Avoiding the Redshirt-Offense

Avoiding the Redshirt-Offense
Clemson has a situational scrimmage this morning, and one of the major storylines will be this amazing freshmen class.

It is no secret that college football coaches are relying on freshmen more and more each year, but this is a big surprise here at Clemson b

Skalski for special teams is a good call.

But Anchrum probably Redshirts unless we have a rash of injuries on the oline.

If Kelly Bryant doesn't nail down the #2 QB spot by ...

the end of the fall, then Zerrick Cooper simply cannot RS.

Cooper will need to get some quality snaps this year as it will have become apparent that Bryant is never going to succeed Watson as the starter in 2017.

So far, the coaches still seem to be hedging on going all-in on Bryant over Schuessler. And no matter how good or bad Schuessler is in his final year, if Bryant can't beat him out, then he will probably be headed for a position change or a transfer and won't be involved in what should be an intense 2017 QB competition.

Most fans are probably really pulling for Kelly Bryant and I'm one of them. I'd love to see him blossom and cement his place as the undisputed back-up QB and be the experienced man-to-beat for starter next season.

But, I also think he's plenty athletic enough to contribute (or even start) at other positions if he can't cut it at QB.

I'd hate to see him transfer because he's buried in the depth chart.

Anchrum and Pollard?***

15-16 will avoid redshirts.

Aug 10, 2016, 11:50 AM

These kids are too talented to sit. They will not stay for 5 years. Plus, last year proved how important special teams are to a successful season from a productivity standpoint and in the ability to rest offensive and defensive starters to keep them fresh for late in games and seasons.

Feaster
Powell
Overton
Pollard
Ancrum
Simpson
Lawrence
Pinckney
Kelly
Skalski
Lamar
Smith
Simmons
Mullens
Wallace

and possibly Zerrick Cooper.

Pinckney definitely redshirted and at least one of the freshmen OL in my opinion.

Odds each play inside

Aug 11, 2016, 7:11 PM [ in reply to 15-16 will avoid redshirts. ]

Feaster 100
Powell 100
Overton slim
Pollard over 50
Ancrum over 50
Simpson TBD (not sold we need inside guys despite the hype)
Lawrence 100
Pinckney 0
Kelly 100
Skalski would have said 0 but TBD based on special teams mentioned by others
Lamar 100
Smith 100
Simmons over 50, not giving 100 because not sold head is ready
Mullens 100
Wallace over 50, only not giving 100 because cautious of short term hype

I think if the freshman is physically ready to play and you do not think they will be there 5 years anyway then you let them play...
I think Tony Steward told the coaches he would only be there 4 years, if that is the case then there was no point in red-shirting.

Like Mac 2 years ago, and Mike last year there is a chance any of them will have an injury red shirt anyway. If they are not physically ready to play, or mentally ready then red-shirt otherwise let them play. There may only be 4 or 5 from last years class that will be with us for 5 years even if they red shirt. The early enrollments mean almost all of the players that were in Spring ball will be physically and mentally ready to play.

We need to play quite a few because of the numbers we will see drafted after the season. Clemson will lose a number of juniors and the staff cannot simply redshirt incoming players who can learn this year in order to compete as potential starters next year.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would play whoever gives the best chance to win and not
