Points scored on the defense by quarter.....

2

Oct 24, 2023, 2:29 PM

Not bothering with the CSU game....

Duke- 3, 3, 7 (that QB run), 15 (9 yd and 36 yd run)

FAU- 0,0,0, 14 (2 yd run, 33 yd pass)

FSU- 0,14,3 (another 7 on scoop & score), 0 in 4th..then 7 in OT.

Cuse- 7,0,0,7

Wake- 3,0,3,6

Miami- 7,0,0,10, then 11 in OT

Totals: 20 in first quarter, 17 in 2nd quarter, 13 in 3rd quarter, 52 in 4th quarter, 18 in OT

Note that more points have been given up in 4th quarter than in all 3 other quarters combined.

In Wake, Cuse, and FAU games, we gave up scores after dominating defensive efforts.

In Duke, Miami games....we held up for 3 quarters and then they owned us in the 4th with the running game.

FSU game was an oddball with no fourth quarter scoring.

Soooo....are we dealing with depth issues? Needing scheme adjustments late?

They need the offense to keep them off the field for so long.***

I don't think there's a large enough sample size and I don't see any common caus

Duke - Both TDs came on short fields with drives of 33 and 49 yards after Clemson turnovers.

FAU - It was garbage time of a blowout with backups in

FSU - D played great in the 2nd half

Cuse - Similar to FAU with a late garbage time TD

Miami - Couldn't stop the run and got worn down. Spent the entire 4th Q on the field. Part of the reason they spent the entire 4th Q on the field was their own inability to get a stop, but the offense certainly did nothing to help

The only one of these performances that was alarming was the 4th Q of the Miami game. Sure you wish maybe they could've held Duke to a FG on one of those short fields, but they were certainly put in a tough spot and I can only imagine the emotional state of the team after 3 goal line trips that resulted in a missed FG and 2 fumbles.

I appreciate what you are saying...

The thing about the Duke game (and I would add the FSU and Miami overtimes to this),
is that even though they were short fields, etc., the bottom line is that those
teams started to find the end zone late in the game. And Duke and Miami did it primarily on the ground.
The Wake game has to be considered too....they did nothing all day...until the 4th quarter...made it a one score game with time on the clock.

I'm OK with the garbage time stuff when backups were in (that's a sign of health...used to happen often during the BV days and we would get mad about it skewing the stats of the defense).

And yes...this is certainly on the offense, in many ways.

I think our defense is really good. I think it's better than last year (looking back, we gave up a lot of points last year). Not quite as good as 2 years ago...when the defense literally carried us.

Same thing it has been. Clemson could win every game by 4 or 5 scored if they could just hold onto the ball and milk the clock. Can’t do it though. Offense is abysmal.

Why not stop playing the 3-3-5 with a lead or least blitz off of it?

Dealing with a turnover prone offense that puts the defense in a bad spot too often and goes 3 and out entirely too often. That said the defense has been good. Main coach im wondering about on that side in Lamanski Hall, Parker look like the best DE technically and thats not a good sign imo. Goodwin im hoping is just growing into his role, but lb play is definetly dipping and there is not a lack of talent there. Goodwin as a gameplanner and playcaller i give a solid A so far.
