Padded helmets?

Mar 5, 2018, 9:20 PM

We’re seeing players with padded helmets ( on the outside) more and more frequently during practice. I presume these reduce chance of concussion during practice. If so, why not wear them in games, other than they are kinda funny looking?

Safety first, unless it screws with aerodynamics.***

To be honest, I think this is where we are headed

and that is probably a good thing.

I think the technology of the helmet could keep football from getting over-run by fears of the concussion.

Keeps the chrome (see in spring game) from getting scratched

There was a 60 minutes sports a year or two ago that featured clemson and the padded cover they wear on the outside of the helmets during practice. They're advertised to reduce risk of concussions and head trauma but not all experts agree which is why you do not see them everywhere. Some say that the padding "sticks" on impact instead of sliding off (think of Vaseline on a boxers face) so the hit is more direct and negates any benefit of extra padding.

I agree. It appears it would make neck more susceptible to injury.

That may or may not be an answer but I think a new generation helmet should be the goal that has ways of absorbing energy without transferring it to the head. Maybe helmets that are slightly larger that have sections that crack/break/collapse? If it happened to you, you just run over and get a new helmet.
No idea if that would work, but that should be the thinking.. lets make a safer helmet.. dang it! :)
