You have a piece of wood that you order from Louisville Slugger and they fab it up for you because you have specks for feel and what not. The wood is heavier here or there, the handle is a certain way, thinner or fatter.
what are the restrictions or limits on this.
If you want more wood towards the middle where the ball hits more anyway, so be it. It should be that way anyway. That makes sense.
If all of sudden Team X starts getting fatter bats in the middle, why wasn't this done a long time ago?
For you physics people who get this, OF COURSE the bat swings and hits better with more wood in the middle versus the end of the bat, it's called angular momentum. If you move the mass closer to the pivot point, it's EASIER to swing it FASTER in a circle. This is the same as a figure skater pulling their arms IN and the spin faster. So this point is just now being discovered?
I've got time on my hands, GO.

This has been going on for the last year or so. The media has made it a big story. The bats are approved by MLB and follow all the rules. It is just a shift downward of the "sweet spot" depending on the batter's swing. Traditional bats have the thickest part at the end of the barrel, this new design moves it towards the middle portions of the barrel. Not all players like the new design. You still have to make solid contact for it to work, and in baseball if you fail 7 out of 10 times at the plate you are a Hall of Famer.

There are drawbacks with it for contact hitters in that if you miss the sweet spot there’s a lot less power off the bat. Essentially this design is a “go big or go home” bat. I saw an article that I can’t find now that basically said for a long time bats we’re basically all the same, and it’s like playing golf with 1 club for all situations. This new design is basically a driver, but it will probably spawn a new era or “situational” bats of different designs moving the “meat” of the bat depending on the need, so basically the same as adding woods/ irons/ wedges.
There’s a great deal of precision involved in the manufacturing of it to make sure that the weight isn’t moved too low or left too high that would dampen swing speed, so perhaps it’s also the manufacturing processes that needed to catch up as well as to why it’s taken so long for someone to capitalize on this

Could I get a job as a bat caddy? It would be a great job for an old retired guy. You would only have to walk from the dugout to the batters box, not a 7000 yd golf course.

Could they design a small pocket with a Velcro flap to keep their sunglasses in? Especially for night games…..yes these young players wear them after the sun goes down.

Bats have to be one solid piece of wood. There is a maximum diameter. It can't be over 42" long.
The new bats comply.
OF COURSE the bat swings and hits better with more wood in the middle versus the end of the bat, it's called angular momentum. If you move the mass closer to the pivot point, it's EASIER to swing it FASTER in a circle
Putting weight closer to the pivot point isn't always a good idea...just swinging faster doesn't generate more power. If you miss the "fat part" and hit the ball closer to the end, there is now less mass there and your power is weakened. If you put too much weight too close to the hands, the bats will break. Also, more weight at the end of the bat helps it keep momentum through the ball - again, just "faster" doesn't mean "more power".
