Peacetime CEO vs Wartime CEO

Same as presidents and other roles, there is a difference in the way you lead in wartime versus peacetime. Dabo had dreamed a vision of Clemson football and had the fire to lead as a wartime CEO from ‘09 until ‘18. This included tough decisions (firing Napier, Steele, bringing on Morris/BV) and absorbing a lot of criticism and doubt (folks wanted Dabo gone after ‘10). He transitioned into a peacetime CEO gracefully from ‘19 forward. This led to other changes, eg, playing the whole dang roster, pulling guys instead of letting them pad stats, etc. The last couple of seasons, the state of the program has been ambiguous.

Now it is clear. We have transitioned into a wartime period for the program. The look in Dabo’s eyes showed me that he knows now. The ambiguity has been lifted. It is time to shift behaviors and get a bit salty again, reignite that fire, dream the new dream; we need wartime Dabo.

* just for clarity, this is an analogy used in business. In no way am I trying to equivocate the severity of actual wartime or the leadership required in those circumstances. Simply an analogy to express that different circumstances require different leadership tactics *

Nice premise, but Dabo still knows better, you mere mortal. He had rather have total control than share the stage with another Venables type. Riley seems too softspoken to speak up, at least for now. The other 8 are merely untalented yes men.

I just don’t think that Dabo likes losing. He might have pride and want to be around yes-men, etc. but ultimately he wants to win more than anything (IMO). He had still been winning up to this point. Now I think he will sacrifice some of those other features to get back to winning. I hope at least.

Leadership is not static; you have to adapt to your environment and I think that a consensus is forming on our environment (as illustrated below).

Thanks - Dabo just looked different in the postgame. Like the epiphany had set in.

I’d imagine there will be some turnover on the staff. And I’d imagine the portal will be leveraged not just to add talent but also to add experience.

If you feel the need to add a disclaimer at the end of this I just don’t know

Fair enough. It is a common analogy (not that it makes it ok). But is generally acceptable in corporate circles (also doesn’t make it ok). So since there is a chance of it being taken the wrong way, I wanted to make sure I was clear in my intention.
