On Cole vs. Nick (Chad's assessment)

Nov 17, 2014, 2:00 PM

I think that the coaches - for some reason - just have this mystical pecking order in their minds that is impervious to being affected by actual performance on the field.

We saw it with Cole and Deshaun early in year and it has reared its ugly head again with Nick and Cole.

Listen to the Morris video. Advanced warning - I am paraphrasing and including several of my own interpretations.

Press: Why did Cole play bad? Morris: Not his fault - everybody else has to play better. Cole played great at GA - he can do it again. He was breaking records for completions last year. Also - he has been under a lot of pressure this year. Turnovers are bad (careful to use language that omits any reference that Cole actually committed one two or three of the them).

Press: How about Nick? Morris: Well he performed (Chad's actual quote and what the hell does that mean - he performed well...bad...what?). Guys - dude has hardly played in practice. This guy is a scrub. Those completed unintercepted passes you saw the other night were a mirage. Guy should have sucked a whole lot worse than that. We are really lucky. AND BY THE WAY - he missed a protection package - Terrible Terrible Terrible freaking mistake - almost unforgivable - probably why we lost the game and our morale went in the pooper.

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

I read Chad's comments...

OK - Go back again.

Chad on Cole (early in video) - how Chad carefully avoids calling him out to harshly. Immediately deflects blame and notes reasons/excuses. Also makes sure to include Cole's highlights - GA game, 19 completions last year. Also careful to note anything directly related to Cole's mistakes. (pick 6's etc.)

Now move to Chad's comments on Nick. Led by saying he "performed". Then moved directly to comments on how few reps he has gotten this year. THEN he blasts Nick on the protection coverage and that is completely in contrast to how he completely tried to avoid any specific accounting of Cole's poor play.

I stand by my observation of the video and my post.

you'll have to link me to the video....

I'm reading his comments from the article.

I haven't seen a statement that "it's not his (Cole) fault." I did see him say that it wasn't all Cole's fault. He said everybody has to play better. I think that statement is generically true.

Having trouble finding where he "BLASTS" Nick on missing protection. That may translate better in video as well, but saying he missed it is a true statement.

The article I read was plenty negative on Cole's play without completely taring him down. which I don't think the coaches should be doing in public anyway. He seems to have a pretty good grasp that Cole is playing poorly.

I would also agree with Morris' idea that Stoudt has played progressively worse since the beginning of the season. I think the facts would bear that out.

Again, I should watch the video. Maybe I will get a better feeling about what you are saying.

Based solely on the articles I'm reading on here, I see no sugar coating or excuse making or exagerration of the facts.
