So much of our economy runs on this type of stuff.

This has absolutely zero impact on me, or responsible people. 3 decades and some change into this checking account thing, and I've never been hit with an overdraft fee. WHATEVER it is, I would deserve it. Heck, 2-3 overdrafts and they're fine to close my account. Give me back my money and tell me to bank elsewhere. At what point did overdrafting become normal, accepted, and a frequent thing?
Any Juan know the overdraft fees on $36,234,757,998,234.00? smh......

But even heavily anti-carceral, pro-Urban folks are getting louder and louder about the need for stricter enforcement of "social contract" laws (particularly over anti-social behavior on public transit) to keep our society from crumbling at the corners. This seems to fit within that notion. You have X money in your bank account. You can check your bank account instantly from your phone. If you take Y amount of money out, and you don't have overdraft tied to a savings account, you should have to pay Z, which is agreed upon in the contract you sign with the bank. Let's stop making carve-outs for people who are unable to meet minimum expectations of normal conduct.

zero sympathy for whatever you have to pay. It's like $30-$35? ###. You should be lucky it's that low. Freaking be responsible, or GTFO as far as I'm concerned. There's no excuse.
And here's the kicker, we make too much money on stupid people. A LARGE percentage of the American economy comes from people being stupid, and paying for it. If we normalize dumb/irresponsible behavior, then that's more money to be made. ####, make it $100 every time as far as I'm concerned. Maybe $200. Close the #### account after three strikes in 10 years or something.
When did people not only start being reprobates, but also expecting to be catered to in that regard? It's like my son. We are literally fighting with his high school. See, today those things called "due dates" for assignments, well, that's a mere suggestion. If you're late, just ask, and you can turn it in late. Get a bad grade? No sweat, you can retake any test. Just pisses me off.
You don't get second chances in life. You don't get flexible due dates.

I overdrafted my account a few times in college and I learned my lesson really quick to always check at the end of the month before using the debit card.

You took out money you don't have. If it's a problem, but it on a CC, get a month free of interest and pay it then.
Bring back debtors' prison.

So, a friend and I (both boomers) are going to start a bank. No frills, no flashing lights just a place to keep your money other than the mattress. Online banking and debit cards will only be available upon request. You can have direct deposit and automatic withdrawals for your bills. Otherwise, we'll issue you checks and a paper statement each month to balance your checkbook.
There will also be a savings account available where we will issue you a savings pass book to watch your savings grow. This will accompany our yearly Christmas Club account that can be withdrawn in December to spread your Christmas cheer.
No overdraft fees will be necessary. We simply will not let you spend money you do not have and you can work that out at the business where you wrote the check.
When you call our bank, there will be a full time human being to answer your call and either help you or direct you to another human being that can.
The name of our new bank is.....JITTERBANK!

prevent overdrafting from being even possible. It seems to me that's the solution to curbing the fees is make incurring them impossible.

Poor?
This was an actual conversation because I discovered I was too stupid to figure out what was going on with one of my cards. My friend related an incident where he got his account and the account he manages for his mother screwed up. Our original title was stupidfuckingboomer bank.
I'm not trying to prevent anything. There's no fixin stupid.
But the OP did remind me of a Dave Ramsey story. When his daughter bounced a check, he made her go to the bank and apologized to the bank manager for spending money she didn't have. She related that she never bounced another check after that. Maybe that's the cure.
Tech isn't there to prevent it because that's where the fees come from. Tech is there to let you know "we got you covered, and here's the price."

over drafting is really still a thing, but it must be. The fees for it are ridiculous though. Yes, individuals need to be responsible, but Imagine if you will a joint account. Person 1 stops and get something unexpected while person 2, who is better with the money but still not great, goes and does 3-4 errands that would have all been fine. Next thing you know this couple is $140 in the hole off a simple mistake.
That is a huge hit to households that are in danger of overdrawing an account. So, force the fees lower so the banks don't just sit back and count cash. After some time they will figure out a way to prevent the overdrafts on their end and merchants won't be stuck holding the bag. It is really very simple.
BUT...
then banks stop making as much money and stop paying the bottom of the org chart. These people get poorer and can't afford as much thus the merchants hurt and we have a recession.
Real solution, make being a billionaire a bit less appealing, reward corporations that give higher percentage raises to the bottom of the org chart, get these poor people to borrow more money in traditional ways, banks still get to make money.
