One of the life skills that you're never taught is learning how to smile and say "It's ok honey" when your 16 year old daughter is bawling after pulling in the garage before the door is all the way up and destroying the @#$%@#$ out of two of the four panels with the roof rack on her car. That was my evening.

The reality is she actually likes to hang out w me still, watch shows, go for bike rides etc. the boys just care about video games and girls (the older one).
I don’t have a favorite but I prob spend more time w daughter bc she actually asks to spend the time w me.

We only had a two car garage so neither son ever pulled in

with their car. But MIL was staying at our house once and called and said the garage door would not shut.
We get home and she had hit the wall, damaging not only the track the door was on, the sensor but also the brick facade at the bottom. Yea, I can see why it would not shut.
She denied hitting anything of course.

I probably could have sorted out the door being jammed against the car (zero car damage, whew) and taking the door apart, but one of the cables snapped and one was still intact, so I don't eff with Torsion springs. $350 to have the guy come out last night and basically help me sort the thing out to where I can manually raise it and lower it by hand.
Supposed to come out Friday and give me quotes on the two panels but lead times suuuuuuck right now. I actually went skraight FBC and found an entire door on CL that was really nice (can only assume they replaced it with juana them fancy new wood ones) for $250, which is hella cheap.....tempting.

My neighbors, well, the wife rules that house with an iron fist and not too long ago, she ripped the roof off their brand new golf cart by backing out when the garage door wasn't all the way up. He was also very gentle with her but I think for other reasons.
The rest of us on the street were not so gentle.

cart straight through the shed doors trying to park it, and it was my fault for not leaving the doors open. My other sister intentionally rear ended golf cart driving sister in her pristine 2001 BMW 330Ci because they were in a fight. I took that one a little more personally than I should have, frankly I'm still mad at her about it. That car was beautiful.

into Mom-Ofs parents garage, which was underneath the house. It was a 2-car garage and had one of those pillars in between the bays, supporting the house above. He clipped/removed the pillar. House did not collapse.
Not sure what how Grandad reacted to that, but boy howdy.

car into park and it rolled into my parent's garage door. As you said, she got consolation. If I had done that it would have been the apocalypse.
My MIL also backed into her garage door because she didn't realize it was still raising.
I'm noticing a trend in these stories.

A - will only have to repair it once. B - constant reminder for her to be careful. C - if you ever think she's going to ask for something you don't want to do...just go in front of your house and stare at the garage door. She'll leave you alone.

Parenting.net _ here’s a different approach that worked …
Oct 20, 2022, 10:30 AM

|
to some extent when raising kids … or at least kept them off guard.
Get POed and mad when they do little dumb things. When they do big dumb things be cool and comforting. In the first case they may not know or really care because the consequences are small. Unloading on them is somewhat preventative. When big dumb happens, kids can see and understand the consequences. Little use in pounding that message in.
Plus it confuses the Mom.

my wife crinkled in 2004 when she put it down while I had the tailgate open on my Jeep Grand Cherokee.
It wa only about $700 for a new door, and $1500 in paint and bodywork to the Jeep.
Much like anything else, somehow it was my fault. She got mad and shut the door out of spite because I was outside drinking beer with my neighbor.

Husband of took one last stupid business trip when I was about to pop and shore enough it was time to go. My mom was with me but too nervous to drive me... sooooo yes, we blamed him.
Not a scratch on the RR, but total loss on the garage door.
