Is Alabama tight? Crimson Tide determined to not have any fun in New Orleans
No. 4 Alabama is determined to not have any fun at this year’s Sugar Bowl. The Crimson Tide face off against No. 1 Clemson in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, and while Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said he would defer to his team leaders when it comes to having fun and keeping everybody in line, Alabama head coach Nick Saban has a different tact. They are taking this serious because the future of their program depends on it. Playing tight isn't good, it means we are all up in der heads haha!

Saban's got a lot of very serious-minded, and focused players. That's a good thing. But, at the same time, life is a journey not a destination.
At the end of the day, it's hard to argue with their success. There is more than one way to skin a cat (my students hate that analogy when I use it in reference to different ways to solve a problem).
I hope our players aren't out until 1 in the morning though. Yikes!

For Saban's legacy. Nothing else matters. The players' success is a 'collateral benefit', but it's all about Saban.

They have already fallen behind and they are trying to catch up. If things don't go well for them early; they are in trouble. Our guys know they will find a way and won't be so uptight. We have more room to breathe and it is obvious.
Go Tigers!

I don't either. Good mindset. I also feel our players are loose around the media and like to have a lot of fun. I know they are serious when it comes to playing the game and will be "business as usual" when it's that time.

Because others did not step up. They would not be here if one of a few did not stumble. We would, however. Hence, #1. Bama's schedule was a joke and they lost the only real game. They know it, too.

I think a lot of people are missing something here. Alabama is THE REMATCH III. This is for the title King of the NCAA. No one wanted to see another Ohio st. spanking. I have ohst. friends...they actually didn't want to make the okayoffs because we would have played them. Clemson vs. Bammer is for ratings, not most deserving

Tight or loose, as long as the approach fits the players then it's the right one. Saban' s "Process" has proven to be very effective and it attracts players who want that type of experience. Dabo is certainly different and his personality brings a different mindset. Both are perfectionists who have different approaches. I've seen Bama's "Tight" players dismantle teams that trash talk, get in their faces after every play, wear Black uniforms (we've never been blacked out) and other "loose" tactics. I see the game being hard fought by hard-hitting players . Whatever coaching approach, it's being delivered by the top two coaches in the country. Regarding the earlier comment "it's all about Saban" do some research on his life and his approach. You'll find it is very similar to Dabo's story .

Agree 100%. Both programs sell winning, but they go about it in different ways. One thing I know: it's been fun to watch the past couple of years. I don't see this one being close though. We aren't talking about a good team having a good season here. This is serious big boy football. This is all about which program is truly the top dog. I wouldnt feel as bad about losing a natty as i would about losing this game. This is dynasty football.

I don’t understand the point of this story. From everything
Dec 28, 2017, 2:19 PM
|
|
I have read, Dabo and Saban are approaching this the same way...allowing the team leaders to decide curfews and such. If Bama’s team feels it is best for them, then what is wrong with that? And doesn’t Dabo agree that the fun is in the winning? Can anyone argue the point Saban made that 2 years from now you won’t remember what you did on Bourbon St, but will remember if you won or lost? This article seems nitpicky and biased...as if Bama and Saban have never succeeded in their bowl prep. And what will your article say about Bama’s approach if we lose? I think we should just worry about Clemson and let Bama worry about Bama. davidhood®

I have a feeling about this game with Bama.
Dec 28, 2017, 2:20 PM
|
|
The feeling is it's not going to be close. The problem I have is figuring out if it's us that beats Bama by 10+ points, or Bama that beats us by 10+ points. The end result is that we will either dethrone Bama and move atop the college football world, or they beat us, and take their throne back and we're relegated to second tier. A 3 touchdown win would not surprise me. Or a three touchdown loss.
This is one of those games I can't wait to watch to see which way my gut should have gone.

Would you feel the same way if Saban was your coach? Clemson's locker room and brogan is much more visible to the public then is Alabama's. (This doesn't mean that Bama is a football version of North Korea , It just doesn't get promoted. As far as life after football, look into Saban's Record of higher graduation rates, NFL contracts, along with financial and life coaching, etc. just because he doesn't dance or throw pizza parties doesn't make him less successful. Win or lose Monday night, he's our guy and brought our weakest team in the last for five years to this point.

You almost said it, that Bama doesn't even deserve to be in N.O. They are a weak team compared to the other 3 playoff teams and if it wasnt for the bias, a more deserving team would be playing Clemson. If you dont believe that, drive by the Clemson practice facility and count the headstones from 2017. (A headstone for each top 25 team the Tigers degeated.)

most is having had no fun, did football things all day in N.O., moved around hotel only, AND lost the game. That will be painful. Tigs by 14 points against yet another team of many that made the moment WAY too big.

I don’t care if they have fun or not. What does interest me is if the referees will have the sack to call targeting against Bama if it presents itself like it did multiple times last year, or is the fear of Saban too much for them?

That’s silly. That game was called very fair. Yes there were two blatant targeting calls that went uncalled. Watson on the first play of he game and Williams a couple series later but let’s be honest Cain and Williams got away with a push off or two and the first run route run by Legget was absolutely PI the second one was defensive holding on Alabama for tackling Scott. Factor all that in and besides the obvious penalties for motion or formations or defensive offsides that game was decided by the players the way it should be. Football is truly the only sport where the officials can dictate the outcome of a game and facing saban one would think the game would be called one sided and it wasn’t.

They’re saying it’s a business trip and they’re determined not to have fun and I feel for them. I have three kids, a son who’s graduating from VT in May and my favorite child my beautiful daughter that is a junior at Clemson. They’re at their schools to earn a degree. So should I tell them the fun is in accomplishing your goal and being a success that’s when you have fun? Really? What happens when you lose? An entire football season, all that work in the offseason. All those summer classes so you could take a lighter load in the fall all of that and your coach thinks so little of you as a person that you don’t deserve to have a little fun? Are the Alabama players that irresponsible? Is he afraid his captains will get caught after curfew with weed on them and a firearm? Afraid he’ll have to dole out severe punishments like suspending a star player for the first half against Kent state. Saban is about saban. Plain and simple.
