Tossing legacy CD/DVD RW drive, and legacy twin 20TB NAS drives with an extra 5TB drive, so same storage beyond the 2TB (Backup purposes). So that's 3, 3.5" drive bays used plus one 5" for the DVD-RW.

Cool side note, oldest son gave me some input into this one. He built his PC two years ago from scratch with summer job money. Probably saved me $500, and also recommended some really nice stuff that's just under top of the line performance (maybe 5%), but 50% cheaper than top of the line. First AMD build. He understands if something doesn't work/doesn't fit/incompatible, he will have his fingernails pulled off one by one with needle nosed pilers
jk - I've checked behind him.

and like $460. Depends. Overall probably 50% faster, but in some gaming metrics it's FAR superior. And, LESS than half the price.

Also ripped my wedding off a DVD to put on the NAS.
Takes some computing HP to reencode DVD to 4K, etc.
And in my genealogy software, it takes some horse power to tell me 321 ways my wife and I are related. 12th cousins are the closest we get.

By the way, awesome specs an very complimentary to each other!
I'll just run the highlight reals Amd this one is about 3 yrs old Case - never cared for them but got one! Aorus master b550 5950x 16 core 16 thread 64gb trident 3600 4080 super WD 1tb and sn850 m.2 nvme in raid (both running off the chipset so my gpu doesn't share lanes Cooler master 1000 Noctua dh-15 with 2 fans ( keeps cpu under 70c running prime 95 torture testing) ur right, air coolers are still very nice!
Newer build Intel Intel ultra 9 285k 24 core 24 thread sitting on a 5.7ghz boost that runs about 45c with the ai extreme hitting 6.2ghz while torturing all cores. Really love the power cores and efficiency cores working like they do! Corsair vengeance rgb 128gb pc5 6400mhz hitting 32-40-40-104 @ 1.35v (xmp2 enabled to hit 7200m/t with about same voltage and latency) Msi z890 1851 socket a series wifi 7 but I go Lan Run some m2 5.0s in raid 1. Something I shouldn't have or do. I boot off of a wd m2 1tb for my windows. Gpu running Intel integrated on 1 monitor for efficiency status with #2 npu in running in sync with efficiency status. Gpu #3 5080 msi gaming oc (best I can do!) Thermaltake 1250 gen 5 with 5.0 dedicated 16pin for graphics. Really great psu. Surprised me. My peripherals are 4k lg ultra, gamepad ASTRO, regular wireless board and mouse. Hard of hearing so I have no audio hooked up. I use Bluetooth headphones and optical spdif for dif devices. I do have a water cooler on the Intel but it's just an h100i. Nothing fancy.
I guess that's about it. I can play assassin's creed shadows at 4k with everything maxed out including hair strands of every character lmao and they include fog as a high setting (weird) but I get avg 150fps with everything maxed. It goes from 145 to over 200 in this game. Userbenchmarks puts everything at 99 percentile stick speeds except with xmp1 enabled and no raid devices. This is the Intel system. When I play games like overwatch 2, call of duty, etc... my fps will max at 1000 and stop in certain sceneios but never drops below 350.
The amd setup runs assassin's creed at 130fps and similar to Intel in other games. I don't see much dif with 4.0 to 5.0 gpus right now but the cpus don't bottleneck the gpus and other way around.
I guess that it.

Bout to say, you will need water cooler on that Intel.

I just refuse to go water cooling. Could. In fact, my current Intel CPU is one of the hottest running CPU's they've made. You literally CAN NOT overclock it. EVEN with water, you can't overclock it. I think someone tried with liquid nitrogen or something once, and got it to run stable for 30 seconds or so overclocked to what would ne a normal "high" overclock. Probably faster for those 30 seconds than anything today.
Went with AMD this time because they're cheaper, have as many cores, run cooler, and just can't beat the price. Intel and AMD are fighting it out, and both are relatively close on top speeds, BUT......AMD is racing Intel from a standpoint of 50% cheaper, so there's that.
I really miss ASUS though. Used to be my goto for motherboards, and for routers. Their routers are the best IMHO simply because they allow YOU TO CONTROL THE ROUTER, COMPLETELY. But the ASUS quality has gone to crap, and their routers are lagging in the tech now. So I have an EERO and I'm stuck connecting at whatever speed Jeff Bezos says I should connect at. QOS is completely done where you have no control. REALLY miss the ASUS routers.

Ur right about the 10 and 11 series intels. They run hot but my 5950x runs 32c idle and my 265k and 285k run 23 and 25c on the same dh-15. I'd give the hot cpu award to to to the ryzen 9 series and intel 13 and 14. But for performance the ultra has a thermal limit at 105c and 9800x3d thermal is 95c. ultra maxes under 65c in extreme oc with the same dh-15 that 5950x maxes at 85c. Still under thermal bottleneck. 9800x3d has thermal at 95c which is on par with pretty much all zen 4 and 5 architecture. And yes 14 gen intel is hard to oc. Cinebench (r23) bench pics attached running same systems but with amd and intel cpus There are only a handful of unbiased benches left. The saturation of buying ads has leaked into some of the most dedicated hardware sites. Tech up, Tom's, pc builder, userbenchmark (even though they swear they don't pay to play), every video online... has destroyed knowing without seeing in person. We have free sync, g sync, v sync, resizeable bars, auto tunes, v cache and so many gimmicks to trick reputable programs like fraps into showing a higher frame rate that makes no sense because we would need a 10000mhz with .000000000001ms latency monitor to not have seizures at 1000 plus fps. Which is literally what my fps generally shows in most AAA titles. I left the screen feeling sick like I was in a VR headset for 2 days the other night and only played for 45 minutes. But for everyone's enjoyment I have a realistic benchmark of the higher cpus out now.
And ur right about asus and the rog lineup. Absolute beast of hardware and very stable for DIY ocing. Clean and easy to read bios, they actually make sure they have decent drivers before launch instead of letting the first round customers be a beta class and support us 2nd to msi imho.
Enjoy the attached picture

FYI on your motherboard!!! Don't use the m2_2 slot. Gpu will run half speed***
1

|
M2_2 slot share PCIe 5.0 x4 bandwidth. Both run at PCIe 5.0 x2 when a device is installed in the M2_2 slot
Use the m2_1 or m2_3 slots for your ssd nvme m2. Using the m2_2 slot will not only put your awesome graphics card in half speed but will put the m2 ssd at half speed too. If I'm not mistaken it will also cut ur usb-c ports at half speed as well. So that one ### m2 slot will take ur card from x16 to x8 and m2 from 14ghzish to 8ghzish and the usb-c from 40gbs to 20gbs. I know this sounds like blazing speeds even at half speeds but make sure u get what u paid for. I have an aorus gaming board that did this woth m2_1 and sure enough I was running both half speed. And don't worry about running ur ssd off ur chipset because u will recover that speed thru the integrations. Happy building! For ur os if u are doing windows 11 pro 64 then holler at me because I can show u where to get legit genuine keys for under 10 bucks. They are corporate sold keys but they are lifetime genuine and I'd be happy to walk u or anyone thru how to create a free usb iso file of windows to install on new builds or if anyone wants to upgrade to 11 or 11 pro the price is still the same. In fact I have a key I accidentally purchased some tiger fan who needs it can have it!
And anyjuan that wants a mean machine. I have a monster of a pc for a steal of a price. I'll even cone case outbur house.... cough, cough... come set it up and get u going!

The USB-4 controller shares PCIE lanes with the M.2_2 slot. M.2_1 slot, AND the GPU all have 16 lanes @ pcie-5. So since only using 1 M.2, if I put that in the top slot, and the GPU in, I can keep the full 40gb/sec USB-4 port at full speed.
Got the 2TB m.2 for the OS and some storage, but have some massive 3.5" NAS disks to populate my real storage drive, over 25TB.

The issue he's talking about where you won't get full pcie lanes is if you use more than 1x m.2 pcie-5 stick. If I put a second in, then the issue he mentioned will happen. STILL, you can mitigate it by shutting off the USB-4 controller in the bios and still give your GPU and up to TWO M.2 PCIE-5 sticks full bandwidth.
Best part, I'm getting a PCIE-4 GPU. It's not the fastest, but for the price it's the best deal for your buck, today. But I can always upgrade the GPU later, if I win the lottery, or Trump's tariffs and trade wars drop the price massively, which I am sure will happen very soon.

Never purchased a PC. Built every one since college.

Never had a problem. They last for at least 8-10 years. They're mostly future proof, so they last 8-10 years working decent. Never had to take one to get fixed. No Geek Squad rummaging through my files. ONLY hardware failure (to date) is one HDD, and one PSU.
Now I have bought a laptop (fixed it three times then chunked it). On second now in 5 years. Bought mom 3 PC's now, each lasting 3-4 years.
But me, and the kids, we're all equipped by me. Costs about 1/3 more, but they last 2-3x longer.

Apple generally has excellent quality so that makes sense.
Always neat to crack open a pre-built/mfg computer and see the corners they cut, and how they design things. Like mom's Dell she once had. The front panel USB sockets were mounted using some cheap crap plastic junk. I knew that would fail. One day she plugged in a USB device and CRACK, broke. I had a spare USB hub I gave her to use on the rear panel, which is hard to reach but the hub can sit on her desk, so she was still happy.

Ur right that if u pull out tye usbc 40gbs ports then the m2 won't suffer but I'm dead in about that slot my friend. I'm sure. U labeled ur board correctly. I actually copy and pasted the major part off ur mb manual so my fat thumbs won't mess with what's typed. Ur good though. U won't notice it at all unless ur rendering and editing uwd 8k stuff. The manual might be wrong. Or u might have ur m2 in a dif slot. Idk. I submit to ur knowledge if ur awesome pc. That 9800xsd is a killer in 1440p! My stupid little 285k only beats the 9800x3d by a meager 14% in 4k gaming. Like I care about that!

These things are passed down through the generations.
My mom used the third one for many years. The last two pictured are running fine today. 2010 build is a little slow on some newer games, but they work fine.
Other reason is I was planning this year to build a new one, around Christmas, but our Dear Leader's unpredictability has led me to jump the gun 6-8 months. Prices are still normal now because 1) the ports screwed up and didn't start charging the tariffs, 2) Trump had everything tariffed from China (many PC parts) but then 3) Made an exception for computer parts, only to 4) Say the exception is temporary and they will be returning eventually.
In light of this dumbassery, I just went ahead bit the bullet.
Probably good for a good 6+ years on electronics now. Only other critical need is a printer. Mine is built in the US though.....CRAP, Canada, oh well, I have a backup printer so we're good there.
