Book Thread - Good Reads - Recommendations.

Need some recommendations for some good reads.
Naturally military reads are great as are fantasy (already read the Game of Thrones books.)
But any and all genres are welcome.
Thanks for the tips! Let's hear 'em!

Steven King: great stories, crappy writing style.
He should have simply been a screenwriter, IMO.

The Outlaw Chronicles by Angus Donald. Great writer!! The series loosly follows Robin Hood.(who starts as an outlaw because of his support for King Richard, but that is where the typical Robin Hood fable ends) But it actually follows Alan Dale and his rise and relationship with Robert Loxley and the King of England. He starts as a lowly cutpurse thief and fatefully rises to a knightd noble. Great, great series!! The 4th book(Warlord) is worth getting for the cover art alone.

recent "Vikings" tv series, then you will love these. Well written, with great characters and graphic, detailed battle scenes as well as a great look at life in those days. Good historical fiction written around real events and characters.

Vince Flynn ~~~ Clive Cussler
Jun 3, 2013, 9:09 PM
|
|
Flynn is based on American 'super-spy' Mitch Rapp who is ex-Seal & works dark off the books for USA. (Read series in order though.)
Cussler is based on Dirk Pitt & his adventures that amazing ties together a treasure hunter type story that links historical events over several centuries.
Also, David Baldacci, Jeffery Deaver, James Grippando, Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child, Michael Palmer, Stephen James, Jeffrey Archer, William Bernhardt, Michael Connelley

Frozen In Time is an amazing WW II read about a C 53 Cargo plain that crashes on the Greenland ice cap. Then a B 17 crashes while searching for the C 53 and then a Duck Plane crashes looking for the B 17. Incredible story of survival and loss.

FROZEN IN TIME (2013) by Mitchell Zuckoff.

He also wrote LOST IN SHANGRI-LA in 2011, which I would also recommend. Both are narrative nonfiction accounts of actual rescue missions for American soldiers during during WWII. You'll never believe that everything in these books actually happened.

I don't usually read nonfiction, but The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor by Jake Tapper was an interesting read. It details from the reason the US military decided to put a Combat Outpost in Kamdesh through the time we left. It shares the battles fought there and the counter insurgency that was going on. This is where Daniel Rodriguez was, and he is mentioned some during descriptions of the final battle there. His being there is what got me interested in the book. I was upset that we put an outpost in such a defenseless position and other things that happened there but also amazed at the bravery of our troops there.
I'm currently re-reading The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum and agree with a previous poster about his books being good. I don't normally read books again, but the Bourne ones were some of my favorites from 20+ years ago.
Daniel Silva is one of my favorite authors. He's written several books following a Mossad agent named Gabrial Allon, and I'm waiting for the new on in the series to come out in July. The first book in the series is the Kill Artist. His first book is called the Unlikely Spy which is a standalone fiction tale about the Allied deception to confuse the Nazis where we would attack on D-Day.

Nonfiction
Lone Survivor - Marcus Luttrell
Unbroken - Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit by her is also good)
John Adams - David McCullough
Devil in the White City - Erik Larson
Historical Fiction
Fall of Giants - Ken Follett (World War I) Winter of the World - Ken Follett (World War II)
Fiction
Game of Thrones would be my highest recommendation but you've already read the series.
