One loss season.

In a hypothetical season:
We beat Ga, coots and win the ACC Championship We lose in an upset by someone, say N.C. State
Could we still be ranked first or second in the BCS? I know a lot depends on how the season plays out elsewhere. If two teams like Bama and Ohio State are undefeated, its not possible, but assume all top teams have one loss.

I'd like to say yes but it would depend on how some other teams do. I think with the ACC's rep it is doubtful. Now if there is a one loss FSU which we beat maybe.

I don't think our chances are very good if we lose to anyone but UGAy, and even that's a long shot. Lots of intangibles w/ other teams losing, etc. If we are to drop one, it must come early and to a highly ranked team. Anything after the opener and our chances go down. Way down. Just mho.

I agree. The only time I can remember a late loss by a team that didn't cost them the NC was Alabama, after losing to LSU pretty late in the season. (I think AL dropped 2 spots, and the loss was at their place). If we lost late in the year, we would fall much farther, and we would have a steep uphill climb if we lose any of our games. They might even take an sec team over us if we are undefeated, (if that's possible in the formula used this year), IMO.

Don't think so, heres why....

The pollster's simply don't like our conference. They don't respect us but that could change. If we beat ThUGA or SCar, perhaps both- and FSU handles Fla then we'd be headed in the right direction. But, obviously CU plays FSU, and somebody has to lose. It is imperative that both the winner and loser beat their rivals. It must happen.
Our only chance to make it as a one loss team is for some unprecidented things to happen; ie: The winner of the $eC has two losses, both Oregon and Stanford have atleast one loss, Ohio St losses to UM or in their conf CG, and of course we need Louisville to lose to Cincy.
Even if, and its a stretch, that were to happen you still gotta figure Boise St. plays a soft sched and therefore must lose twice. The Big12 winner loses atleast one. And the X factor- each year some team burst onto the scene; last season it was Notre Dame. As for this season, well draw names out of a hat because thats the best bet. An associate actually did something similar and UCLA was that team.
Regardless, we need wins over both SEC teams. Thats the emphasis.

Thanks for the analysis. We could also hope for a GT win over Ga. Not likely but we could hope.

How many games are there between ACC and SEC during this season? I know the three rivalry games and Vandy usually plays someone. I'm not aware of others.

It's a longshot

A couple things would have to happen.
1a. The loss would have to be early-season. A loss any later than the Syracuse game would doom us, OR
1b. The loss is to Florida State, and FSU loses 2 conference games. Unlikely, but possible--nobody expected them to lose to NC State last year.
2. There's only one team between the SEC and PAC-12 with 0 or 1 losses. i.e. Oregon or Stanford at 12-1 would probably be put ahead of us. I'm guessing a 12-1 UGA team would be ahead of us too. It's hard to see a 12-1 SCar team ahead of us in the BCS standings, given that in your scenario we've beaten them. However, if they then went on to win the SEC Championship (unlikely, but possible), I could see the existing biases allowing them to jump us.
3. Ohio State stubs its toe on someone.
It's hard to say who the BCS would pick between us and an 11-1 Big XII champion. I'm not sure who's favored--OK State?
