There’s a difference between the Michael Jordan’s, Kobe Bryant's, Tom Brady’s and Patrick Mahomes of the world and everybody else. They have the desire to be great and don’t need to be pushed. Their drive, effort and will to win separates them. At some point and time you have to push yourself to be the best and stop relying on others to push you.
I wish I had the will and desire to be great in my twenties that I have now. Good luck to the young fella hope he finds it in himself at Texas. If he didn’t have it here at Clemson my guess is he doesn’t have it at all. Looking at how his sophomore year ended my guess is the latter.

These were my very first thoughts. Very well said. Don't think I could add anything else since you summed it up perfectly.

Well said TigerChrisL. As Dabo said once: let the light within you shine brighter than the light on you. He was in a position to succeed and excel, but didn't. True greatness emanates from within and that's where he needs to focus.

This is exactly right. Every kid I’ve ever known that had to be pushed through school or sports, etc. rolled back down the hill when the pushing stopped. The drive to improve and play your best has to come from within. That is what champions are made of.

1000% true. In the 24/7 article, Mukuba was quoted in one paragraph saying that he wasn't getting better, didn't play much last year and the coaches failed him and the team wasn't where it needed to be. The first sentence in the very next paragraph says "Clemson finished last season with one of the best pass defenses in the nation..." Glad we are rid of this clown. What a weak link in the chain. He also said he saw Sarkisian as a "father figure" . I guess Sarkisian's 2nd divorce cemented it for Mukuba.

Just for clarity, the reason he didn't play as much last year is injury.

UT transfer portal, it’s all about The Dollars, $$$, The Dollars $$$$$. Losing playing time at Clemson, and a fresh start $$$$$ at Texas.
Maybe it will help his NFL stock, instead of being a backup at Clemson.
Good luck in your future…..

Yep, but he didn't have the heart to say what his real reason was for transferring. So he made it out to that it wasn't enough talent at Clemson to push him. Conclusion, that's what a real piece of _ _ _ _ says before choosing to be completely honest about underclassman was about to pass him and he didn't want NFL scouts seeing or knowing that. Young man those NFL scouts have seen a tone of players being passed by underclassmen, and they see it before talent like yours even realize it's about to happen!!!

After that long it starts to fall on the player. He should know that he's allowed to push himself to go along with the competition. That's a sry excuse. You either have the drive to keep getting better or you don't, or you just peaked already and thats all you really have.

This is a prime example of the lack of player leadership these past several seasons, and part of the issue with us not performing up to our potential and closing out games as much as we'd become accustomed to. Seems like a hungrier, more determined, and more confident mentality has been setting in since the '23 class arrived.

I mean why not throw Mom and Dad under the bus for not telling him to go play at Texas to begin with so Clemson would not have been beaten so much the last few years. Yes he is responsible, at least partially, for all losses but mostly Tennessee where he could not cover a slug...true story LOL

He seems like a follower who wants to make people around him happy. In this case, saying what he knew would likely get some good press in favor of Texas.
I wish he had just taken the high-road and said, "due to the injuries I had, my time at Clemson didn't go as I expected"! Or something like that. "I was homeskick and wanted to return to Texas", nothing wrong with that.
I thought he was better than these comments.

Yep!
He had that elbow/shoulder thing going on - which is what he pointed to for his lack of production his 2nd year! And, it makes sense, because often you have to trust your body again to work how it always have up to that point when your playing football or whatever sport/activity.
But, he should have just left it at that. Wish him some maturity and growth.

like a lot of other posters, it was for something other than what he said. Being closer to home, probably had a lot to do with it, but the dollar, and I believe tampering, had something to do with it also. I wish these kids would just start being honest and admit, it's all about the money. At least I could respect them for being honest.I believe Mike Reid is an excellent DB coach, and to lay it on him and the staff, is really bad form

Very disappointing comments but not the first to leave because they saw the handwriting on the wall about future playing time and he won't be the last. Bottom line is we will be fine without him with an attitude like that. Good luck and goodbye - who knows we might see you on the field......

Tigers have been trending downward the past couple of seasons and Texas has suddenly trended upward last year. Couple that with joining the SEC, and the money he got from NIL, and Voila. Now we have lost what I think is the 1st starter to the transfer portal. I think we will have the best season in 4 years this year. The question is how good will it be?

Well, somehow the position group is being pushed pretty #### good looking at NFL placement.
Clemson has 7 secondary players in the NFL. That's counter-indicative of poor player development.
His comments don't add up. He should've come up with a better narrative to defend.

Well, since UT is down to their third-string tailback (due to injuries), and the season has not even started, Makuba may find himself playing for a mediocre team. The grass is not always greener. . . .

Not true. Our starter got hurt and the other injury was a true freshman running 5th. We got either the #1 or 2 RB in this last class. We’ll be fine, but thanks for your concern.

Needing to be pushed means you have desire, no self starting ability and no personal goal to reach your full potential and no self motivation. Sure hope he makes it to the NFL and stays a long time otherwise he will not make a good employee in the every day work world.

Exactly, being a self starter well keep you employed as much as anything else you can do for your employer bc no matter how hard you can work if you know what to do, an employer hates seeing someone standing around bc he hasn't been told what to do next...

As a manager(coach), I teach you the job. I teach you the basics of how to perform, when, where, etc. I'll show you some tricks and techniques for success. And I teach you THE PLAN. As you perform your job(game), I give you updates, performance reviews and guidance on how to become better. At some point, as an adult, you realize it's your responsibility to perform. If you want to get paid more, you learn as much as you can, where you can and you put it into practice. It's your responsibility.......... So your first year was great. You tore up the field. You were the man. What happened??? How is it you stopped being the man. Injuries I get. Cant do much to control that. Could it possibly be that all those accolades went to your head and you stopped pushing??? MAYBE, the opposing coaches started figuring you out. Maybe, the competition got better, and YOU didn't adjust. All comes back to that responsibility thing. As a manager(coach), when someone came to me and send they were having issues and were thinking about leaving, I could usually tell if they were "already gone" or just needed to talk. You were already gone. The coaches could probably see it. Do you honestly believe that the coaches wouldn't have pushed, paid the nil, done what was necessary, if they believe/ needed to keep you. Sometimes, ya got to let people sink on their own, for them to understand and to keep from pulling everyone else down. Hope you do well, Mukuba. Hope the future is bright, but sometimes you get blinded by your own glory.
Go TIGERS!!! BEAT DEM DAWGS!!!! AND THE COWS, IF THEY COME CALLING

NFL scouts will love those comments. The kid just said he can’t be a professional and motivate himself. He should have just said he wanted to move back home where is kid is. He would have served himself better if he would have just said he left for the money. He just self selected to be taken off the board of half the NFL teams.

Or the SeC or the Pros . Really smallish player who tried to play physical but came out looking foolish more times than not. Was hoping Makuba was a Ryan Carter type player but he wasn’t .

I agree.
Makuba had a good build for a CB, but not for a safety.

Have fun getting torched in the SEC

It would have been real easy for him to just say that he transferred back to Texas to be closer to his kid, but instead he took the low road.
I didn't fault him too much for deciding to chase the NIL bag when it became apparent he wasn't going to be a high draft pick and might not even keep his starting job at Clemson. And then you throw in the fact that he has a kid in Texas and it makes even more sense.
But to say he wasn't being pushed enough at Clemson is laughable. This dude got burned on big plays more than any Clemson DB in recent memory and was clearly getting on the verge of losing his starting job when guys around him like Mickens and Barnes were playing better than him. I imagine Kylon Griffin and Tyler Venables coming back would have been getting snaps as well. Yes he looked like a baller his freshman year but then he never seemed to grow or develop from there and then we asked him to do more and take on a bigger role on the defense and he would just continually get toasted by speedy receivers (the Orange Bowl was particularly bad).
I was gonna be rooting for him to do well at Texas, but not after this. Hope you get absolutely lit up in the SEC and that our receivers get to be the ones to do it in a CFP game!

I agree with your theory that maybe he saw the writing on the wall, and needed to bag something quick since his NFL potential was dropping. With NIL in play, and so few players making the show, that certainly is on the mind's of these young people.
Of course, he can't say that publicly, but he also didn't have to throw our staff under the bus. Heck, best thing for him probably was to get a degree and then say "hey, I'm just interested in trying a different system closer to home".

And yet you were still playing. I admired your toughness, man, but c’mon. Coaches are only gonna push you so hard when you’re dealing with a significant injury.
And new talent is gonna come in year after year. You have to COMPETE to get that playing time. That’s just part of the game. You still had an important role with this team. Sucks but that’s how college football works nowadays.

Money had nothing to do with this. We just lost the top WR in the country to Oregon because they paid more and we are about to lose the top OT to OU because we don’t want to spend the money. We finished a close second for him when he went to Clemson and he’s a hometown boy. It’s all about that. He’s an Austin boy and people love Austin.
