Anybody else paranoid of storms after Helene?

I had 3 really big trees hit the house - thankfully, no major damage, but thought one had taken the back deck off. It actually shifted my house such that some doors became harder to open and close. That was the 2nd time I'd had multiple trees hit the house. Both times were early morning. It always seems to be early morning!! Both times were back on the corner where the Master Bedroom is.

I used to enjoy watching the storms blow through and the trees swaying with the wind. No more. Now all I see is giant blades waiting to slice through my house. We had several in the neighborhood that actually had that happen - repair work hasn't even started on them yet, it was so bad. I have a hard time sleeping soundly when these overnight storms blow through.

Had both cars totaled by hail damage a few years ago, too, from a March storm. Have had 2 new roofs in 10 years due to hail damage.

I guess there's always something somewhere to worry about, but I am very much over the windy thunderstorms and hail!

I'm right there with you. Had two large trees fall in the back yard. There is one (the biggest) still left standing right next to my house that would do the most damage if it were to fall the right way.

Any time there has been some rain followed by heavy winds I get a pit in my stomach. I know Helene was probably a once in a lifetime event for this area but the winds definitely bring up some nerves.

When you are young, you plant trees around your house. When you are older, you cut down all the trees you planted around your house. I’m not in the cut down phase yet, but I know it’s coming.

Now, by "God" do you mean Brownell? Or, you know, Jehovah? ;)

Just kidding..... had to go there!

I believe God will protect us. He did during Helene - no major structural damage, but very scary. Kinda like driving through a nasty storm on the interstate when you had previously had a nearly catastrophic wreck before and traffic is thick.

We had 2 large (93 foot) red oak trees fall and just barely brush the side of the house during Helene. I saw them fall and, by the noise they made, I thought they had done more damage than the scratches and small chips to the siding that we had. There were several other trees that fell on the edge of the yard that weren’t close to the house. I’d be lying if I said I’m not more concerned now than I was before but I’m not what I would consider paranoid. That storm was extremely unusual for this part of the country and, short of a tornado, I would not expect to see the other large trees near the house come down. We were in South Florida for Andrew in 1992 and lived on St. Thomas during a very bad hurricane there in 1995 so we have seen 2 other very damaging hurricanes but I think the thing about Helene was that it was moving so fast it did not lose strength like most do by the time they got this far inland so it caused much more damage in this area than we had ever seen with a hurricane. So now I just pray for the best outcome and look forward to the storm being over. Take care and good luck!

When the first one from my neighbors lot hit my yard in the dark, I couldn’t tell where it was but spent the rest of the night away from that end of the house- no bed for me after that sound !

I am a bit.

I live in Hickory, NC. Parts of the upstate got it worse than us, but I did have three large trees go down, a white oak and two hickories. They were in the 120 - 150 ft range. Thankfully, none damaged my house. Unfortunately, I was traveling for work during the storm, so my wife was all alone in the house watching these massive trees fall all around her. She was absolutely shell-shocked when I got home and PISSED at me, my company, the phone company, the internet company, etc. You name it, she was mad at it. Of course, by the evening she had processed everything and in a better head space. The whole ordeal cost me a sore back and about $6k, but obviously it was so much worse for so many people. I have had the chance to do some (a little) relief work in Old Fort, and man, it is crazy to think that Helene is just a memory for me while folks just one hour west of me are still living in temporary housing and have zero money to rebuild.

Kind of an aside... I'm not convinced that "God protected" me and my stuff. I think he created a universe with some randomness in it. Granted, it may only appear random to us because we cannot ascribe cause, but I don't think so. Sometimes bad #### just happens to people for no reason and sometimes bad #### doesn't happen to people for no reason. As Jesus said, it rains on both the righteous and unrighteous. I suppose the sun also shines on both, and I don't know why. Not sure that really matters, but man, if I had no money, no insurance and a pile of giant trees laying where my house used to be, I might get pissed at God if I heard he protected someone who has insurance and a house. Of course, I did begin my fourth sentence with "thankfully". Thankful to who, God? For protecting me and my stuff? I dunno, something to think about.

This is that time of year. Winter is trying to fight back spring with these cold fronts colliding with warm air. We have been lucky though here in the upstate when they come through early in the morning rather later in the day when they have more fuel from daytime heating.
