CLEMSON, S.C. -- Seventh-ranked Clemson needed a quarter to shake the effects of last week's open date, then recovered for a 38-21 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Virginia.

Terry Allen and Tracy Johnson ran for two touchdowns apiece Saturday to lead Clemson to its 27th straight triumph over the Cavaliers. Clemson, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, maintained the longest current winning streak over another Division I-A club with its dominance of Virginia, 3-3 and 1-2.

The Cavaliers entered the game averaging 400 yards in offense, best in the conference. Although the Clemson defense was ranked first in the nation, Virginia scored onits first two possessions for a 14-7 advantage.

'Virginia is an excellent offensive team, by far the best one we've faced (this year),' Clemson Coach Danny Ford said. 'Of course, we knew that going in and we had a hard time getting that across to our people because I don't think we played too well defensively. We just played very, very average.'

The Tigers rebounded to lead 24-14 at halftime. Allen ran 4 yards to tie the score 14-14 wtih 10:03 left in the second quarter. The big play of the 76-yard march was a 49-yard run by Wesley McFadden, putting the ball at the Cavaliers 8-yard line.

Johnson gave Clemson its first lead, 21-14, on a 1-yard TD dive with 5:23 left in the first half.

David Treadwell's 18-yard field goal on the final play of the first half moved Clemson ahead 24-14.

Virginia closed to 24-21 with 9:41 to play in the third quarter when Durwin Greggs scored on a 1-yard run. The Tigers responded on their next possession. Johnson dashed 2 yards for a touchdown with 4:30 remaining in the period, giving Clemson a 31-21 lead.

Joe Henderson added a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth period to account for the Tigers' final points.

Virginia Coach George Welsh was satisfied with his offense's ability to move the ball early.

'That's a big-league defense,' Welsh said of Clemson. 'You're not going to be consistent against them. Nobody else has. We did some good things. Another touchdown and you never know.'

Virginia took a 14-7 lead with 2:47 remaining in the first quarter on a 3-yard TD run by Marcus Wilson. His score was set up by a 54-yard pass from Scott Secules to John Ford to the Clemson 5.

Freshman year. Might even still have the t-shirt. We beat them all the time back then and at one time I had a t-shirt that said 27-0. They were the homecoming game for good reason back then.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a soon to be 8 year old that already loved the tigers. But seeing it live and not just on the tv or listening on the radio was an incredible experience.

Pretty sure that was a homecoming game
