So wife of started paying our daughter for chores. Normal stuff like cleaning her room and making her bed isn't on the list, but extra chores like folding clothes, doing laundry, putting dishes in the dishwaser ect are.
The brilliant thing is we have a mason jar we keep putting money into for her. Christmas ect. So we are taking money from there, "paying" her, and then she puts it in another jar. So it's net 0, but we are teaching a valuable lesson. However, should we be paying children for chores?
Thoughts jounge

landfill stuff.
Putting money in a mason jar for christmas? Check. Calling aforementioned idea BRILLIANT? Yep. Paying a lazy kid to get off her itater 9 and halp a little round the house? Of course. Trying to trick the kid by lying about actually paying her? You got it.
The only way this story ends is when she takes that jar full of nickles and runs off to be a stripper somewheres in Santee.

Tough question.
I feel like my parents (read: dad) did a good job of working the crap out of me without paying. I may be fat, dumb, mean, and ugly, but one thing I have is a good work ethic.
My kids are 5 and 7 and it is like pulling teeth to get them to do any meaningful chores. They would rather take a beating than clean or do chores. I've taken toys/electronics away - they don't care. I've locked them out of the house - they don't care. I've started throwing their belongings away - don't care. Timeout - don' care. Pushing the legal limits of spaking - don't care.
I am 100% committed to them being hardworking, but I haven't found the magic bullet yet.
Also, my wife is lazy as tee-total helll, so that doesn't help the situation any.
I've tried all of the above on her as well to no avail.
It is insanely frustrating.

I ran a paper route after school.
and when I say ran, I mean there were mean dogs everywhere on my route.
Now for the one I raise, she got paid for working hard; like pushing a mower or having to pull weeds out of the vegetable garden, I'd even throw some change her way if tried to help work on a car with my husband but not the normal everyday stuff.

To answer your question:
I think you have to.
Whether it's money, or some other treat (don't get any ideas, CS02), positive reinforcement may be the answer.
I feel like that is some sort of ####### idea "positive reinforcement"... but if it works, then it works.
I'm all for anything to make my life better and easier. If I have to shell out a few quarters or Oreo, or bubble gum, or whatever, then so be it.

With food, clothes, health care, a roof over my head, a private education, lavish international trips, with love, and with a car in high school.
Once they understand that, they should be LOOKING for chores to do for "free".

We didn't pay our kids for chores or give them an allowance

They were told it was their responsibility to help out with cleaning, laundry, some light yard work, etc. because they lived there. We told them "No one pays us to do it."
That said, as long as they helped out and kept good grades we were lenient with things they wanted or place they wanted to go.
So far that has worked out. Our older will graduate in 4 weeks with a BS in Bio-Systems Engineering, Magna ### Laude. Our younger has straight A's as she gets ready for high school this fall.

I worked on a tree farm for free every weekend during the school year and every day of the summer when. Heck, how do you thing my shoulders got so sechsy? It was from hauling around 15 gallon crepe myrtles.
I was lucky to get paid a pack of crackers and a warm RC Cola. If I complained about it, I go TWO lashings with a bamboo tree stake across the face.
Look how I turned out!!!

My dad dragged my brother and I out of bed the first day of Christmas break while at Clemson. Took us down to the woods and had the two of us plant 60 acres of pine seedlings by hand. Only payment was mason jars full of tap water and pimento cheese sandwiches from the Hilltop truck stop. It was implied that when the trees were ready to harvest, we would get a cut of the money. We're getting close... the old man better not renig on that one, or I may just grow a pair and say something.

Nope - paid maids, nanny, land scale guy, personal coaches..

And various tutors to handle things.
IMO the maids, nanny & land scape contractor all would do better work than your kids.

because I got a part time job at the Food Lion. Thought I was doing a great thing. Worked hard there. Met a pretty young lady working there. One night we got out late and I was walking her to her car like a gentleman. I kissed her and it was magical. Then after she left I turned around and my dad hit me in the head with a wrench!
