NGL that's my biggest drawback. I hate the highway there. Non-stop jammed.

I have heard that Chattanooga is super expensive now. Like downtown Charleston expensive for rentals. Any truth to that?

did a project at McGhee-Tyson Airport, actually lived in Maryville, just south of Knoxville.
Mountains obviously great. Knoxville I found OK, much like Columbia with the huge inner-city university. A bit dirty in parts, nicer in the west suburbs. Good bands came through (but WAY down from Nashville as you would know), good bars and nightlife (I was 25 not 55). Some good golf courses. Not too bad a drive over the mountains to Clemson games.
Wasn't there really long enough to have a total opinion. I would say overall above average.
Nashville much better, course I spent 10 years there. Chattanooga (spent a year there too) was great, I'd rate it above Knoxville. Many cool things to do in that area. Biggest neg with Chatt was the freaking time change deal because it's right on the EST/CST line.

We'll be there May 10th to see Ray Wylie Hubbard with aerozeptallica and SharkGirl, as a matter of fact. Don't think it was there when you lived in Maryville, but it's one of my favorite music venues and they book exceptionally well. It's actually part of the Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson dealership. Always a fair number of patched motorcycle enthusiasts at those shows, but the crowds are always well-behaved for the most part.

Former colleague and friend worked there after getting his second PhD. He's now at the Savannah river site. He said OR was unlike any site he'd ever done research on cleanup before.

Housing is really reasonable, I can find a place on the water or with gorgeous mtn views, I love outdoor sports like mountain biking and whitewater kayaking, which arent exactly abundant in middle TN, I’d be stupid to move out of TN and start paying sales taxes again, I think living in/near a college town helps keep you young, and yeah, 3 hrs to all my SC kin is a lot better than 6.
The city is picking up a lot of national interest. I’ve already done the “get in early on a rising city” move in Charlotte in the 90’s and now Nashville, and come out smelling like a rose both times. I’m telling you, in a decade people will be kicking themselves over what Knoxville housing was going for at this moment.

Concord/Farragut areas are amazing as long as you don’t have to commute into downtown. Oak Ridge is the same, but no lake.
The whole area around “Turkey Creek” is good. Used to do a lot of running around that area. It’s urban sprawl, but super nice.
That’s all I got.
