Parents of college students, when did you start taking campus visits?

My son is a junior this year, and has finally decided what he wants to do after HS (For now at least).
He's a bright kid, but doesn't have the best GPA bc he's lazy af at school. He finally seems like he's turned the page this semester, but i'm worried it's too late.
His mother and I have no issues, and are in fact encouraging him, to do a bridge program or a tech school to knock out the Gen Ed kind of classes. But he still wants to look at some schools, including Clemson, to learn more about the campus itself. We're fine with all that, but when is the best time to start doing those tours? Spring of junior year? Summer?

Yes to both. Spring and Summer. We did with both of ours. Even waited until summer before senior year. Both of ours went to the community college and transferred in to other schools. Before they start taking classes, make sure what they are taking transfers to a broad range of schools. I realize it will be mostly gen ed stuff. But some places will have something like an engineering tract to follow. The engineering program they are transferring into probably won't have any of that. Stick to the math and english. Some of the sciences may not even transfer depending on the school and the degree.
All this is geared to the "lazy AF" student or those that aren't quite sure their direction of study. It's a helluva lot cheaper way of finding out.

college and probably will do some visits this summer that coincide with sports camps she wants to do.
She thinks I'm "extra" which I probably am but I don't think it's too early to start working towards getting her where she wants to go.

of her own decisions (for example based on her academic performance her geometry teacher wants her to take the PSAT for this year). Her argument was none of her friends were doing it and that it doesn't count. I spoke with her teacher and she 100 percent thinks daughter of is one of the students who will benefit from it.
I encouraged her to do it because it gives her practice for when it counts and a baseline of how she does on standardized tests... but she still didn't WANT to do it. So I tried to lead her to the correct decision and she didn't get there on her own... so I kinda forced her hand. This kid gets A+ in all subjects without really having to try, so with a little effort the sky is the limit.
Niece of didn't take any practice PSAT tests and didn't qualify for National Merit Finalist despite getting a 1550 on her SATs eventually. (currently a junior in Clemson Honors/chem engineering)

Maintain his new found motivation
For Clemson he has about 7-8 months left until applications are due so get on it!
I second the plan to get gen ed out of the way as inexpensively as possible
They don’t put an asterisk on your diploma if you transfer in.

My daughter started Junior year. Clemson had a Thursday night game vs GT. We toured UGA on the way to the game...our group had about 20 people in it. There were 3 families on their way to the Clemson game.
She also toured Auburn a couple weeks later.
She received early acceptance to UGA around Christmas and that was the end of it.

If you didn't conceive him on a college campus it's too late.

his mom and I got busted on a gameday Saturday two years after we graduated, christening some professor's office in Brackett Hall. True story.
He was kinda pissed, I was like, "shouldn't have left the door unlocked" as we made our escape.

nailed it down to a few places that would do his double major. The music conservatories got thrown out, so that saved us some travel in the NE.
Started with the youngest sophomore year. His sitch was weird though, he got Covid, which turned into long Covid, then he got mono. School effed up his transcript, so we removed him from school and he finished online and beefed up his ACT. He’s still deciding what he wants to do.

Pro tip: Don't wait too late to apply,, and as I recall, if he/she has a highly preferred choice with the grades, go for early acceptance. Will save you a lot of headaches later.

Clemson campus was Move-in day. I applied to Clemson via my high school guidance counselor, the only school I applied to, got accepted, and then moved in. Parents went with for Move-in day, and walked around campus before saying goodbye and driving on up to the mountains for a couple of days. It was a much simpler time.
