Somebody explain what "taters" means. I don't get it.

Why is Clemson the "taters"?
I understand the cows -- I guess the Coots think we have a lot of pastures up here or something, but the "taters"?

Tater is coot for Clemson fan, and insinuates redneckedness

For example, there were three other Tim's besides me at work. So the coots distinguished me as "Tater" Tim.
Idiotic, and a ripoff of Ron White if you ask me, but that's my interpretation. Typical coot talk, not original, claiming someone else's "thing" as their own, i.e "SEC National Championships"

I thought that it was b/c Clemson being an Agricultural school. Farmer plant potatoes,, and folks here and around call potatoes a tater. Since Clemson is an AG school they call the fans of Clemson a tater.

which is the common name for the American Marsh Hen. At least our "diss" was a less complimentary version of their precious fighting chicken.
Tater was just the best they could do.
This happened around 1997. Those were good times on the internet message boards.

Thomas G. Clemson was thrown out of a bar in New York City. The fuzz asked if he had an alias and he said that in SC he's known as Thomas "Tater" Clemson. Then he said, "you caught me, you caught the tater".
