Is Tom Allen wearing black or navy?

Clemson coaches wore navy before 1992. Maybe, it's a throwback. Or maybe he likes black. Navy is Clemson's Mandela Effect. People swear it didn't exist, but navy and orange were our colors before that.

before becoming orange and purple in 1896.

Walter Riggs brought orange and navy with him from Auburn, but the navy blue fading led to the adoption of purple. The purple is now designated as "Regalia".

While navy was used years ago, it hasn't been an official school color since 1896.

The Regalia story was propaganda by the University in the late 90's to rebrand. Everything Clemson before the early 90's was orange and navy. Everything. Purple did not exist.

Hey don't use big words like, "regalia" because there's Marines on this board. We'd like to know what words mean. Afterall, we do have the IQ of Crayola.

Saw very little purple in athletic uniforms during the 80's. Lots of navy though. Baseball team wore navy and orange hats not purple. Danny Ford always wore a navy pullover jacket on the sidelines. Basketball uniforms had navy trim not purple.

I love the purple but don't remember it coming around until the 90's under Hatfiled.

Brought purple back. It was a historical color, but switched to Navy in like the 70’s and 80’s. Purple came back in the 90’s and has rightfully been there since with Bowden solidifying it.

There are plenty of Orange and Navy teams, but few Orange and Purple; and I like it that way. Makes Clemson more unique.

The navy blue faded into purple a century plus ago. I asked Tim Bourret about this years ago and he told me that for about 25 years, until Nike came on board with CTB, Russell Athletic and other uniform vendors used had a hard time matching NW Purple, so the Athletic Dept. went with navy blue. Nike was able to match the correct purple so the ship was righted. Why fans want navy is beyond me because about 25 other schools use it. Exactly TWO schools use O and P, and that is us and Evanston University. It is another unique thing about Clemson, which makes it good by me and many others.

tnet-military.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is a massive conspiracy. Clemson's colors were orange and navy. JFK level.

The fact that folks are doubting this makes it even more fun. My grandfather played for Clemson in the 50's and there was no purple or "Regalia". Regalia was made up by a marketing campaign in the 90's. We wore orange, white, and navy trim. Back then, it was mostly navy. Then, for some odd reason against NC State in 1992 Hatfield broke out purple unis. Never before that. Then it disappeared until Bowden. We always wore navy. It's all a lie.

Correct, they did. However,

The school colors were even back then NW Purple and Burnt Orange. They used navy on athletic unis because it was easier to get. NW purple is a dark purple. Uniform vendors struggled matching it. Nike came along and fixed it. My Uncle's Clemson diploma from 1959 has purple and orange trim. I'm glad we don't look like Auburn, Syracuse, and many others.

NW purple and burnt orange are the descriptions of our colors I’ve seen since I was little. And I’m old. The colors “evolved “ to orange and navy blue during Ford days. Was orange and white for a short period before Ford. Look at my avatar and see a pennant of yellow and purple. The pennant is at least a hundred years old

Nike, evidently, had Clemson Textile Chemist on board to color match to the Regalia formula. The NC State Wuffies couldn’t do it.

I don’t know if it was the purple itself or simply because fans didn’t like Hatfield, but it wasn’t popular at first.

Until then, it was lots of navy blue. Danny Ford wore a navy blue jacket. Football uniform trim was navy blue. Our basketball road uniforms were sometimes navy blue. It was really weird for a school that didn’t have navy blue as an official school color.

I’m glad we are back to purple, although I do think the navy blue looks better with orange.

When I was a student in the 80’s I always thought the colors were orange and white and navy. The chant at the stadium was orange/white. I didn’t know purple was an official color until years later. I tend to believe the account given earlier attributed to Tim Bourret. Navy was probably a lot easier to get than this particular shade of purple in the 1970s and 80s. I like the Regalia and orange combination.

The book "Death Valley" by Johnny Martin was published in 1968. On page 25 under the General Information section, the colors are listed as Burnt Orange and Northwest Purple. The book also includes a very nice Foreword by Paul Bryant.

Until the 90’s and early 2000’s. They were primarily standardized because of merchandise sales. Nike and adidas were the leaders here. We’re so accustomed to being able to purchase most anything we want with a Tiger paw on it now but this wasn’t the case 30-40 years ago.

As a freshman at Clemson in the fall of 2000, the accent color was navy. Bowden changed this to purple on the football uniforms for the 2001 season. I vaguely remember a question about it in an interview and he responded with something along the lines of orange and purple being our true colors and that there were enough orange and navy schools out there (AU, Syracuse, UVA to name a few). IIRC basketball followed suit a few seasons later. Nike became the supplier for football uniforms and gear in the late 90’s but didn’t become the supplier for all sports until several years later, which is when the colors started to be standardized across all sports.

Even so, there are sports within schools that use other accent colors not used across their respective athletic departments. For example, the UT Lady Vols basketball team utilizes a light blue color and I believe that school in the Midlands utilizes some yellow for the ladies basketball team.
