One thing most people are not addressing about the turnovers

5

Sep 6, 2023, 2:53 PM

on Monday night was that if we convert on all of them, 100%, we still only win 34-28. The Spread was 12.5.

The more likely scenario was that we get (2) touchdowns and convert 2/3 kicks if all went well. In that instance, we lose 28-27. If we were to make 2 touchdowns and make all 3 kicks, we win 30-28.

Of course, if we score, that could change things for Duke on the other side (and how our Defense calls the game and how the players play).

My main point though is simply saying that if we convert most(all) of out trips into the redzone, then things are fine and dandy is a gross misrepresentation.

We're used to beating teams by 14-28 points. I thought we had the players to beat Duke by 14. I was worried about this being the first game under Riley's belt though, and figured it to be a very close game.

My biggest takeaway: sure hope the offense finds their stride in the coming weeks...

the 2nd fumble led directly to Duke pts, so that was a 14 pt

swing. They don't score 28 if we score on Mafah's fumble possession and take a 14-13 lead.

But yes, it would have still been a close, competitive game regardless.

That's a good point.

Regardless, we still don't win by more than 6 points in any scenario that I can envision.

if we convert the TDs we also eliminate a Duke possession/momentum shift. if we score those 2 TDs we would have put the game away 28-7 the other way...

is not only known for throwing caution to the wind by brutally violating the I before E rool, but was also the author of the famed Rubenstein Trap in chess and would take a central pawn if you were as careless playing black.

I've been around, and am very aware of the IF trap, among many others.

Don't forget that there was a Shipley fumble

at about their 5-yard line that he recovered. If he didn't get that, we would have had 3 fumbles in the red zone!

You can't use this logic. As Uncle Lou said on YouTube, you have to also say that Duke could have converted many times themselves to worsen the score.

two blocked chip shots, we win 27-13.

40+ yards is not a chip shot...

So, 24-13 if he misses it.

Sep 6, 2023, 3:15 PM

27-13 if he doesn't.

First games are weird affairs. Not typically indicative of what teams are offensively. Still issues to address, but without all of the gnashing of teeth.

Except they had 2 turnovers too...

To they score touchdowns if they don't have those.

You can't play what-if only what-is and what-was.

One with 10 seconds left in the half.

Sep 6, 2023, 3:39 PM

So, no, they wouldn't have scored a TD then. The field goal would have been 50 yards.

This entire thread is a what-if scenario.

The teams of the last couple of seasons can't recover from turnovers, look back to when DW4 was at Clemson, they had a lot of turnovers, but still managed to win against teams like Duke.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you eliminate mistakes by both teams we lose 42-20***

Dabo always said ,you play like you practice. We must have had really bad practices. We played Like first time on a football field. Coaches all 3 phases are very much at fault. Kids have not. Practice well. It shows

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would have been more like 27 - 13

Sep 6, 2023, 3:32 PM

Score on the PM fumble and make the two FGs.

I get your point

But I think we win 35-21 without turnovers

I've never seen a more intent bunch of losers in all my life.

People on here saying, "Duke will score a TD if they hadn't fumbled on their own 20?"

Has your #### brain gone completely to mushrooms?
