NCAA tournament here we come!!! Still look forward to a new staff. Brad always seems to do just enough to somehow keep his job. That is a pretty low bar to set.

a baby has to take small steps before it can run.we shouldn't be greedy.
12-year-old kids are NOT babies and don't take baby steps. Some 12 y.o. kids can walk and chew gum. Why does BB have a disappointing team (that must take baby steps) every year?

and Clemson is only .500 fully supports the position that CBB and his staff aren't capable of leading the program out of mediocrity.
At the end of the day, just three NCAAT appearances in twelve years (one of which was with another coaches players) is totally, completely, and entirely unacceptable by any and every measure or standard.

Brownell won one game he should have lost - to

last place Georgia Tech at home. What about all the games he should have won and lost? For the sake of brevity, I will only name this season's games (there is not enough time or space to name all of them):
Two games at the Charleston tournament, at Miami, Georgia Tech, and FSU, home against BC (my personal favorite) and UNC. If Clemson had won 4 of those games, we would be in consideration for the NCAA tournament with a win against Va. Tech on Saturday and one win in the ACC tourney and a lock for the NIT if not. Instead, Clemson has a very, very slim and unlikely chance of an NIT bid.
Keep Brownell if you love mediocrity. Why not TRY for better results?

I think you're kidding but this really is a fish or cut bait season. The contract was restructured to give him the all-important 4 years for recruiting. He'll go into the 2022-23 season with only 3 more years left on his contract. The conventional logic for many years has been you can't ask a coach to go out and recruit kids if they can't promise those kids that the coach will be there for all 4 years (I don't agree with this logic, but it has been the standard in football and basketball for a long time). Brownell would not still have a job without this logic. He has immediately disappointed after every extension. Giving Brownell an extension, even one year, after this season would be a terrible first more for this new AD. So, he either calls bs on the very logic that has enabled Brownell's tenure and lets him coach with less than 4 years remaining or has to let him go. Is this young AD willing to buck the prevailing belief of most in his position? If he does and next year is equally bad or worse, he's going to shoulder a chunk of the blame. If he makes a coaching change it will be several years before anyone looks to criticize him for it (unless the coaching search is a disaster).

Great point!
If Neff keeps Brad, but does not give an extension, Brad only has three years to get the next cycle of recruits to commit. He might as well look for another job. I wouldn't be surprised if Brad takes the Evansville job that opened up. He is from there and his parents still live there.

If the University doesn't change it approach to hiring basketball coaches, it's going to be just another "wash, rinse, repeat" scenario and we'll be having this exact same discussion in a few more years.

I'm talking more about the schools hiring pattern...

of establishing a salary range and then trying to find someone willing to take the job for the money Clemson is willing to pay as opposed to identifying the best person available and being willing to pay whatever it takes to get them.
This has been the pattern with every wimminz hoops coach since Jim Davis was let go, every volleyball coach since Jolene Hoover resigned, and it was also the case with Larry Shyatt, Rick Barnes, Oliver Purnell, Brad Brownell, Monte Lee, Mike Noonan, and Dabo.
Sometimes they get lucky which was the case with Dabo and Mike Noonan.

Completely agree - but what Dabo and Mike demonstrate is that in today’s sports economy if the coach is successful the school will do what it takes to keep that coach. We can’t get there in basketball until we start spinning the wheel. Monte Lee and Brad Brownell have both already been given more latitude than coaches of similar accomplishments would at comparable programs. Chad Holbrook was the anointed one at South Carolina and made two Super Regionals and was fired after 5 seasons. Monte Lee has made no super regionals and just coached the worst season of Clemson baseball in most of our lifetimes and is limping into year 7. The Brad Brownell saga is almost comical at this point. That any one would argue that he should come back for a 13th season so he can maybe do just good enough to get yet another extension and tie us to another 3-4 of his well demonstrated mediocrity is astounding. There is no coach in his 12 season at a P5 school with as few accomplishments as BB. It’s not even close.
Final note, Noonan was a great hire. Dabo was pure dumb luck.

3 games doesn't override a coaches performance or outlook for the future after 12 years of inconsistent basketball.

I've noticed through the years that our team really just quits about January. It might be lack of conditioning, or maybe just a mental letdown, but often we roar though the early season and peak right after New Years, about when the ACC schedule begins.

If history is our guide, next year will be a good year. Check out the track record after a down year during his tenure: 12-13: 13-18 (5-13 in conference) 13-14: NIT Semifinal (10-8 in conference) 16-17: 6-12 in conference 17-18: Sweet 16 (11-7 in conference) 19-20: 9-11 in conference 20-21: NCAA 1st Rd (10-6) 21-22: 8-12 is best possible finish in conference 22-23: ??
I like what they have arriving at point guard (some size for once). Hall is the foundation. Middlebrooks and Schieffelin are showing growth and expect they will continue to contribute more. Hit the transfer portal as needed to improve. Beadle is the unknown right now.
So I guess I’m of the thinking to hold for another season vs. tearing down what’s under construction for next year.

Don’t really understand the 4 year deal. I do but I don’t in a way. Give a guy that’s average 4 years and it’s 50/50 on a buyout in hoping something changes. Seems like a loss for the admin unless you just make the buyout stupid low and then he probably wouldn’t sign anyways. Not sure if a guy that comes and plays for Brownell would care a whole lot on us keeping him. Figure we would just be his best offer.
