To those that like to disparage OP and praise Brownell...

Jan 5, 2013, 6:28 PM

did you see the stat that we were fourth in the conference (a surprising stat to say the least) in conference wins the past 8 years (6 of those seasons under OP)? Do you guys honestly think we will be fourth in conference wins in the next 8 years?

Who disparages OP as a coach? He won a bunch of games and

Jan 5, 2013, 6:32 PM

took Clemson to the ACC Championship game, and made Clemson a program that went to the tourney every year.

People disparage OP for bolting in the middle of the night, not for his coaching, at least I don't think. I wouldn't trust the opinion of anyone who thinks OP was a bad coach.

basketball program and you will see there are a number of them. The fall back is that he never won an NCAA tournament game. Maybe not, but he did things that hadn't been done here in a long, long time and sometimes ever. And, at least we were fun to watch.

We will be fun to watch again in 1 to 2 years.***

but I'm not sure that is BB's style. I think he prefers this slow-it-down, defense first, half court approach, which is fine if you have great players. But if you don't, you'd better find another way, or at the very least, entertain the fans/alums.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell's teams rarely, if ever, get blown out.

Jan 5, 2013, 6:42 PM

when they do, it's shocking and the outlier to his overall trend.

The thing with Brownell's system is he doesn't need great players to win. He keeps the score close so that if you hit a couple of shots here and force them to miss a couple then you will win. We already play one of the better defenses in the league, but we don't have the consistent shooting to win consistently right now. The odds are very high that in the next 2 years, that will be different. The focus then will be our inside play, but that's a whole other thing.

It's funny, OP's system also didn't need great players and was defense first (in fact it was pretty much ONLY defense). The lack of half-court offense ability was a huge problem when tournament play came around. That's why Brownell should elevate the program past where OP had it. He has better defense and offensive systems. He doesn't have the players yet to really make his system hum, but they are coming. OP had worse records than Brownell in his first 5 years as coach, so I say let's just give Brownell time. It worked before with OP.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like I said, I really hope you're right...

Jan 5, 2013, 6:45 PM

and if so, I will be the first to admit I was wrong. I just don't see it.

Exactly. No idea what the OP is talking about.

The one fault of OP's teams were in tournament play. OP's teams were made to win in the regular season, Brownell's teams are being made to win in both regular season and tournaments.

He not only bolted in the middle of the night, he obviously was shopping for a job because he had absolutely nothing recruited for the next recruiting class. With the early signing period, recruiting was all but done for the next year. I'm not sold on Brownell, but he is in a lurch entirely of Purnell's making. Purnell is principally responsible for us having 2 seniors and no juniors on this team.

The only thing I would ever disparage OP about is the way he

left and he sometimes just didn't know when to say no to the full court press, and it cost us some games because he wouldn't give up using it.

To compare the state of the program from when OP took over

Jan 5, 2013, 6:40 PM

to when BB took over is apples and oranges. OP took over a dumpster fire. BB took over a program that had been to the tournament three years in a row and had 4 highly regarded freshmen on the roster (rightfully ranked or otherwise) and had recently been to the ACC final.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True. Except that Brownell took us to the Tournament...

Jan 5, 2013, 6:49 PM

with players that didn't even fit his system. What will happen when he gets his players?

Purnell's system worked, but it took time to build and the same should be allowed for Brownell. You could make the argument already that Brownell did more with OPs players than OP did. What Brownell got out of Grant his last year was amazing.

Jan 5, 2013, 6:49 PM [ in reply to To compare the state of the program from when OP took over ]

As I posted above that does not honestly reflect the situation in thE transition from Shyatt to Purnell to Brownell. You call Shyatt a dumpster fire but he made huge sacrifices for the long term good of the program (you may not recall that he had to recruit against the rest of the ACC while we played games in the Anderson National Guard armory) and recruited hard to the bitter end. Few people have tried harder than Shyatt - he just couldn't get enough wins. Purnell took the program backwards before going forwards too. But he clearly quit recruiting during his final season. The September early signing period makes basketball very unusual. When Purnell bolted with essentially no one lined up for 2010 (2010 players would sign in September of 2009) he gave Brownell no time to salvage that class. Almost noone other the Calipari could compete with 2 seniors and 0 juniors and this is Purnell's fault.

Jan 5, 2013, 6:52 PM [ in reply to To compare the state of the program from when OP took over ]

Were they highly regarded? yes but that doesn't mean crap when it's time to lace your shoes up and play ball. Most of those freshmen turned out to be disappointments and BB made us of the players that we'd given up on to an extent and wen tot eh tournament and actually won a game. It could have been two if we didn't get royally screwed on the scheduling

OP's biggest problem was he always pressed, even when teams were beating the press

Let's see about your analogy.
2 Seniors; one of which is very suspect for playing well for 40 (or 20) minutes and zero [0] juniors, on a squad needing balance and stability.
That OP really left a full cupboard din't he. Maybe you should be following DePaul, sir. OP is the coach there now and how are they doing in his 3rd year.
Brownell has got to find at least two scorers and a steady group of players. The frosh and sophs will give him a base but the scorer ? still exists. I think like K. C. Rivers, Solomon or the like.
If we had made 60% of our ree throws in 2nd half tonight, we would have won.
You give this loss to OP's empty cupboard, sir.

Say whatever you want about OP. He led us to a lot of great wins, and I give him credit for it. But OP hated living in South Carolina. Do some investigation and you'll find that he bought into all that, "South Carolina is racist" junk because we refuse to remove the Confederate Flag from the Capital." I, for one, am glad he's gone. If he can't be a proud resident of the state he needs to live elsewhere. We don't need him. Whether or not its Brownell, and I think it is, we will be strong in the ACC again, and very soon. The good news is, we're building a program today with a guy who's not ashamed to be in The South. Go Tigers!

He also couldn't keep his **** in his pants and that is why he is coaching at Depaul (and probably about to get fired there)

OP brought in Jennings. Wish Brownell had let him go.***

With the additions of Syracuse, Pitt, and Louisville to the

Jan 5, 2013, 9:53 PM

league I don't think 4th in the conference in wins in the next 8 years is in the cards for us. Purnell's style of play was fun to watch but what was not fun was his seemingly complete inability to make in-game adjustments or coach fundamentals, making for many painful losses. The fact that he's never won an NCAA tournament game in his career is a pretty tough indictment to his overall coaching ability.

I expect Brownell will produce consistent winners here in the years to come. Our talent level seems to be improving class by class and it appears we have a strong nucleus for success building.
