Path to a regular season title

Another great win last night, it was one of those games you didn't want to end because it was so entertaining.

As a fan of all Clemson sports I want as many titles as possible. I began thinking of how we can gain our first ACC regular season title under Brad and get him that elusive first trophy. The ACC is down big time from where it once was, especially when he first took over. We need to strike while the iron is hot.

We are still 1 game behind Duke (#### GT loss!) with a handful of games left. So whats the path to back-dooring our way into a regular season title?

Looking at both team's schedule, we need to win out. Full stop. I don't think anyone here sees Duke losing 2 more.

Below is our schedules remaining and ESPN win probability.
Clemson
02/15 @Florida State 71% to win
02/22 @SMU 55% to win
02/26 Notre Dame 88% to win
03/01 @Virginia 78% to win
03/05 @Boston College 90% to win
03/08 Virginia Tech 94% to win

Duke
02/12 Cal 90% to win
02/15 Stanford 97% to win
02/17 @Virginia 93% to win
02/25 @Miami 95% to win
03/01 Florida State 97% to win
03/03 Wake 95% to win
03/08 UNC 78% to win

Just looking at the win probability its clear to see a) its a bit of a long shot b) UNC is the most likely based on that win %. Thinking outside the box, I think UVA might be the gotcha game, mostly just a gut feeling. It will be their 6th game in 16 days, and the game before their toughest remaining game overall in Illinois. If they can use a deliberate slow pace of play to keep Duke out of rhythm as much as possible I think they give themselves to pull off the upset.

Starting tomorrow I will be a fan of Cal, Stanford, UVA, Miami, FSU, Wake and UNC on those days!

Curious as to others thoughts...

4 of last 6 on the road for us is tough compared to Dukes 5 of last 7 at home.

I'd love to win both, but would prefer the ACCT title than the regular season.

Very true MFO. I segmented those in my head because I think we will be a threat in the ACCT no matter what, we control our own path there. With the regular season we do not.

What about Looservile? They have the head to head win against us.

4 home games and 3 on the road. They will be favored in each game.

The ACC still does not officially recognize a regular season champion...

in men's hoops so there is no trophy presented for that. The team that finishes in first place during the regular season is awarded the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and receives a double bye into the quarter finals.

Youre right, I meant the proverbial trophy case. Good call out on that :)

Yes, truthfully the ACC regular season champion was something Dean Smith/UNC

fans started recognizing in the 80s when UNC would have the best conference record but not win the ACCT...I didn't even know it was a thing until we had a chance to win it in 90

We will probably lose 1-2 more ACC games.

It is really hard to win every game, even in the “lowly” ACC.

So you are saying that our men's BBall team has zero shot at the regular season title?

No, that is not what I am saying at all.

We certainly have a shot. I just don’t think it is likely.

Over a 20-game conference season, it is very rare for a team to lose less than 3-4 conference games.

We started 10-2. It is unlikely for us to win 8 in a row to finish the season. There are some good teams on our schedule. We can certainly do it, but the odds aren’t in our favor.

I’ve just watched enough college basketball to know that there will be games where one team gets hot and the other has a bad night.

At FSU and at SMU will both be tough.

We are a lot better than VT and BC but as we saw with GT, anyone can sneak up on you and win.

Pi$$ing away the GT game really hurt Clemson's chances.

Duke is a heavy favorite to win the remainder of its games while Clemson...well...isn't.

A Duke loss isn't enough. That would create a 3-team tie, and we don't have the H2H over Louisville.

Also, what is this "back door" nonsense. If we win the title, we win it fair and square. We aren't backing into it.

Well we dont control our own destiny in this ACC regular season title and we have played those in contention with us. We are 1-1. Since we don't control our own destiny after playing them, the term back door is seemingly applicable because we need help

I honestly don't care what door the title comes through. I would be fun to have the first one in 35yrs.

If we win the ACC, it will be because we earned it.

This “backed our way into it” nonsense is stupid, just like it was when people said we backed our way into the ACCCG or the playoffs. It was earned.

Yeah but unfortunately its a term with a generally accepted definition that has been coined and long used in the sports world.

There is no path to a regular season title until Duke loses and oh by the way, Louisville needs to lose too. The big deal would be winning ACC Tournament because that would be history with a capital H.

Clemson was the regular season ACC basketball champion on one occasion, and I believe it was in the 1989-1990 season. It was a team that had both Elden Campbell and Dale Davis (the Twin Towers). What we have not won is the ACC Tournament, which is no longer so important with 68 teams qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.

Basically win out & hope Duke stubs their toe 1 more time

To force a RS co-championship.

I think our next 2 game stretch has more desperation than what Dukr has left. FSU would probably love to get Hamilton a W on the way out & try and make a late charge for him. SMU is a bubble team lacking a Q1 win & desperately needs 1.

While Duke has potential pitfalls against teams hoping to get on right side of bubble (Stanford, UNC) or to improve their stock (Wake), I just don't see anyone replicating what we did last Saturday.
