On Dabo and the state of college athletics

It is easy to say that “the game has past you by”, but in Dabo’s case it might be true. Not saying that Dabo isn’t a very good coach, he is, but great coaches adapt to new rules, new environments, and make necessary adjustments. If they don’t, they figuratively “die on the vine”.

Take the case of Tony Bennett, a very good coach who taught the “right priciples”, and won a national championship. He could not adjust to the new way of college basketball, so he decided that he would not change his beliefs, so he stepped aside after a great run at Virginia. Dabo demonstrated a very fondness of Tony Bennett, and rightly so.

Let’s also take the case of the great Coach K. He saw the changing environment of college basketball and adjusted his coaching to fit the new environment of one-and-dones and transfers. He succeeded and continued his success. No better illustration of how he adjusted is when he coached a team of NBA all stars at the Olympics. He did not make the conform to his strict structure, but met them where they were and made it work to produce one of the greatest teams of all time.

The question is: Who is Dabo going to be?
