Opinions please concerning watching sports on TV

I want to get rid of cable. However, I will not consider UVerse/Dish/DirecTV since they all screw you over after the first year.
What alternatives are you using? I've consider Sling, but don't know true customer experience. Also, I do want to catch other channels as well.
Thanks!

I have not had cable for over 3 years .

I found it a not so important expense .
I just use over the air channels with a good indoor antena that I have up in the attic. I get over 50 channels (some even in english) so I am never at a loss for entertainment.
Clemson football and a few other sporting events are lost but heck, there is always streaming on the net (not to mention an excuse to go to the local bar) . I also have Netflix for $9 a month and that covers most anything I want not sports related .
Plus Cable is bad, makes one a couch potato . I find myself doing more, active things without it.
Most big events are still available on the big networks ( World series, Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby, Ncaa finals, Daytonna and Dega ....etc.)
Love the savings.

I changed to Sling TV, HULU, Amazon Prime plus OTA signal....
So far I have enjoyed Sling TV. We use it through Amazon Fire TV Stick and Xbox One. The Xbox One app has a few issues but the Fire TV stick is pretty #### good.

If you like the chromecast then the Amazon Fire Stick might not be a bad purchase for you...
IMO it is very similar to chromecast except easier to use as a dedicated device.
Also be warned with Sling TV you can only view on one device at a time. So if your family uses multiple TVs a good bit then it mgiht not be the service for you.

it's amazing how much more stuff you can get done when you don't have cable.
I used project free tv and viooz for shows/movies, and vipbox .tv for sports events, or went to a sports bar

I agree, I've been without for over a year now and don't miss it a bit. The first couple weeks were rough but I honestly can't really remember what it's like having it. We got Netflix and basic cable and it's more than what we need. As of now I don't ever plan on getting directv or charter ever again.

Borrow a friend/family member's Comcast login. You'd be amazed at how quickly people give these things out if you just say you need to watch an out-of-market Clemson game.
Also, that way you can still take from Comcast (HD/bandwidth) without giving them anything back. Consider it getting your money back after being reamed for years.

Roku with Sling TV is the way to go
Apr 27, 2015, 2:13 PM

As long as you have high speed internet then you will have no issues.
My wife and I cut the cord a little over a month ago and I have not missed it at all. We have ATT U-verse which we kept for the local channels only ($19.99/mo) and use the Roku for everything else.
Sling TV is $20/mo with no contract. It includes ESPN and ESPN2 along with a good many other channels. Also, the watch ESPN app is free on Roku and you can watch all ESPN3 games on there for free. If you want to watch ESPN U, SEC Network, or ESPN News then you can buy an extra sports pack from Sling TV for $5 per month.
Also, Sling TV had a deal going (I think it still is) that if you prepay for 3 months of their service ($60) they will send you a free Roku ($50.)
The only downfall is only one TV can be logged into Sling TV at a time. You cannot watch ESPN in the living room while your wife watches HGTV in the bed room unless you purchase 2 accounts.

I've had Sling since February and use it on a Roku 3 and an Amazon Fire TV. I would give it a B- rating so far. The price is great and I love having live ESPN without going through rip-off cable and satellite companies. No contract too.
The downside is it has been glitchy of late. I get random errors. Last week certain channels were not available. Customer Support was nice enough, but it took them three days to figure it out. Also, during the Wisconsin - Kentucky Final Four game on TBS, the system kept crashing bc Sling had not anticipated so many viewers. They say they have that fixed now, but come January when I'm watching Clemson in the CFP on ESPN, I'm going to go to a friend's house with cable just to be safe.

One way or another you gotta pay the man.
Apr 27, 2015, 3:09 PM

Two basic options here.
1. Pick one provider and stick with it. You're probably going to pay a little more once the introductory offers are done, but if you have a good signal and the channels you want, then you're done.
2. Jump around from offer to offer, or with a mishmash of providers, or both. You might be able to cobble something together to save a few bucks, but you might have a bunch of remotes and/or have to change your inputs and/or have to deal with getting it all to work. And it'll change.
As I said above, one way or another you gotta pay the man.

Well I for one am paying the "man" about 75 bucks a month less now than what I was 2 months ago. That is with no special offers or anything.
