Available Baseball Coaches??

May 31, 2022, 3:57 PM

I never thought Monte would be let go ( I agree with the decision) so I never really looked at realistic options to replace him. What is the view from you guys on potential candidates? Before anyone says it.. No... Tim Corbin and Kevin O'Sullivan are not realistic options.

Michigan coach or godwin at ecu.

Panda got EZU on the BB map

May 31, 2022, 4:31 PM

Randy Mazey should probably be near the top of a realistic list by Neff.

Amen!

There’s no way Godwin is leaving ECU.

Jack was fired for a reason.. We don't want him back. New Coach and a new beginning is what we need in my opinion.

I’m not a fan of the decision to part with Leggett, but that boat has sailed. He’s 68 years old. He needs to enjoy his retirement.

Too many think Landon Powell may be considered.

May 31, 2022, 4:03 PM

Not necessarily on this board, but gossip in Greenville. He has done well at North Greenville.

But, do we really want someone with those ties to UofSC leading our baseball team?

I vote, 'Nay'

He would be a great choice (alma mater aside) but he is waiting on the UofSC job (shouldn’t be a long wait)

Agreed. Surprised that Kingston was retained.

Landon powell is a terrific coach and will succeed anywhere he is. Brett Harker would be a great candidate imo

Why not dip into the minors? Heck, there's a guy right down the road that's been scouting and coaching in the minors for a long time. I'd think he'd know talent and development as much as anyone on the short list. Wonder if he'd be interested in getting an interview? His daughter attends CU. His name is Travis Barbary and he's the current Manager of the OKC Dodgers.

Matt LeCroy would be the first call I made, but I am not sure he would be interested since he may be in line to be the Nationals' next skipper.

Re: Available Baseball Coaches??

Matt Lecroy was offered the last time but doesn’t have his degree and president vetoed it. Monte was the 4th choice. So if Matt Lecroy got his degree now he would be a choice

I rember watching Travis play Easley Legion Ball when I was younger. He took after his grandfather, Red, who was a heck of a ballplayer back in the day.

I like the way you're thinking. Jeff would be an exciting coach in Clemson. He might really enjoy Clemson. I believe he was a two sport recruit committed to Clemson before choosing to skip college and go pro. Would love to have him on campus in a Clemson uniform. And bring Brian McCann with Jeff.

Give Francour a try. Maybe he could convince Leo Mazzone to drive down from Lake Keowee and spend a couple years straightening out the pitching staff while grooming the future pitching coach.

Why so many folks recommending David Miller? I get that he’s a great former player, but the head coaching experience is slim and not exactly stellar. He had that final LaSalle team playing with motivation but he landed at D3 baseball afterwards. Does Clemson really need to go in that direction? Just trying to see what others are seeing about him.

Re: Available Baseball Coaches??

May 31, 2022, 10:55 PM [ in reply to Re: Available Baseball Coaches?? ]

Miller, took a team that was voted 2nd worst in D1. Had 3 nationally ranked classes in his three years with a school that had no facilities, resources or money. His team was in place and won. Then heard he wanted a year off after getting screwed over but took a d3 cuz his dad went there. Had there best season ever and now has 1st ever golden spikes finalist on his team.

Coach Miller develops players and gets players to play in worst circumstances. Not only an all American here but learned under leggett, Wilhelm, Corbin, Schlossnagle and Mazey. It’s not about experience but about his attitude, ability to develop and made most out of horrible circumstances.

He is everything clemson is about. I have been following his career since 1993. You wanted my opinion there it is. I would guess he also has the support of many big alumni and know for a fact he would rally the fan base. I believe he took an 8 win team to over 30 wins. Every coach I know has said he is very very good. He is What we need and is a Clemson guy.

Re: Available Baseball Coaches??

May 31, 2022, 11:08 PM

Last thing about Miller I know for a fact he turned down multiple D1 and D2 offers last year as well as assistant jobs. He didn’t get stuck with a D3 job. He chose the job and they broke every D3 record almost in the book on offense. Great coaches are not always easy to find. And great coaches love to coach. Doesn’t matter if it’s Clemson, high school, or Minor league ball bc or D3. Easy to probably go get someone with better credentials on paper and make the splash hire. Doesn’t make it the right hire. Leggett was a Western Carolina HC and became a legend here. Miller will most likely do the same. If he isn’t Neff’s choice that’s on Neff and 8 want the best for Clemson but I would find a way to bring him in no matter what. Even ask him to be an assistant if they don’t think he has the resume yet. He for sure bleeds Clemson orange.

OldTiger88 - I'm sure Coach Miller is a great person and great coach, but that isn't the direction the Tigers are going. You clearly know him and are a fan of his, but you might as well save your energy. He isn't going to even be a blip on this coaching search.
