Old Coach Howard riddle...

Jun 19, 2015, 11:34 AM

Why do birds fly upside down over the University of South Carolina?

Because there's nothing worth crapping on.

yep, Coach told me & GF around age 70 that he "invented" the Easley By-pass by

Telling Hwy Patrol to let the Coots stew in backed-up traffic in 1960 ( their 1st time to play Clemson at Tigertown EVER.. Or about 60+ years)..

And sure enough, after the 1962 game the Coot big-wheels ( big donors, legislators, lawyers, fans) complained so much that funds were approved for that 4 lane (123 Bypass) road from Greenville to Clemson!!

LOL & GoTiGERS!

It was torture trying to watch the three yards and a cloud of dust against the good teams of that era,Tech,Oklahoma, USC etc.
We could run over the ACC teams back then with Crain & Mauldin but we would only throw when we got behind with Parker,Ray and the Needle. It was tough to play and watch at times.

What was also frustrating back then is that we had guys who could catch the ball: Rogers, Poole,Fogle,Meadowcroft, Buddy Gore, Kit Jackson, as well as QB'S who could throw the rock in Parker,Ray, & Addison.

Coach Howard

Jun 19, 2015, 12:01 PM

My freshman year ('68), Coach Howard spoke to all of us and welcomed us to Clemson. He encouraged us to get involved in campus life saying, "I know that some of you fellas are going to go out there and join some of those fraternities like Tappa Kegga Day or Aye Felta Thi."

He was all Clemson! He was "All In" before there was an "All In".

He came across as an old country bumpkin but

the man was brilliant. We owe a lot to him for helping lay the foundation for what Clemson is today.

Coach Howard was really a soft-hearted man when it came to things other than football and criminals.

He did a lot for Clemson area---the Town and the University. I suspect he would really feel very positive about Dabo and his staff. He was easy to talk with when he wasn't coaching or dealing with football players' issues.

always loved his response back in the 60's when asked why CU didn't have a crew team, since the lake was so accessible.frank replied that he couldn't see spending money on a sport where you sit down and go backwards to win.the man was a true original in the best sense.
