PJ Hall and Will Shipley

I see a lot of similarities in these 2 guys.
Both seem to be very respectful and respectable young men. Both have tried very hard to be leaders on their teams and show a lot of fire and desire on the field/court. I know Shipley had his moments but when you look at his off-field activities with charities and that kind of thing he does seem like a great person.
Both highly recruited out of HS and both have achieved a decent level of success in college. But neither has really become the true superstar that many expected they might and I wonder how much success either will have at the professional level. Because they are Tigers, I will be rooting for both of them to succeed in everything they do.
Both seem to be just a little small or just not quite strong enough to be the very best at their positions. PJ struggles against true big men like Bacot. He just cannot go strong to the hoop and quite often ends up in foul trouble on the defensive end when he is matched up with a true quality big man. He does have a nice hook shot and can make some 3 pointers so he still contributes well even when he cannot be the strong inside threat. Shipley struggles running in the trenches and gets tripped up by arm tackles more than you might expect. But he has developed a pretty good ability to catch the ball and can be very dangerous when he gets in space outside the tackles. Both of them seem to be succeeding more because of their desire and attitude than their size and athleticism. Both seem to be more the “finesse” type player. If they were a little bigger and stronger I think they both could have been true superstars.
Not really sure what made this come to mind while watching the basketball game Tuesday but it did.

GaTech was just my 2nd Clemson MBB game that I've seen this season.

note: I've only watched two halves total this season.
Within minutes of the GaTech game, my thoughts were that this basketball team looked a lot like the football team....
i was also quickly reminded why i only watch NBA.

Not even close! At least we have a defense in football. The basketball team can't stop 3pt shots and let players have career highs every game.

PJ Hall is one of the greatest basketball players Clemson has ever had. He is a potential 1st Team All American, potential ACC Player of the Year, ACC 1st Team Lock. He is a Superstar. There is no comparison between these two. They don't even carry themselves the same way on court/field

PJ was third team all acc last year, you have lost your mind if you are comparing PJ to Ship.

I think you are right Rhett. I love both of these guys and would not trade either of them for anyone else in the country. However, we know that being a start or superstar in college does not always translate to the professional game. I think that is why the commentator the other night talked so glowingly about PJ suggesting that he could have a long professional career ...... but probably not in the NBA. He didn't word it like that, but I think everyone knew what he meant. If any of you have followed the Denver Nuggets, you hardly ever see Hunter Tyson play and in most games he is not even listed on the roster. Playing in the NBA is hard!

Development and workouts or lack thereof over 3-4 years matter. Tyson looks like he will have a solid NBA career.

I hope you are right, but the NBA id drafting players that can help right away or at least contribute on some level. If the Nuggets draft someone better than Hunter, I'm afraid he will have a very short career.

Shipley should be a slot wide receiver. He’s really small and quick. That’s it. He doesn’t have the power Mafah has. Mafah has turned out to be the better of the two. He really worked on hitting the holes this last offseason. He always had the power but now he has it all. Shipley is just fast and really added no power in his legs while he was here. He looks the same as when he got here.

Shipley battled some injuries and did not have as productive of a year this year (our whole offense was worse), but was 1st team all-conference at 3 positions last year, and was 2nd team freshman All-American. Also finished with a 4.0 GPA. He had a great career, yet some Clemson fans don't like him, and downplay his ability and accomplishments.
PJ has probably been Brownell's best basketball player. Not just a raw athlete who needed to develop into a basketball player, but a real, talented basketball player who grew into a man on the court at Clemson. PJ's problem, in my opinion, is he is a tweener. Not big enough to play underneath at the next level, and not mobile enough to play outside (just my opinion). I hope I'm wrong and hope he finds where he fits and thrives.

I agree. Tweeter is probably a good description for both. Just as you described PJ and Shipley being between running back and slot receiver. Both give their all on the field/court and are great Clemson men.

Pretty damclose to the same speed. Now hold on there - before anybody has a stroke, I'm not saying Ship is as good as McCaffery, or has the same skillset. I'm just pointing out that Shipley's size doesn't make him a tweener. With the right team, he could play RB.
