Now, my criticism . . .of Dabo and the staff and the team

Dec 5, 2013, 12:39 PM

I have earned it.

I love the Tigers and I really like our coach. I really like the young men who are playing for us. We have come a long way from the TB years on many, many fronts.

We have even seen development this year on the Defensive front. If we can use our recruits from last year who were red-shirted and hurt we might have a good secondary as well as a front 7 who are nasty and dominant. That bodes well for the D.

Why is our O-line so behind everyone else's? I mean they can all block. I have watched them in 1 on 1 battles and they will carry the day . . .sometimes. Did we improve here all season? Will another year will Caldwell help us out? TB unlike Connor Shaw had no time to sit back and look for the best receivers. Picking up a 2nd and 2 is a major ordeal and more times than not it moves on to 3rd and 1 or 2.

Chad Morris has been countered in the FSU and USuC game not by his plan of attack but by our weakest link the O-line. And if any O-line players are reading this I will just say I want you guys to succeed so I am not attacking you personally but at the moment in all truth you guys are not getting it done consistently in the biggest games. You need to work harder in the weight room or on techniques.

To make the move to the next level you need that front 7 on D but you also need a line you can rely on.

That is all.

Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We won the battle with their d line... Hot Rod gashed their defense in the run game.
I will not try to sit here an tell you our o line is great but Tajh was not running for his life in this game. You are looking for a scapegoat. We need more consistency from the o line and we need to go up one more level in overall ability. Other than that, you are simply searching for answers to why we couldn't throw the ball to our team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am looking at the entire season not just the USuC game.

Dec 5, 2013, 12:47 PM

Something is not right on 2nd and 1 and you run for the first down and end up 3rd and 2. Seen it too many times this year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree

Dec 5, 2013, 12:52 PM

This is where I alluded to consistency. We could use a small upgrade in talent but it is not a major problem.

My take on things is that we played with our linemen so much this year hoping to find the "best 5" that they were not able to gel like a line needs to. That combined with a 1st year starter at center having to make all of the calls.
The issue you are speaking of on 2nd and 3rd and short was more not communicating well on blitzes than anything else. I would bet that if you go back and watch those plays, that you would see guys going unblocked more than a linemen being handled by the man in front of him. There were lots of times our guys didn't know how the guy beside him was going to react in a certain situation and they guessed wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, that would be good news if experience is the only

Dec 5, 2013, 12:53 PM

problem. It would mean we should have a better line in 2014.

Re: Well, that would be good news if experience is the only

Dec 5, 2013, 12:58 PM

I think it is more experience playing together than how many games each guy has played. We are going to have to transition better in replacing Thomas and Shatley next year and get everyone on the same page.
Our talent was better this season but the cohesiveness was worse.

Re: I am looking at the entire season not just the USuC game.

Dec 5, 2013, 1:04 PM [ in reply to I am looking at the entire season not just the USuC game. ]

I think it is the fact we run the pistol on short yardage plays. Think about it we have to shotgun snap the ball 3 to 4 yds deep and then the back is behind the QB and to his side so we sometimes have to run 4 to 6 yds to just get back to the lOS. I like our O but do think is has it drawbacks at times and this is one of them.

In the "I" formation

Dec 5, 2013, 3:02 PM

it is standard for a running back to line up 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage. If Tajh takes a pistol shotgun snap he is generally 4 yards off the ball. This would be closer to the line and not farther away.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with this. Tajh only found pressure when he went

Dec 5, 2013, 12:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Now, my criticism . . .of Dabo and the staff and the team ]

looking for it. Hot Rod could have run for 200 yards had we let him.

I agree about the OL. It annoys the heck to see us get 7 or 8 on first and then get stuffed on second or third down. Yeah I know the may change the dfense but we even struggled with this against Citadel. Really?

Our run block depends on the back selecting a gap and doing something in the second level. there is no consistencey to where they will have a shot at running. I also dont think we are good at sustaining blocks very well in the run.

Add to it the fact we recruit minimal OL numbers and usually have one of the better developing ones have to give up football for some reason and it is very frustrating. Some teams develop an occasional scout team OL guy. we last did that with Tommy Sharpe. that was close to 10 years ago.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe losing Freeman had a bigger impact than expected

Dec 5, 2013, 1:25 PM

alot times he was refered to as the glue that kept the line together and was the unquestioned leader for his junior and senior year. Losing him defiantly had an effect on the oline chemistry

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

No, That's No It

Dec 5, 2013, 2:07 PM

We had the same issues when Freeman was playing. It's a question of talent and substandard S&C program. Mostly, talent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With that harange "Thomas"..I'm quitting the Oline & moving

over to the bench where I can drink more Gatorade! Bye.

Good post about the O line. I would add

Dec 5, 2013, 2:24 PM

that Tajh has been accused of looking "scared" when facing dominant defenses.

He is not scared.

Tajh takes on the responsibility of the offense. In his mind, it is on him.

He is standing there waiting for the snap, knowing the play that has been called, and knowing his line (HIS LINE) cannot keep the defense off of him long enough for his receivers to get separation down the field.

What you see in his eyes is the responsibility he accepts in the face of overwhelming odds.

Re: Good post about the O line. I would add

Dec 5, 2013, 2:42 PM

That's nonsense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup

Dec 5, 2013, 2:50 PM

Our O-Line blew huge holes in the gamecock front. Boyd had time to throw, but for whatever reason, he doesn't pull the trigger on time. Good QB's throw players open, or throw the ball where only their player can make a play. Boyd needs the player to be open in order to throw it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yup

Dec 5, 2013, 2:55 PM

I think he's more worried about making a great TD throw rather than having his receiver make a great catch. Something his receivers have been doing his entire career. He gets too caught up in things.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yup

Dec 5, 2013, 2:56 PM

and I'm not bashing him. He's a good guy and done great things.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same here

Dec 5, 2013, 3:02 PM

He has done great things for our program. He just can't turn it loose, for whatever reason, in a few of the biggest games on our schedule. I will be happy to not have to yell....throw it...throw it....throw it....what are you doing, don't run into the center....throw it....sigh.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had no problem with the O-Line

Dec 5, 2013, 2:38 PM

Boyd walks into sacks. One of his biggest weakness is pocket awareness and decision making. If the primary receiver isn't open it takes him forever to make the next read. The O-Liine was a strength this year. You have to remember that the other team has good players as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I had no problem with the O-Line

Dec 5, 2013, 2:47 PM

Exactly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you will see 'better' OLine play next year

Dec 5, 2013, 2:45 PM

It has nothing to do with 'next year' or 'better' OL play.
It will have more to do with, I hope, a QB and RB that fit the system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Now, my criticism . . .of Dabo and the staff and the team

Dec 5, 2013, 2:49 PM

You finally decide to complain about something and you choose the OL???

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A better O-Line? I've been saying that for years***

Dec 5, 2013, 2:58 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with 74 paws! Tajh Boyd

Dec 5, 2013, 3:04 PM

Was not a Morris guy, I think the system we have now on offense would be best fit for a Woody Dantzler type Qb. I think morris's offense is built for a qb who could take it to the house on any given play....( Manzel, Cam newton, Dantzler type of qb. Coming in Tajh was not a running qb, they tried to mold him into a qb that he wasn't. Tajh wasn't that fast in IMO but he could get short yrd tds and short yards. He wasn't a threat like Morris is looking for. I'm interested to see what watson brings to the table as far as explosive run plays as well as a power b

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't discount Kelly

Dec 5, 2013, 3:09 PM

I think the Stoudt and Kelly combo could be devastating next year. Make the other team prepare for a QB who picks you apart with his arm and a QB that can pick up big yards on the ground. I'm usually not a fan of the 2 QB system, but Kelly and Stoudt have different enough skill sets to make it work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't ask a kid to he something they ain't.

Dec 5, 2013, 3:19 PM

Weights, film, and technique will only get a guy so far. We need athletic players up front. Which is why I say it comes back to Dabo. Everyone loves a Sammy Watkins. What we need is 7-9 top OLineman.
