Yet Mafah seemed to have very little issue running behind them all season.
The problem is that we barely gave him any opportunities, especially early in the season.
Going back and watching the film I think it's 50/50 between OL and Shipley's relatively poor vision running between the tackles.
Not bashing Ship - just saying Mafah seems to be a much better fit with our blocking schemes and personnel.

Until fourth quarter when Kentucky defensive line appeared to be gassed! Then our offensive line took over....

Even Phil had to fight many times to get TDs from the 3, 2 or 1. There's also the fumble vs Duke caused by our line getting pushed back and friendly fire knocking the ball loose.
Phil excelled despite these issues. That's a credit to Phil and not the line. Shipley is a good back WHEN there are holes to find and run through. They were few and far. Phil made the holes.
Pass pro was just abysmal.

I really think that kid could excel at WR but of course we need him in the RB room now.

OL not superb but functional. Speed on the outside would be my biggest concern. OL can’t hold their blocks but for so long and the receivers at times had trouble separating. On another note there are at times receivers open but Cade can’t find them or decides to throw late. Just a few issues I notice and I’m no football coach by any means.
Yes Mafah’s running style did work a lot better imo with the OL. I love Shipley but there was something off on occasion in not being able to hit the hole. Looked a little shifty back there at times. Someone may be able to elaborate on the differences a little better than I can. Vision?

Ship may seem "shifty" but he is really not. Since he arrived, he has been an "Impatient" runner who hit the hole full speed, often running up the backs of his blockers. Even when he breaks through a hole, he seems to immediately look for someone to run over. Only on occasion while at Clemson, did he break to daylight for a long play. Impatient runners have a knack for missing holes, not breaking to "green grass" and Ship falls into this category. He is a gamer. No question about that. We were lucky to have him for 3 years but he was never going to be the perfect back and the McCaffery Clone we were told he was.

watch how slow Brinningstool runs routes Beaux Collins gets lost how Tyler Brown just isn't tall enough for deep ball and screen pass didn't work because WRs to small and weak to block
then just watch Randall and JSapp shred DBs . but they get junk play reps where their numbers aren't called

We were one of the worst teams in the country for tackles allowed for loss, also were abysmal for sacks. Pass protection was awful. Run blocking wasn’t as bad, but still wasn’t great.

Consistent OL play is no where near....

where it should @ a school like CLEM. Even Dabo JUST SAID we had to improve there.
Injuries didn't help year, but that tends to bite ya when you carry less numbers in that room than your peers. Statistically, it gives you less margin for error (injuries, guys that don't pan out, transfers, etc....).
I do think situational playcalling is suspect at times and that can have a neg. effect. Would love to see % of how many times we ran the ball on 2nd down and long after 1st down play failed. Has to be >80%. Too many times we have second and short and we go with a low % pass play instead of feeding Mafah.
I do expect the OL room to improve though. Luke was a GREAT hire and you are going to see more emphasis on getting that room to mirror the DL room. ZERO reason why Clemson can't have an ELITE OL Room. NONE.

The OL has to pass block too, FYI.
Our weakest offensive play all year was “…and short”. 2nd and short, 3rd and short….awful. It’s why we were so bad in the red zone.

I heard Shipley averaged more yards per carry over the last 3 games.

Plus he’s 5th on the team in receptions.
For the season as a whole, Mafah has 14 more inches per carry.
These two are nearly the same in rushing and Shipley was a far better receiver.

The problem was not the run blocking but the protection on passing plays...success can with the running game.

Not trying to knock your thoughts but there are some stats that you seem to be overlooking. The one that jumps out most quickly for me is the number of sacks suffered. An o line that is working as it should would not allow 8 sacks in the final game of the season.

The obvious truth is just that - the OL looked just fine when Phil carried the

ball.
And QB backs up way too far, way too soon and also rolls out to the right almost every time. Thus, I blame a lot of sacks on him.

Bottom line is that our OL was subpar for the most art of the year! This must be a major improvement going into next year - that and the ability to be able to run up tempo for the better part of each game. And evolve into what Riley was noted for at TCU which was to attempt a 20+ yard pass down field every 4-6 plays called. We never got to that point in the progression of our offense to be able to do that!

We ranked 71 in sacks allowed, and often couldn't run the ball. We scored 0 tds vs Scar. The oline sucked. Stop making excuses
