. If you haven’t taken a single NIL dollar, then your scholarship should be safe. However if you have taken a single dollar…. Your spot is up for grabs every year.

"Returning starters" is rapidly becoming a negative and not a positive. Pretty soon it will be like wearing last year's shoes on the first day of school. It means you could not afford to bring in upgrades and no one wanted to hire your players away. Both are now signs of a program that is not going to be top 25 competitive.
