One and done, college hoops.

I used to follow college basketball closely. For several years anytime there was a regional in Orlando, I would go. I would fill out my bracket on ESPN and follow it after every game.

One and done did me in. I follow it virtually not at all. I can't tell you the name of a single player on FSU's team. The best I can tell you is their best recruit (a one and doner) had to sit out half the year because the NCAA decreed he had broken some rule about international students attending summer camps.)

I know Gonzaga has a big man named Timme who is really good.

But, with all the one and done that permeates hoops, I lost interest. College hoops is nothing more than a G League for 18 year olds.

Power five - the best college conferences in the country in terms of preparing guys for the NBA. Just watch the draft. The first round will be almost exclusively from those conferences with some European guys thrown in and maybe a couple (like Timme) from smaller conferences. The vast majority will be 18-19 years old.

But, those same teams and conferences, don't have the best teams in the country. 3 teams in the the power five are in the Elite Eight. And none of them were considered the best team in their conference.

I'm rooting for Princeton to win in all. If they don't, then Gonzaga. At least they have some seniors on their team.

Calipari said a few years ago, "My priority is to prepare guys for the NBA. That's what I promise them when I recruit them. My priority is not to win the National Championship; it is to prepare my players for the NBA."

And, the NCAA - which includes presidents of the universities in the Power Five - set the rules up to make it easy for coaches in their conferences to have that same priority.

If you want some smiles, go read an article about Timme

for Gonzaga. The phrase "He marches to the beat of his own drummer" could definitely have been coined about him.

I’m pretty much there with you at this point…

They have ruined college basketball and fast approaching the same in college football. The whole idea of committing to a school and/or a team for more than a year is fading away in college and professional sports. It’s gotten so bad that as a fan you lose any affinity for a team.

Thankfully we have some college coaches who are able to get through to some kids to get then to stick with their team, but not sure how much longer that will be the case. Lots of rat poison out there in their ears telling them to opt out of bowl games, go after NIL $$, transfer for more $ or perhaps playing time. Lots of selling those hopes and prayers instead of teaching them the value of hard work and sacrifice to build a foundation for the long run.

Oh well. 🤷‍♂️ Good old fashioned values have been flushed down the drain in lieu of quick $ and fame.

My fear for football is that...

.... the transfer portal and NIL will do to football what one-and-done did to basketball.

Basketball players go to college knowing they will "transfer" to the NBA in one year. Football players can't do that. They have to wait three years before they can "transfer" to the NFL.

But, they can "transfer" to another team if they think:
1. They can get a pay raise.
2. They will become a higher draft when they transfer to the NFL.

It will be interesting to see how NIL and Portal work after a few years. But, it's hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube. And, it appears many coaches (and administrations) don't want to regulate the Portal or NIL. They seem to like it just the way it is.

I disagree. NIL era will be different

One and done was the big debating point a few years ago but it’s a bit outdated now tbh. Fringe nba Players are going to be coming back more with potential NIL deals. Look at Bacot going back to UNC again.

There are far more NIL deals available out there than NBA rookie roster slots.

Also which of the 8 teams left are relying on one and ones? I actually like having a variety of conferences represented and seeing non mid majors like FAU and SDSU able to make elite 8 runs. I can’t imagine why people would say that’s a bad thing. None of the traditional powers are alive in this event except UConn who had been down a while.

And if you don’t like underdogs winning, you can just go back to last year when the final four was Duke, UNC, Kansas and Villanova. So a mix between the two years. Something for everyone.

I wasn't clear.

I love the fact that the one-and-done factories (UK, Duke, UNC, etc.) are not succeeding. I hope college basketball is dominated by teams that don't rely on one and doners. That's one reason I like UVA. Bennett hasn't caved to that philosophy (unlike Coach K who did).

But, for regular season, it's the teams that are filled with the one and doners who are continually on TV and getting all the love from the commentators and experts.

The publicity of the "glamour teams" reminds me of guys who go to games to see slam dunks and really don't care who wins the game. "I want to see an ESPN Top 10 play. Heck, I don't even know which teams are playing. Doesn't matter."

I’m the same way. Back in the day(late 70’s thru mid 90’s) I could name starting line ups for every ACC team. Over the 4 years that the majority of players were in school, you felt like you knew them. You either pulled for them(Jordan, Bias)or against them(Laettner, JR Reid). So there was a personal feel to the tournaments, both ACC and NCAA.

Now I can’t name a single player outside our own team in the ACC, much less the NCAA field. Part of its age, but mostly apathy from one and dones, portal, etc.

It’s still entertaining to watch if you tune in, bc it’s sports and there is drama, but it’s not near the product it used to be, for me anyway.

A Duke/UNLV type rematch will never happen again.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Nice post as usual Bret

I was always a big college hoops fan. Attended Clemson from as the furthest southern school in ACC in 1979, mainly due to climate and ACC Basketball. Loved it, love the university, love the great people in the state of South Carolina, and found out through Danny Ford's teams, Clemson played a little football as well.

I've attended three Final Fours, countless Sweet 16's, and a handful of ACC tourneys. But to your point, One & Done coupled with Coach Brownell, knocked me out a decade ago. I still know college hoops and enter a pool of 200+ Hampton, VA March Madness bettors in VA purely for betting purposes -- if Texas wins out, I will win the pot this year. But damm shame about One & Done. It should be same as Football & Baseball - minimum 3 years.

It could be 3 and done, but universities don't want that.

Mar 25, 2023, 7:18 PM

Universities love 1 and done. Universities have the power to make the changes. They don't need to ask the NBA or congress or anybody else.

All the NCAA would have to do is say when you sign a guy to a scholarship he counts against your total number for that sport (85, 15, whatever) until he graduates or 6 years have passed. No exceptions.

See how many one and doners Calipari recruits then.

The three point shot ruined the game of basketball.

One and done ruined the teams.

Now NIL and the transfer portal appears to be destroying everything that is left.

Then we're asked to continue to suffer through the product that BrownL puts on the court.

Hard to stomach when you know how good it could be.

I prefer straight out of HS to NBA,why wait 1 yr.***

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's an NBA rule.

Mar 25, 2023, 10:12 PM

The reason they havew it is because it is far cheaper for the NBA to have universities develop an 18 year old HS grad than it is for them to do so.

NCAA didn't set the rule. NBA did.
