Ok, if you're Dabo. What do you do THIS season to improve this team?

2

Oct 22, 2023, 11:02 AM

1. I think I would sit both Ship and Cade. They are responsible for too many turnovers and that's job number one.

2. Go away from any designed runs up the middle - or just enough to keep the defense honest. When they start to pressure, call some good RB screens.

Jay Haynes needs more touches.
Mitchell Mayes should never start again.
Force feed Briningstool and Tyler Brown.
Take all decision making away from Cade.
Let Riley take full control of the offense.

Is Sewell any better?

I mean he's young.

I’ll take Sewell all day because he will improve with more playing time.

Mayes is in his 4th year. He’s not going to get any better.

Yes. I was going to post the same thing about Haynes. It is almost a misconception around splitting touches between Ship/Mafah. They are similar in run style. We need someone like Haynes to get more touches to provide some diversity. He can take it to the house on any play but isn’t likely to get you the tough yard after contact like Ship/Mafah.

Re: Ok, if you're Dabo. What do you do THIS season to improve this team?

Oct 22, 2023, 11:15 AM

You’re exactly right. There’s no balance at RB. Ship and Mafah are too similar. Haynes can fly. He’ll make his fair share of mistakes. But he’ll also take one 75 yards. Defenses would have to adjust with him on the field.

Re: Ok, if you're Dabo. What do you do THIS season to improve this team?

Oct 22, 2023, 11:19 AM

I think of this every time Ship gets caught by a shoelace. He is always “this close” to breaking it but essentially never does. On those plays, Haynes could provide a true explosive burst.

There will be times that Haynes gets blown up where Ship/Mafah might be able to sustain the contact. But I’d be ok with some calculated losses, eg, getting some 1 yard plays instead of 3 yard plays, for a couple of explosive runs. Like you said, it would force structural change and be another element of the offense that would need to be accounted for by the D.

Ship has a lot of first down runs that Haynes could have taken for long TDs

Ship can’t get by safety (or whoever) after gets to the second level. Seems like he leaves a lot of yards on the field.

LOL, Cade was supposed to hand off on the last play, but he kept it and ran backwards. Let Helms and Mafah get the snaps, can't hurt.

Agree to bench Ship and Cade for awhile, even

1

Oct 22, 2023, 11:09 AM

if it's just the first half Saturday. If we don't have the skill on offense, at least dress it a little differently. Watching teams that constantly shifting/ motioning to give the defense something to think about. Play with a little more urgency on offense. Just don't understand why we're not shifting/motioning but constantly snap the ball with under 10 seconds on the play clock. It's like we're just giving the D plenty of time to set to whatever we're doing.

You can only put bandaids on bullet holes this season. You need the offseason to reflect and make meaningful changes. However, I would get our best young talent more reps and start to identify who you really have for the future that you can count on.

If I were Dabo I would also give the staff free reign to manage a game or two and just stay out of the way. You need to find out who you can trust on the staff as well, because changes definitely need to be made in the offseason. Return the Waffle House menu to Riley and let's really see what he's got.

I agree with #2.

#1, I’m not sure. I think the the play calling has hurt Ship. We need some more off-tackle or creative running plays. Up the middle is a no go. I think Cade has played really well but with some bad decisions mixed in. I think putting Cade on the move more often outside the pocket would keep the LBs honest and take some pressure off of the OL. Cade makes some plays that are Wow, then a play that makes you go Whoa creeps in at a critical time.

You can't rin too much other than up the middle in the shotgun.

As far as your suggestion about running off tackle, it's not the 1980s.

We pulled lineman and ram off tackle a lot in the cuse game and it worked much better , not saying it works agaisnt every team but it wouldn’t hurt to throw it in the mix some. But how fast it seems like DL get contact on our rbs in the backfield it wouldn’t matter. The OL is just bad.

They are stuck where they are personnel wise. Maybe a few more touches for this guy versus that guy but nothing really impactful there. It has to start in the trenches, specifically the OL. I honestly thought that would be the case after 2 weeks since WF and how they got man handled. If not then, when?

It's not just getting physically whipped. There's too many guys getting passed up. Zone blocking is about blocking the guy that crosses your face. These guys just aren't doing that. Then you have the problem of multiple guys just getting flat out whipped in pass pro. I don't remember seeing guys get tossed aside as often as I have this season.

I mean, what kind of plays are you supposed to call when your line can't block its way out of a wet paper bag? You think Hunter Helms or Phil Mafah are going to do any better when they have defensive lineman in their faces all night?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I know what you mean, them showing Miller getting whipped

Oct 22, 2023, 11:47 AM [ in reply to I know what you mean, them showing Miller getting whipped ]

That “we got who we got” mentality is why we are losing game after game. We have almost 100 players dressed out, but NO ONE gets benched when they stand there with their fingers up their butts. If the ones we are playing don’t want to play, put some of those pristine uniforms in there that just might give us the spark we need. You won’t have to bench many of them or for very long once they see there are consequences to not doing what they are supposed to. Ship should have been made to sit out a whole game though after yelling at coaches. There are others that could have done as well as him lately, and just possibly would have held onto the ball too. Ship and CK need to spend an hour a day after practice learning to hand off without fumbling, and all the receivers should have to carry a football EVERYWHERE they go for a week, so they will learn they are supposed to get and keep it when it comes to them!

1. If we benched them, we would just be punting ftom inside our 30 yard line as opposed to fumbling at the goal line.

2. I'm not sure you have too many running plays out of the shotgun, besides running it up the middle. Most everybody else fies the same thing. I doubt getting in the I formation and running off tackle or student body left would work.

This season is already lost. Holding the team together and taking one game at a time is all there is left. Don’t worry about bowl games or any other such nonsense. Play the young guys and let’s see what everyone has going for them. This is a rebuild year so let’s start now

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. I know the back-up QB is the most popular guy on the team...

Oct 22, 2023, 11:15 AM

Re: Ok, if you're Dabo. What do you do THIS season to improve this team?

Oct 22, 2023, 11:23 AM

Recruit and develop players and coach them up! CK may not be the answer at QB right now. But Clemson had elite QB talent under Boyd, Watson & Lawrence. RB and WR's were elite too! Coaches different too!
Dabo has to coach them up. Early results look bad though. This is Dabo's mess that has been brewing since 2020-1. Now it's out there and up to him to get the most out of his players and coaches. Dabo brought in a new OC-Riley, but is the offense better? The record? Dabo is now under the microscope, and he looked shaken last nite. He looked so different from years ago. I do not believe he has the answers, which is scary right now.

I feel that sometimes a fresh set of eyes can help solve a problem. I would like to see Dabo bring in some of our former players to tell him what they are seeing and what they would change. I would also like for Dabo and Riley to rewatch the Syracuse game to see how a team should run third and short.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have a few.

Oct 22, 2023, 11:37 AM

1. Give Vizzina some series. Don’t limit the playbook. See what he can do.

2. Play Mafah more. Give Hayes some reps to give defenses a different look.

3. Target Brown and Williams more in the passing game.

4. Try more variety in play calling. We are too predictable. Run some counters. Try some delayed handoffs. Something different.

5. Stop being too conservative on defense. Last night we went into prevent mode and it hurt us.

Ship and Cade are fine. They are both victims of Dabo and Riley trying to do same job.
1. Turn O over to Riley completely. This means give him immediate hiring and firing control of all offensive coaching positions.
2. Dabo loses his Waffle House menu when Offense is on field.
3. Hire a proven D C. And return Wess to analyst role.
4. Hire a special teams coach.

I would do #3 at end of season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I keep seeing this about Dabo interfering with the offense.

Oct 22, 2023, 2:45 PM

It's one of two things:
1) you don't trust Dabo who said Riley has the only keys
2) Emotional and trying to assign blame to feel more in control

I posted this earlier, but Vince Dooley, who we all remember as a fantastic coach would force anybody that fumbled a ball on the Georgia team to carry the football around with them everywhere they went at all times for the following week. He then would have spies on them so that if they were caught without the ball in their possession, They would sit out the first quarter of the next game. Let’s just say Georgia under Vince Dooley was not known for fumbling the football, so I believe I would start there !
