If he is in charge now.....its only natural to expect much better.....because we can't keep doing the exact same thing all the time. Things on how this team looks and is conditioned is going to matter going forward...when going up against elite competition. I'm not saying we got to go get a Costco size box of steroids for each player ...but we got to get the high school look off our running backs and linebackers ...defensive backs....etc..... ......especially after year one.

Why promote someone on the staff that has underachieved as a whole lately?

Unless Love has notably different ideas and approaches than Batson had, it seems like we will likely get more of the same.

Of course, Dabo thinks our S&C has been great, so it makes total sense why he would want that continuity. I just haven’t seen us play tough, physical football in a while. Our tenacity doesn’t seem to match our recruiting rankings. Players don’t seem to improve much from freshmen to seniors.

I realize that all of these issues aren’t solely related to S&C, I just would’ve liked to see Dabo do something different in an effort to improve the program and it doesn’t feel like he did.

Finally, I would be shocked if Love was going to be hired as the Vikings’ director of S&C. Why would an NFL team hire a guy who has never directed anything or spent any significant time in the NFL to direct their entire program?

Coach Swinney for his part doesn't play tough,
physical football ask former DC Kevin ( Finesse) Steele.
Enter DC Brent ( Nut-Cuttin Time ) Venables,
DefLine Elite Coaches Brooks and Hobby with
Venables coaching linebackers, and Reed coaching
secondary best coaching combo to ever coach
defense at Clemson. They were all tough/physical
coaches.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Steele had tough defenses elsewhere

You can credit Saban for the 2008 defense at Alabama if you want, but he also had very good defenses at Auburn after being run out of Clemson. Heck, he fielded a good defense at Clemson in 2010. Our defense stunk under Steele in 2011, but it also stunk under Brent in 2012. I think the biggest issue was a drop off in talent. It took a few years to get it built back up.

But it does not seem that our players, who by all indications are highly ranked as football players and as athletes, appear elite on the field when in a Clemson uniform.

That could be due to coaching, development, confidence, or strength and conditioning - or a combination of these.

For the record, I’m not blaming everything on S&C. I don’t even think it’s a big problem. But I do think it could be better and this promotion doesn’t feel like much of a chance for improvement.

I could careless who he hires, but when he's not winning, media is supposed to question why. No one is supposed to worship idols is my belief. Dabo comes across as wanting a cult and be that idol. Jmho

He may prove to be a great promotion. It just feels like the lazy/easy decision, rather than one which was made after a great deal of research, interviewing, and evaluating.

Again, perhaps Dabo has spent months of intense effort, determining who our next strength and conditioning director should be. I hope he has, and arrived at this decision accordingly. But based on his actions, and what he has said, it feels like he simply pressed the easy button.

It feels like you simply pressed the easy button by creating yet another opportunity to take shots at anything Dabo does without really having any information to support your claims just because it fits your tired narrative. The effort put into the research, interviewing and evaluation for this position was likely done over 2 years ago when Love was hired to come here as the strength coach in waiting. But again, I’m not surprised you aren’t willing to give Dabo credit for having a plan that takes 2 years to develop. That wouldn’t fit your lazy narrative.

I think it's a fair question to ask what role Love has taken that sees the team appearing not as strong or well conditioned as do some of our opponents, but putting down another "hire within" without acknowledging noteworthy not-Clemson experience and the timing of his return is simply criticizing for the sake of criticizing.

I totally agree with you, while not as important as a new OC or DC, just the fact that he went with the easy "continuation hire" and Joey Batson disciple disturbs me a little, its not that Love may not be a very good S&C coach , i hope he is............its more about how its all on the line this time for Dabo.......there will be no more chances or excuses if he fails in the next year or two

and his first move is to play it safe, hire from within the bubble, it doesnt give me alot of hope, if i were him i would be blowing the whole model up as far as coaches and scheme.

Just as many disapprove of the message as the ones that agree with it, but IMHO it speaks the truth about Dabo's habits with replacing coaches within. I'll go as far as saying that he got lucky with the Tony Elliott-Brent Venables OC-DC coaching hires plus their assistance bc it all just seemed to work really well together and that staff won us two national championships while playing in 4 national championship games while staying ranked with a top 10-15 team during the Elliott/Venables time at Clemson, and it seems that it all came unglued with his hires after Tony and Brent moved on to be HC's. After Brent and Tony, his in-house hires have been pretty pisss poor IMHO!!!

My point is that this does not seem a simple as hire within when one looks at his training and non Clemson experience. Looks to me like he was called in to get ready to take over for Batson, maybe Batson want leaving as quickly as it once seemed he would. Love goes out, gets a nice offer just before Batson commits to retiring. It cannot be said he doesn't have coaching experience.

And to be clear, I don't know enough about Love to have formed an opinion but there is justification for the view that goes beyond simple friends and family.

The clowns on this thread, especially the OP, refuse to recognize that this man was hired 2 years ago to be ready to take this position when it came open, which they probably knew was going to be within a couple of years. That would mean that Dabo had a well thought out plan and they just won’t admit that is possible. The “lazy” thing being done here is to call this an internal hire and make it fit their long running narrative.

Man i have not been overly critical of Dabos hiring up front and been cautiously optimistic more often but this hire is missing the mark. S&C has been putrid for this team for probably going on 12 years. Dabo was able to recruit grown and ready to play players to start, the moment the portal and NIL became a thing the lack of physical development reared its head, especially since the 4 stars and 5 stars that were physically ready stopped coming in droves.

The OL has always been weaker and slower, never see kids come to Clemson and leave more explosive, bigger yes, faster and explosive no. Every season the team starts slow and looks out of shape until the end of October(Barrett Carter said he wasnt in football shape after the Duke opener what 3 years ago?).

This is just a massive miss and let down imo.

I am sad to see Joey retire but I guarantee you one thing , he gave Clemson everything he had to strengthen and condition the athletes he was responsible for and he is a great example of a man of Faith, Character and Integrity.

Dabo said it best when he gave you a short summary about Coach Batson. You don’t stay around for 29 years if you do not excel at your job.

God Bless you Joey as you move forward.

Not saying Batson was not good for Clemson but hes been left behind for at least the last decade. It was time for him to move on for the sake of the program and thats simply reality. He did a fine job but its time to catch back up to the modern S&C programs.

As I know very little about S&C, this is one of those times reticence is my best option, thus requiring me to defer to Dabo's judgment. On the outset it seems Coach Love is well-qualified for the role, and my simple-minded thinking is that our team's toughness and ferocity on the field is one of the direct responsibilities of our position coaches. Simply put, perhaps there are too many "Aw shucks" on the sidelines and not enough "Get your heads out of your asssses." I dealt with these very issues in the Army, as did other TNetters, no doubt, and I can assure you that enough of the latter will motivate men to scale mountains bare-knuckled. I believe they may be well-conditioned...their minds just aren't right!

Well they(players) have been on record saying they were not well conditioned. Barrett Carter 3 years ago after Duke gashed the tigers on opening week said he wasnt in football shape. It showed and has shown last year the team was gassed after half vs UGA, this year they looked slow and lethargic vs LSU. What kind of S&C program doesnt have their players ready to go by week 1?

IMO, one of Dabo's biggest problems as our HC is that he will leave the same coaches in place when the team seems to never improve at the positions some of our coaches has been coaching since he has been our HC.

Personally, I believe that a team should show improvement at every position regardless of how good we were at each position the years prior. There is always room for improvement regardless of how good a team is from top to bottom year in and year out it can and should get better...
