Ove Johansson of Abilene Christian University kicked a 69 yard FG vs East Texas State. Still the all-time record, college or pro. There is some grainy 16mm video footage of it in the link...
Even more bizarre, about 10 minutes before that historic kick and 270 miles up the road in College Station... Tony Franklin of Texas A&M had connected on a 65 yard and a 64 yard FG. In the same game.
Probably the shortest time anyone has held the all-time world record in anything...

“Everything is bigger in Texas”,haven’t you heard ?
I drive that state a lot, they regularly get very big and sustained winds, usually blowing up from the southwest. I haven’t looked at any archived weather reports but I would suspect October 16, 1976 to have been one of those kind of days.

And a Tee Helps a Great Deal! College did not start kicking off the Ground until the Decade of the 1990’s.

There were very strong winds that weekend and all across the south and Midwest, a number of schools broke records.

I get what you’re saying, but that happens often in the Olympics between heats.

The old SWC kickers were using older heavily inflated balls back in the 70s I think I remember reading in Sports Illustrated. None of them could replicate their leg strength in the NFL where they had to use “The Duke”.

And almost a year later to the day, Russel Erxleben of Texas kicked a 67 yarder.......with a straight on kick, not a soccer style kick. Air must be thinner in Texas?? Not......but the wind sure does blow!

63 yarder for the Saints is still the greatest kick ever, a straight-on kick by a guy with a half a foot. I saw that kick live on TV. Others say he had an advantage with the special shoe he wore...
I don't know. They're all amazing kicks.

Using a tee to kick it. Not allowed for a long time now.
